As a music student I spend a fair bit of time working in DAWs (see thread title, musicy software basically), partly for my uni work, partly for fun- was wondering if anyone else here used them much at all (hi Blake and Dan). I have Logic X but tend to use Ableton for most things, I hear good things about other DAWs but they're all I need really, I love the session view/ live aspect to it and the arrangement view is as good as any other, I like how easy it is to cut up clips, zoom in onto clips, drag and replace etc. Plus the plugins and packs are the best.

I was going to make this a really long opening paragraph but I don't want to ramble on about the benefits of automation for pages, I'm just hoping there's room for discussion around this topic for anyone else who makes music or wants to! I'm slowly getting more and more into the production side of things after favouring recording acoustically for a long time, and don't get me wrong I still like to do that and still play instruments a lot, but I'm starting to become fascinated by details I never really paid a huge amount of attention to before. The amount of work that goes into a short 10 second clip leading up to a drop for example is staggering- the layering, compression and automation among other things, soo that's what I'm focussing on at the moment. Also I'm developing an appreciation for weird glitchy things.

In news, Ableton Live 10 was released today (:o !) and for anyone who bought Live 9 moderately recently (as I have because it took me forever to upgrade from Live 8 x) there's a free upgrade to 10- I'm downloading it rn. As a Ableton user primarily I'm very excited to see new features, they tend to only release a brand new version (not including updates) every few years so I'm expecting the aesthetic to be updated (least important thing but it's pretty), some new core packs and maybe a few more built in functions.

So this is a space to talk about anything music production or recording related really, so news on software releases, any music tech you might have, external plug ins, favourite software. Whether you've done a lot of it, you're interested in starting (I can recommend a few good free programs) or just want to know a bit more about something plz post, would love to chat about it/ share ideas.

I have Logic, I'm not particularly great at it at the moment though as there's quite a bit to it, didn't do very well in my recording assignment (lower 2nd) but won't get into that. Not really looked at the others except for Pro Tools as one of my lecturers is quite keen on using that.

Would eventually like to get into making my own music but I haven't made the time, nor would my songs at this stage sound anything resembling a professional standard.

Never looked at Pro Tools myself, although I've heard good things. I tried a demo of Reason but most of my experience has been with Ableton, followed by Logic. Just spending time messing about with it can teach you as hell of a lot, I learnt loads about Ableton just recording audio covers a few years back and trying out mixing (though I'm nowhere near professional don't get me wrong x).

Aw, but they don't have to sound professional to sound good and they'll sound more professional if you practice. I know it's hard to find time but it's so fun (for me) once you get beyond an empty project and you've got the beginnings of a project, or even just a stupid lil 15 second loop. I just hate starting from scratch.
