These comments on Nitin's set were posted by Bulldog on Devoted and I just thought they should be here too. Isn't it wonderful when Will's voice changes people's opinion of him. Well it cheers me up anyway :D

Lee.

Why was Nitin Sawhney's set relegated to online only, this man is a master, a multi talented man who's love for what he does shines through his music, he is a joy to listen to, a shame he isn't afforded the same respect as others with less talent. Highlights were many but stand out for me was Nitin and Will Young ..two names i would never have expected to fit together as wonderfully as they did..'Home' was a masterpiece. perhaps the BBC will give such talented men the respect they deserve and show the set on their highlights show.

John

What an amazing set all those talented musicians in one room that's what i call bliss. This has to be shown on tv its too good not to be seen and heard by a wider audience, Will Young's performance of Home was spellbinding I never knew he could sing like that, Nitin was out of this world.

here a few more mentions..their fab. :cheer:

I was very lucky to have been in the freedm studio that night. Amazing to see so much talent & inspiration from all the musicians & singers. An incredible evening. Laura Izibor is one to watch for the future. 'Black is the colour' sung by Natacha Atlas was wonderful. Another stand out performance was 'Home' sung by Will Young. His vocals were so hauntinglty beautiful he made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up! Respect to everyone involved it was an incredible night. Especially loved the 'human beatbox' session at the end' i saw it but still didn't believe it! Nitin Sawhney is a genius, and this so deserves a bigger audience. Please please can this be shown on TV.

gerry

Nitin and his guests were amazing! Respect to Will Young, Natacha Atlas blew me away and I was really impressed with Irish soul singer Laura Izibor. I hope they air this on TV!

An absolutely gobsmacking evening! Almost impossible to describe other than to say it was an education and inspiration to see such a wealth of amazing talent on one stage. Performances by Reena Bhardwaj and Natacha Atlas left the crowd afraid even to breathe, such is the unworldly beauty of their voices. Fink was the epitome of Cool (with a capital 'C'), but then what else would you expect, coming from the legendary Ninja Tune stable! Will Young's "Home" was a magical moment, and Laura Izibor is without doubt a name to watch for the future. Special mention to Ashvin (sp?) on flute who has to be seen to be believed. Amazing. I felt privilged to have been there.... Thanks Mr. Sawhney for doing what you do best and brining a world of wonderul music to my ears. Too many highlights in one set to mention.... See you again next year (??) and at the Jazz Cafe shows for sure! INCREDIBLE.

Music OMH review by Michael Hubbard.

Quote:

As the focus for the Electric Proms, the Roundhouse was tonight packing in the crowds for the "Godfather of Soul", Mr James Brown. Downstairs and round a passageway, past some toilets, another gig would begin at the provocative hour of 10:30pm in the tiny FREEDOM Studio space, tonight an all seater venue devoid of chairs.

Nitin Sawhney, a man described by Will Young as someone not to call if you feel your under-achieving, had taken the chance of participating in the eProms to collect together an assortment of guest collaborators, familiar and new. They'd be joining him for a run through what was build as a "two hour downtempo event" comprising in the main of material from his seven albums.

From the off, to the sound of Sunrise, Sawhney's VJ's Yeastculture ambled around the stage, melding live images with recorded material and projected the morphed results behind a crammed-in band. From stage right Sawhney switched frequently between flamenco guitar and grand piano, introducing his guests as they shuffled on for their songs and off again, all succeeding admirably in negotiating wires, instruments and audience members.

Sparkliest by some margin was the always flamboyantly costumed Natacha Atlas, whose reflective eyelids demanded the audience's attention, while striking up-and-coming vocalist Reena Bhardwaj and long -time Sawhney cohort Tina Grace - a chanteuse who seems to meditate blissfully while singing - also took turns at the microphone, and Ninja Tune-signed Brighton songwriter Fink contributed guitar and vocals.

A backing band came fronted by Bollywood soundtrack stalwart Ashwin Srinivasan and a box of tricks - wooden flutes of every possible shape and size. When his soaring, evocative notes joined the mix his colourful instruments grabbed attention as much as the sounds they emitted. Behind him were arrayed a cellist, percussionists and turntablists, occasionally joined by R&B vocalist and pianist Laura Izibor, who was even given time to play one of her own pieces on Sawhney's grand.

So far so varied. But well before Will Young's faultless performance of Home, a track Sawhney wrote for the sometime Pop Idol' s third album Keep On,

audience members were beginning to suffer from numb bums and full bladders. With the venue packed and cameras filming from the main door, escaping was noeasy task, and there was to be no interval. What to do?

Sawhney, it seems, is far too serious an artist to allow for such frivolities as toilet breaks, necessitating a steady stream of embarassed scurrying for much of the back end of the set. (Your humble scribe did his best to shuffle past without treading on Guy Ritchie's fingers or falling into Chris Martin's hunched form, hiding under a grey hood that stayed up throughout. It's been one of the Electric Proms' notable successes that even musicians not taking part have bothered to show up and take in some of the shows.)

As with previous Sawhney setsI've seen, the end was nigh as The Conference's vocal jousting between Sawhney and his tabla/dholak player Aref Durvesh crackled to life. A palpable sense of theatre endured as the two men rose to an impossibly quickfire crescendo, rightly followed by a standing ovation from the audience. Yes it was late, and either a set in two halves or one shorter would have been preferable, but Sawhney's border-eradicating night of downtempo showmanship, especially in this tiny room, had proved to be something rather special.

Nice to know that Chris Martin and Guy Richie were there, I'm sure they enjoyed the whole set. :cheer:
