It's not the team that are cocky. It's all the people saying "It's coming home" after every England match even though there are stronger teams still left in the tournament. The people saying "We'll beat them easily", and it's the media in general.

You are... aware that 'it's coming home' is as much an ironic meme (albeit stretched to its limit as a humourous device by this point) as anything else, right? Maybe a large portion of deluded people across the country genuinely believe we have an easy ride to the final now but anyone who's looking at it a bit closer and keeping a clear head about that won't start really believing it until the semis.

If that's the case then fair enough but it doesn't appear to be ironic. It just sets England up for relentless banter if/when they get knocked out, it's a pattern of events that I've seen happen so many times in the past.

I would love to watch a penalty shootout with you

My teams always lose so I have heartache at the end x

So that's the penalty curse & the ITV curse lifted by England. Which means that their next match will be on BBC, and will lose on penalties.

Equally if we do get through Sweden to the SF, it will be on ITV and may well go to penalties again

I think if get to the semis then the Gentleman's TV agreement will go out the window and it'll be on both channels. Happened once before.

Usually the same for me too... it couldn't get much worse than the 2008 Champions League Final.

God I hope so. Can't stand ITV's coverage, particularly Glenn Hoddle: a candidate for most boring man in Britain.

To be fair the 'It's coming home' stuff is a bit of both irony and people believing the emotion. There are some great memes which take the piss out of it.. the Andy Murray one earlier was hilarious.

WHAT A RESULT. Absolutely shite game, two teams cancelled each other out, the only way goals were being scored in the game was through set pieces, which both were. Southgate's subs were horrible. Dier completely killed the rhythm and the midfield was at fault for setting the wheels in motion for allowing Colombia back in the game. Trippier should have done better.. awful to concede a goal then when you have your posts covered.

What a fantastic set of penalties from England though... I thought Henderson's was decent and was a really good save from Ospina. I didn't fancy him to score one though, he's nowhere near them for Liverpool usually and we're no gifted with excellent penalty takers. Don't know why Vardy didn't take one? Anyway onwards to Sweden whuch will be a difficult game, but while England lack creativity we are solid, hard to beat and good from set pieces.

My deep down feeling is that I'm still having to blink and pinch to check we're actually in the quarters. This is entering unfamiliar territory now. The last few tournaments, we've been eliminated well before where most people have our expectations set at. The banter quotient is much higher when you lose earlier compared to where you were expected to perform. Hereonout, it's all good.

It won't happen in this day and age, it's only happened once before in a very different TV climate.

And then from a business perspective, ITV would be gifting away their biggest potential ad revenue this century perhaps even of all time given inflation?! No business in their right mind would agree to that and I'd be gobsmacked if they did.

As a Man Utd fan I absolutely loved that penalty shoot out but when John Terry stepped up to take a penalty I was a nervous wreck!

I think the final is going to be shown on both BBC and ITV. I would be surprised if the same thing doesn't happen for England's semi final if they get there.

Apparently it's only a gentleman's agreement and not legally binding so there would be nothing to stop the semi being shown on both channels, despite what they've agreed before.

John Terry

One thing noticeable about the penalties tonight is that neither goalkeeper strayed far from his line - unlike the earlier soot-outs in this tournament. Is it too much to hope that FIFA have finally decided to have a crackdown?

I've a feeling the gentlemen's agreement dates from after Euro '96. Therefore, it hasn't yet been tested by England eating as far as a semi-final. I assume ITV will have first pick of the semi-finals. Therefore, they will not be happy if the BBC went ahead and showed both matches if England get that far. After all, the majority of the audience is almost bound to watch the BBC coverage (even if they inflict Mark Lawrenson on us) which would mean ITV potentially losing a lot of advertising revenue.

I thought that England, for the first hour, we’re very solid defensively (which is something I never thought I’d say) but then the wheels fell off in that last half an hour. :drama:

I literally only watched Dier’s penalty, all the rest I looked at looked at the floor!

I think people are being a bit too harsh on England’s performance; it was one of our better performances in the last few years and Colombia were incredibly dirty in their play. I think it’ll be a nice, even match between us and Sweden, close like it was this.

I had a bet on England to win 1-0 with Harry Kane to score a penalty in the second half so was absolutely devastated when we conceded in the 93rd minute!!!!

But England scraping past Sweden would be something ELSE. Sweden AAALWAAAYS destroys England and with EMBARRASSINGLY good goals, historic goals, too.

England needs to sort its head out and join with Wales and Scotland for Gareth Bates, etc. He is wasted in a Welsh team as it will never get to the same level as England. So, join it all together! Invite Ireland in too for a UK and Ireland team. It's the only way England will EVER win again.

I'm sorry but what???? Sweden have beaten England 3 times in the last 10 games, only 1 of which wasn't a friendly.

Actually just seen the last part of your post which screams troll, so yeah, whatever
