The start of a series of polls to celebrate Madonna's birthday week...

13 album opening songs. You pick out a Madonna album and these songs begin the journey. Those first few notes. The message. The mood it puts you in.

Which is your favourite? Is it also the song you think sets the tone for the album best?

It's not my favourite song on there (although I adore it) but I think Drowned World is a stunning opener! It's so atmospheric and it builds and builds it really sets the tone for the whole album which is incredible!

Also votes for Drowned World.

Such a difficult listvto choose from , some amazing tracks .

Survival is definately the weakest.

Agreed. There's some fantastic openers that kick things off with a bang, namely 'Like a Prayer' and 'Hung Up', but 'Drowned World' I think transports you to a state of mind in a way none of the others do. I remember reading a description of its intro which described it as a womb-like sound or words to that effect, which seems fitting given the subject matter. The intro has always given me thoughts and feelings of warmth, peace and safety and that description just summed it all up perfectly. It puts you in the right state of mind for the album and, for new listeners, it's a very different set up for a Madonna album so you are prepared to listen and be taken on a journey.

If I were voting for my favourite song it would be 'Hung Up' (and I also think it works superbly as an album opener, as many of the listed songs do), but I'm voting 'Drowned World' due to how unique it is.

Quite a few of them set the tone of the albums up very well. American Life for obvious reasons, Material Girl, Erotica, Girl Gone Wild. I'm not sure what to go for, maybe Papa or Hung Up as personal favourites...

This.

It really sets the tone for the album.

Doesn't hurt that it's perfect either.

Drowned World works best as an album opener in terms of how it sets the story of the album ahead.

Like A Prayer and Hung Up are strong runners up though.
