Chart Commentary

 

 

Claiming her first #1, Noah Cyrus shoots to the top with new single Live or Die, dethroning Why Don't We's 8 Letters after just one week. It's only her second top 10 hit, after All Falls Down with Alan Walker at the end of last year, and interestingly puts her further ahead of her sister Miley in terms of my personal chart. Miley's had four top 10 hits, with the highest being Malibu at #6. Both of Noah's have outpeaked that, with All Falls Down climbing to #5 over the course of its run. It looks less unusual when you consider that Live or Die is a collaboration with rapper Lil Xan, who has dominated my chart this year. He and Noah are the latest celebrity couple, with plenty of PDA when they walked the red carpet at the VMAs on Monday night. It's Lil Xan's second #1 hit after Moonlight (the new longest runner now that Cardi B's I Like It has dropped out), pushing him into joint second place for the rappers with the most #1s, tying with G-Eazy, Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign. What puts Lil Xan, aka Diego Leanos, ahead of the pack is that one of his two chart-toppers was as a lead artist, something only two others rappers have achieved in my chart's history (one being Iggy Azalea, who is miles ahead of the pack with seven #1s, and the other being Devlin).

When Electric Pineapple and Ryan Lawrie's collaboration Stay charted at #12 six weeks ago, I thought it was unlikely to get any higher and it seemed justified the following week when it tumbled a massive 25 places, then out after that. However, it re-entered the following week thanks to the music video and has been climbing ever since. Finally, it eclipses its #12 peak significantly and becomes a top 10 hit. Stay is the first hit for Electric Pineapple, a DJ, while Ryan scores his third top 10 hit, following huge #1 hit If Only (released before his X Factor audition but boosted to #1 when his audition aired) and #2 follow-up Perfect Picture.

Let Me Down Slowly led the way, becoming Alec's first #1 earlier this year, while The Boy in the Bubble didn't make my top 40 (and fourth release Death of a Hero came out Thursday 23rd so watch out for that next week). It becomes Alec's third top 10 hit, joining Let Me Down Slowly as well as 2017 #6 hit I Built a Friend (which originally charted the previous year as a Soundcloud demo but re-peaked following an official release).
