Who on earth considers those 'classic' films....? "Dirty Dancing" never really received rave reviews as such, and most of the others are really too recent to be considered as 'classic'

"Trainspotting" is a modern classic, methinks someone is talking a load of bollox....

An example of a totally over-rated film you say...? "Titanic"... Utter piffle....

28 days is great, but it's too early to call it a classic

it might be 10 years down the line though.

IMO, Clockwork Orange is extremely overrated. I think it's absolutely rubbish. Same goes for Exorcist. They were both banned and are surrounded in controversy which has just over hyped and over played two very average films and made people assume they are decent.

Also overrated, Shrek.

The Exorcist is a brilliant film.

Nah, Exorcist is an a borefest. There's only a few good moments.

Shows how much you actually know... "A Clockwork Orange" was NEVER banned, Stanley Kubrick withdrew it voluntarily because he started getting death threats, and it IS a cinematic classic, try reading the book sometime... "The Exorcist" was never banned from the cinemas, only from video... And, again, "The Exorcist" is a very good film, by far the most convincing and realistic portrayal of demonic possession ever filmed... Mainly because Friedkin filmed it in such a clinical, matter of fact way, absolutely playing it straight...

Blatty's book is also a damn good read...

Oh, another one for the 'over-rated' pile - "Blair Witch Project". Badly acted, poorly scripted rubbish which just rips off "Cannibal Holocaust".... Not in the least bit convincing... Every time that bloody woman started shrieking I just so wished the "Witch" would actually get her and shut her the hell up.... -_-

Actually I did know that, it created just the same hysteria as if it were banned by censors. I had to study Clockwork Orange in film studies and absolutely hated it. People are just up it's arse because it's considered a classic - no one dares to not like it.

If I thought it was sh!te, I'd say so, simple as.... I think you only really hate it because you dont really understand it... Read Burgess's book that will give you a greater understanding of the film.

Both The Exorcist and Clockwork Orange are masterpieces - I'm stunned there's people on here saying otherwise (probably the same people who'd think the Texas Chainsaw remake was better than the original    :D ).

Titanic is massively overrated - if you want to see a brilliant film about the sinking of the ship - look no further than the wonderful A Night To Remember - a stunning movie. Titanic is a horrible movie... with an even more gut-wrenching soundtrack :puke2: .

The XMen movies are a humdrum bunch in my eyes.... too much reliance on flashy effects, not enough story.

All the Bond movies after Moonraker stink.... and, after hearing the rotten new theme, I think the new movie will be another clunker.

While I'm not defending it or saying it'd any good, is Titanic overrated? Yeah, it made a lot of money and won a lot of Oscars, but I've not heard either members of the public or reviewers say many good things about it.

I think The Shawshank Redemption is overrated myself. Morgan Freeman is good in it, but it's overly sentimental, the basic idea that he would be able to escape in the way he did is more than a little far fetched, and it goes on far too long, especially considering the novel it was based on was so short.

Lost In Translation- complete and utter overrated rubbish imo -_-

Well it's just my opinion. I'd actually say Clockwork Orange is more over analysed than overrated. I'm sick of hearing how brilliant the "juxtoposition of Alex singing Singing in the Rain as he beats a man before he rapes his wife" blah blah... It ain't all that.

As for Exorcist, it's alright. Like GF said, it probably is the best depiction of demonic posession. It just seems to me there is a lot of waffle in between. I wouldn't want it cut down into some commercial Hollywood $h!te but at points I feel it drags on so much, it becomes like "Hello, here's my daughter Regan, she's posessed, what a dirty mouth she has."

I think Exorcist 3 is the best in the series though

As for the other films mentioned, X Men 1 is overrated but I think things really pick up in X Men 2. It's a shame Bryan Singer didn't complete the trilogy though as the third one was awful.

Lost In Translation was slightly overrated I think, but personally I really enjoyed it and wasn't let down by it when I saw it.

PS And as fr TCM, I've never seen the remake but the original is one of my all time faves ;)

Of course it is, it was the FIRST TIME something like that had been done in a film before to that extreme degree... Where do you think Tarantino got all his ideas from for that scene in "Reservoir Dogs".....? Not to mention the legions of other film-makers inflenced by this film and by Kubrick....

I suppose you reckon the 'shower scene' in "Psycho" is a 'bit over-rated' as well....
