Chart Commentary

 

 

Two months after he scored his maiden #1 single, Italian popstar Matteo Markus Bok scores a second chart-topper instantly this week with In the Middle. It's his third top 10 single, following #3 hit Just One Lie from the very end of 2017, and the aforementioned #1 hit El Ritmo (AHI AHI AHI), which rebounds one place to #38 this week.

 

In the Middle's success is quite remarkable when you consider the factors. The competition this week remains strong - last week's #1 from Dua Lipa and BLACKPINK held strong despite its slip to #2, and In the Middle was released on Tuesday too, missing half the week. Additionally, it's the first song to make my top 40, let alone #1, without a download on my iTunes. This may not sound so significant in 2018 when so many people use Spotify, but iTunes remains my primary source of music consumption. In the Middle is a Spotify exclusive as things stand, so that was my only way of listening to it this week!

Releasing her first single as a lead artist in over two years, Ellie Goulding makes a triumphant comeback this week with Close to Me. It debuts at #3, instantly becoming her joint-highest charting single, matching 2013's How Long Will I Love You. Becoming her tenth top 10 hit, Ellie continues to be one of the most notable artists in my chart that hasn't achieved a #1 single yet (though she has two #1 albums). Close to Me is produced by Diplo, who notches his third top 10 and highest peaking so far (outdoing his #4 hit Color Blind with Lil Xan), and also features a contribution from Swae Lee, who achieves his first top 10.

Zooming up a huge 30 places back into the top 10, Shawn Mendes sees a huge video impact for Lost in Japan. The song was a #6 hit upon release as a promotional single earlier this year, and has now been remixed by DJ Zedd, who earns himself a credit on the song. Although its previous #6 peak was inherited as a top 10 hit for Zedd anyway, he now genuinely scores his seventh top 10 hit, while Shawn's total stands at ten.

I'm not normally one for novelty tracks, and if I do get into them, it's normally short lived with a relatively low peak. For example, Lil Dicky's Freaky Friday made me laugh a fair amount earlier this year, but peaked no higher than #25 in my top 40. Therefore, this week's #5 is quite a rare species. Keep On Trying, You'll Do It! is a Doctor Who spoof song, created by a fanpage called "Doctor Who Poop" on YouTube (excuse the name lol :mellow:). The song parodies one scene from series 11's opener episode, The Woman Who Fell to Earth, which sees new companion Ryan Sinclair (Tosin Cole), who is dyspraxic, trying to ride a bike. His nan, Grace O'Brien (Sharon D Clarke), and her husband Graham (Bradley Walsh), are encouraging him. Although it's a touching scene, there are numerous funny moments (Bradley Walsh's thumbs up, the inadvertent rhyme of "Ryan Sinclair, don't you dare", among others) which come together in this song to make something that's not only funny, but extremely catchy too. Take a listen, I'll be amazed if you're not singing "you'll do it, if you keep on trying, and we'll go on trying" for the rest of the day...!

 

Elsewhere this week, we see a chart debut for Cameron Dallas and a new peak for Bradley Cooper.

 

 

It's a mega tour impact this week! The first comes from Why Don't We, who I saw live on Thursday 25th October. I met them before the show as part of the Limelight VIP package, and you can see the selfies + professional photo on my Instagram account here if you're interested. The show was great, an updated version of their previous tour in May with recent singles Hooked, Talk and 8 Letters included. Those three singles all see climbs this week - 8 Letters is up 14-11, Hooked 19-14 and Talk 30-21, while Trust Fund Baby re-enters at #28.

On Monday 29th October, I went to see Australian rising star Ruel, playing at Omeara. Although there was a fair bit of waiting around beforehand (the support act, Jaz Karis, who was excellent, was finished by 8:20 and Ruel didn't start til 9:15 :drama:) it was a great gig. He celebrated his 16th birthday that day too, so everyone sang happy birthday. He did free meet and greets after, although the photos still haven't been uploaded yet ffs :') His two hits in my chart both re-enter this week. #2 hit Younger is back at #29, while #4 hit Dazed & Confused is at #35. His debut EP Ready is back up to #3, having peaked at #1 over the summer.

Lastly, on Tuesday 30th October, I went to see 5 Seconds of Summer's Meet You There tour at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith. It's the second time I've seen them, after the Sounds Live Feels Live tour in 2016. It was a notably smaller venue this time - the last tour was at the O2 Arena - but it was still a great atmosphere. They mostly played songs from the Youngblood album, but of course, classics like She Looks So Perfect, Amnesia and She's Kinda Hot were performed too. Want You Back, their first #1 single, re-enters at #39 this week while Youngblood the album is back at #4.
