Posted November 12, 20186 yr 11th November 2018 It's straight in at 1 for a 3rd time on top for The Cars and Drive, their 1984 hauntingly moving song about mental illness, which became the spine-tingling moment at Live Aid in 1985 when it became a hit all over again when matched with famine footage. The odd mix made it heartbreaking all over again, and it topped for a second time. This time round it's a new orchestral version from an album of 80's classics re-imagined as orchestral works. It doesn't work with all of the choices, but 3 of the more radical and tasteful versions that it suits all chart again - another 1984/5 chart-topper from Foreigner, and Bronski Beat also from 1984. They join Radio Gaga, Queen's '84 chart-topper which climbs into the 20 following a viewing of the Bohemian Rhapsody movie where it was the re-made Live Aid footage that showcased it again. Queen also enter with Seven Seas Of Rhye, a 1974 chart-topper for me, We Will Rock You, 1977 former chart-topper, and others including 2 new entries from A Night At The Opera, which has re-entered the UK charts is response to the movie: Love Of My Life has never charted before, and neither has the fab '39 - in at 39. That means just one week on top for Black Atlass after entering last week, as veteran rapper Ice Cube, known mostly for his brilliant It Was A Good Day social commentary song from 1989, returns with his career-best new song Arrest The President. It's brilliant, pure vitriolic poetry spouting so many truths in clever ways it should become a "How To Do It" study. The last time a great record slagged-off a sitting President it was Stevie Wonder's You Haven't Done Nothin' in 1974, which a more generalised critique: this is one is very very specific, and doesn't let other younger more successful rappers get away with their stupidity either, telling it like it is. Reminds me of when I loved rap, when it was saying something, not self-ego-boosting money-chasing sexist cliches, as some less talented artists have tended to drift into. It's a hugely busy week, 18 new entries pushing out loads of tracks early and abruptly, and many big falls and climbs amid the changes: Rhys shoots into the 40 at 9, The Knocks and Sofi Tukker go top 10, Boyzone leap into the top 30 as Take That climb and Backstreet Boys enter at 59, their first new track in 13 years to chart, and helping to knock out New Kids On The Block and preventing an 80's boyband reunion. If you had said in 1998 that I would be simultaneously charting new tracks by the aforementioned in 2018 I would have been incredulous. And yet what were the Chances? Ariana Grande's good UK chart-topper enters the 40 her 3rd of the year, Muse also grab a 3rd of the year, Meghan Trainor also grabs a 3rd, and there are returns from Ariana & The Rose, a top5 act from a few years back, ditto Nicky Romero, Walk Off The Earth, X Amabassadors, and oldie Star, from Kiki Dee, is back following some itunes sales TV ad-pushed action, a top 10 from early 1981. 1 NEW 1 1 DRIVE (SYMPHONIC VERSION) The Cars 170000 2 1 1 2 SHADOWS Black Atlass 285000 3 4 3 4 DIAMOND HEART Alan Walker & Sophia Somajo 219500 4 6 4 5 JOY. for KING & COUNTRY 186500 5 NEW 5 1 ARREST THE PRESIDENT Ice Cube 60000 6 2 1 9 A CHANGE IS GONNA COME Sam Cooke 447650 7 7 7 5 GRAVITY Paul Weller 207300 8 3 3 5 NEED YOU TONITE Mylo featuring Judie Tzuke 197700 9 43 9 4 STARFISH Rhys featuring FELIX SANDMAN 81000 10 20 10 2 BRAZILIAN SOUL The Knocks featuring Sofi Tukker 62000 11 5 2 7 MAD AT YOU Noah Cyrus & Gallant 380750 12 13 12 4 HEAVEN LET ME IN Friendly Fires 95850 13 8 1 7 TOOGOODTOBETRUE Gallant featuring Sufjan Stevens & Rebecca Sugar 556000 14 21 14 2 FRENCH CLASS HalfNoise 48500 15 12 12 5 ALL I AM Jess Glynne 115600 16 9 5 5 TIME CAN HEAL A MAN SAVEUS 233000 17 27 17 3 RADIO GAGA Queen 59400 18 NEW 18 1 I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS (SYMPHONIC VERSION) Foreigner 22000 19 NEW 19 1 SEVEN SEAS OF RHYE Queen 21000 20 10 1 6 SHE Charles Aznavour 472000 21 17 2 8 NOTHING BURNS LIKE THE COLD Snoh Aalegra featuring Vince Staples 507750 22 15 15 4 LOST IN JAPAN (REMIX) Shawn Mendes & Zedd 84500 23 11 3 7 IDEA The O’My’s featuring Chance The Rapper 374250 24 71 24 2 LOVE Boyzone 24800 25 14 9 7 UNDER MY SKIN Gabrielle 146050 26 62 26 2 BABY Clean Bandit featuring Marina & The Diamonds & Luis Fonzi 25900 27 16 11 6 ON MY WAY Bunt. featuring Leah Haywood 145800 28 18 18 4 I’M STILL HERE Sia 84300 29 35 29 5 BACK & FORTH MK, Jonas Blue & Becky Hill 58550 30 19 9 7 MOVES Olly Murs featuring Snoop Dogg 212000 31 24 1 21 HEY LOOK MA, I MADE IT Panic! Nice to see Ariana and The Rose in your chart and I will definitely have a wee listen! Great overall! Hi Uhsting, thanks for calling in! :) I hadn't realised joy. was a Christian track but it makes sense for an overwhelmingly positive message song. I'm very much into message songs at the moment, positive, critical (Ice Cube) or just "why can't we all just get along cos we SO need to right now" (my Buzzjack Song choice) B-) Hope you like Ariana & The Rose! :) cheers!
November 19, 20186 yr Author New Christmas single from Bucks Fizz. Hi Alex, thanks for the tip, I played it and I bought it right away, my first new Xmas single for this year, sweet old fashioned video and xmas mood. My seconf xmas purchase was...also The Fizz, and their lovely version of my fave Xmas of 1988 track, Keeping The Dream Alive - it wasn't really a xmas song as such but had the xmas vibe with the Paul McCartney-ish production and melody, and suits them well! :)

Farting around the edges of a classic just detracts from it's perfection, but if you re-invent it it takes on a new mood that is different from the original, and then there's a point to it. I love that Mylo track, and the Judy Tzuke samples are just gorgeous, the lushness is topnotch, SO glad you entered it into BJSC and made me love it! Thanks! :D cheers! B-)
