Chart Commentary

 

 

Continuing his domination, 15 year old Italian popstar Matteo Markus Bok claims three spots in this week's top 40 once again. His first #1 single, El Ritmo (AHI AHI AHI) which debuted at #1 in September, rebounds another two places to #31. Current single In the Middle spends a third week at the top, joining just three other songs in spending 3+ weeks at the summit in 2018 - Troye Sivan notched up 3 weeks with My My My!, Why Don't We had 4 wees with Hooked, and froy's sideswipe spent 5 non-consecutive weeks at the top spot. Additionally, Matteo claims another top 10 hit this week. Although Christmas is still a little way off, the Christmas music has begun already for me and Matteo's This Christmas, a #35 hit in Christmas week last year, makes a much bigger impact second time round. It climbs 10 spots to #8, becoming his fourth top 10 hit to date.

Releasing her first single in four years, former Girls Aloud star Cheryl secures this week's highest debut. Love Made Me Do It is the lead single from her forthcoming fifth studio album. It becomes her sixth top 10 single, continuing her run of 100% top 10 hit singles since my chart started at the very end of 2011. She achieved a double whammy of #1 singles in 2014 with Crazy Stupid Love and I Don't Care, while Call My Name was incredibly unlucky to miss #1 with a mammoth chart run! She also has a huge #1 single in Something New with Girls Aloud, which holds the record for most weeks at #1 - a total of 8 across three separate stints.

Achieving her first hit for two years, Madison Beer storms to a top 10 debut with new single Hurts Like Hell. Surprisingly, it becomes her highest charting track so far, outdoing the #9 peak of Melodies from five years ago (!). Although her mini album As She Pleases made my album chart this year, none of the singles charted, nor the vast majority of the tracks she's released since 2015's All For Love (charted in 2016). The song features Offset, who scores his first solo hit (he also made #7 as part of Migos on Bon Appétit with Katy Perry last year).

Achieving a selection of hits in the past three years, Halsey finally achieves her first top 10 hit this week. New Americana was her first chart hit - it peaked at #22 when her debut album Badlands came out after initially charting off the back of BJSC. Closer, her Chainsmokers collaboration, was her highest charting single at #20 until now. Without Me debuts at #10 this week, over a month after its release - a huge grower! A big achievement considering her second album produced no hits at all.
