For their remix album this year Justice beefed up the production of their 2016 album track 'Stop' and whilst the change is subtle it really improves the whole song, making it more dancey. I'm not too big on them, as the chart history shows, but they seem to deliver a great tune once every few years.

2018 has been a big year for BJSC, in which my country South Danaelanda had nine songs all qualify. All nine make the EOY list (our 10th entry and sole DNQ does not, as it dates from 2010 and had most of its sales in 2011), and this was the first of the year and also appears as the lowest. Darren Styles was someone I was familiar with, with him having a few minor hits in the 00s as himself and as part of Styles & Breeze, but he seemingly disappeared for the whole of this decade as he had yet to chart in Thermo's hot hits which dates back to late August 2010. I was intrigued and checked the song out however, and it was an instant success for me, charting at #51 on a few days of 'sales' before quickly becoming the year's first number one two weeks later (it's also the first #1 with a full chart run to drop out in this countdown). It's a banger in the literal sense, though importantly it has room to breathe in the verses before the beat starts pounding in the drop. Worth a listen if you like your dance beats hard (though it is quite tame for the genre which helps it here, I'm no huge fan of the really hard stuff).

What a year it has been for Sir Sir Calvin Harris, who spent 14 weeks at #1 in the UK this year, six of those with this. In my chart however it was one of the unluckiest #2s of the year as it was released in the same week as Jess Glynne's 'All I Am' (which does appear higher in the countdown). Perhaps it's karma for Sam Smith's other boring/annoying singles that he doesn't get a #1 in this chart on what was definitely his biggest opportunity, but as I expected he is very good on this, as he is on all the dance tracks he's featured on; thankfully we get none of the painful oversinging that made tracks like 'Too Good At Goodbyes' not to my liking. It's a very smooth dance track, which plods along in the best possible way, and seems to be Calvin's style at the moment; and perfect as an end of summer track to follow the summer anthem that was 'One Kiss' (we'll get to that a lot later on). Calvin as my second favourite act of all time only seems to cement that position with every big single he does and I trust that he'll make Rag'n'Bone Man sound good on his next single that should be out a week from now (excitement!). You all know this song anyway so I needn't explain more. Just another solid tune from Calvin which sounds effortless, but no one makes music quite like him.

You saw Armin and Shapov not too long ago with 'Our Origin' and they're back again with 'The Last Dancer' which was their first collaboration. It's tracks like this that I like the most from Armin as it's a big anthemic trance track with a great synth line. It's also got a great breakdown section which makes the second drop sound big as ever.

We see TheFatRat once again and 2017 was a brilliant year for him. In 2016 'The Calling' was the #4 single of the year and he gets another year-end top 10 hit in 2017 with 'Fly Away' which became his first #1 single, managing to sneak a week in-between 'Rollin' and 'Instruction'. The song has been described as trap but it's so different that I wouldn't class it as such, TheFatRat is a master of his own genre to be honest. If all you've heard of him are his BJSC entries then this is a different side to him and I would strongly recommend if you're into non mainstream dance. The airy vocals and unique production give this an otherworldly feel which I love. I've also been loving the

of this which propelled it back into the top 10.

It was the JJD remix that did most of the 'selling' for it this year, it's a glitch hop take on the track which is almost as good as the original. Both TheFatRat and JJD have a song each yet to come later in the countdown.

"In My Mind" was a nice dance song, hell it's the #1 song in Germany's Year-End list.

I like the Calvin Harris remix of "The Weekend" more than the original.

And "Darkside" has got to be Alan's best hit this year.

I much preferred 'Dreamer' to 'Dancing Alone', which I think you were the opposite. I'd put 'Darkside' with Alan's best though not quite up with 'Faded' and 'Sing Me To Sleep'.

Promises was actually quite a breath of fresh air (even though the verse sounds suspiciously similar to part of Kodaline's 'Worth It') and I preferred it to One Kiss although that was great as well. I think I may have listened to Stop when it was in your weekly chart? It's a solid tune anyway!

Another brilliant track from Nora En Pure, who has appeared a few times already between 101-250 but this is her first of two appearances in the Hot 100. The production is lush as always, but what puts this above most of her other tracks are the strings, which give it more of a classic feel. If I hadn't already sent 'Trailblazer' to BJSC this'd be a strong potential so take a listen if you liked that.

Chicane has had a brilliant year here with the year's second-biggest album, three tracks of which are in the Hot 100. This Chicane album is a lot better than his last few so it's sad to see just how little attention he gets now, I also believe it's his first album to not have charted in the UK top 200. This one was the instant standout of the album tracks (and also became a future single), and similarly to 'Gorecki' (yet to come) it is actually a cover/reworking of a former BJSC entry, though it's a lot better than the original in my opinion! Chicane gives it an uplifting house treatment and we also have a better vocalist in Rosalee O'Connell, which together makes for a lush track.

You may remember Standerwick and HALIENE from BJSC winner 'Saving Light', and in 2018 they finally followed that single up with another collaboration (though without Gareth Emery, we had to wait even longer for his follow-up). Whilst it's only half as good, that's still great and it quickly shot into the top five. HALIENE is one of my fave trance vocalists, she puts so much feeling into every song, and Standerwick's production here is solid too. It's a lovely melodic song, worth checking out if you're into vocal trance.

2018 was another great year for Jax Jones, though not quite up with 2017 we did get this in the summer and 'Play' just recently which is still gaining. 'Ring Ring' was quite a big change in direction for Jax, and one I wasn't too keen on when I heard the preview, but it instantly shot into my top ten upon release so it was no disappointment in that regard (though coming off the back of three consecutive million sellers its chart performance here looks a bit poor). I'd have preferred another house bop of course but this is a great fun and catchy tune too. It doesn't really sound like a Jax Jones track but I'll take it for what it is, it's got a great groove so he's done well here. Mabel's personality shows off well too and... Rich The Kid was quite a random choice for the token rent-a-rapper, his part's not really needed but it's not off-putting either so no complaints there.

Just outside the Hottest 50 is someone I didn't expect we'd hear from again. Tyga seemingly disappeared after his Chris Brown collab album in 2015, except he actually released SIX albums afterwards and nobody noticed or cared. Anyway of course you know this song, which was big in both the UK and US but never crossed over to Australia, and was a real return to form for him, becoming his biggest hit in this chart since breakthrough hit 'Rack City'. Tyga isn't that essential of a rapper, but the beat here by D.A. Domain is undeniable, as is the hook (tayssssss, tayssssss). It was also good to have Offset be the Migos rent-a-rapper of choice here too, he fits the beat well and I much prefer him to Quavo.

I Miss You and Darkside are my two favourites since I last commented! :wub: Taste was surprisingly catchy too, definitely one of the best US rap hits of the past 12 months.

Promises: Not as good as One Kiss, but still a brilliant tune

Taste: This one's okay. Love the spine-chilling beat with those woah-oh-ohs sounding like Charlie Puth

So glad 'Taste' worked its way into my affections, I definitely didn't get the song at first but that beat was just undeniable in the end!

I haven't really been a fan of Jax Jones's big hits over the recent years (although I did love House Work) but I really enjoyed Ring Ring. Mabel sounds great on it and I do agree that Rich The Kid's verse was a bit pointless but not too distracting.

 

Tyga certainly wasn't someone I was expecting to get a massive hit in 2018 but Taste was a bit of a banger. I was a fan of this 3 big singles with Chris Brown (Loyal, Ayo, Do It Again) so it was nice to see he can release some good music without him. :lol:

Post Malone's had a great 2018 with three songs of his making the top half of this year's Hot 100, though only just as we start out the top 50 with 'Psycho'! After the great 'rockstar' which we'll get to later, anticipation was high for a follow-up single and he didn't disappoint me with this, despite the song not going down too well on Buzzjack as you'd expect. Standard brag rap it may be, but the beat is more lively than 'Congratulations' which you could easily compare this to (that song never made my chart), and I enjoy Post's style of sing-rapping. It's one of his more subtle hits, but also one of his better ones. Just really enjoy the flow of it, it's a song to vibe to. Can we stop letting Ty Dolla $ign be a hot rent-a-rapper though? This is literally his third consecutive appearance in my EOY list and I've never charted a single song where he is the lead artist. :lol: Not that he's bad in this song, just pointless.

And coincidentally we get the second Post Malone appearance right after the first. Though of course he is simply a feature here, most people would associate the song with him first. In fact, other than this song Tiësto has not had a very good year, with this being his sole chart entry for 2018; he has scored more hits in every other year - but it is his first Y/E Hot 100 appearance since 2015 and his fifth in all. It's not a very Tiësto-sounding song but his usual sound (and definitely not his trance sound which he abandoned around 10 years ago) wasn't going to score him a big chart hit, and regardless of any iffy lyrics this is a bit of a choon. Post is good as ever here delivering the choruses and bridge, and Preme does his best Post Malone impression too so it's as if Post is doing the whole track. It's refreshing to hear Post with a dance beat anyway as it's obviously something we wouldn't get with any of his albums, and it was great to see it smash in a climate where we don't get a whole lot of dance hits.
