Commentary

 

Above & Beyond lose their second of four entries before the top 40 with 'Alright Now', which was actually their first single off the album but only charted following the album's release. It's another beauty of a trance track, something which A&B are the best at making at the moment. Justine's vocals are lush and fit the track so well, and I'm glad we got a few tracks with her on this time as she only featured on one track from their 2015 album 'We Are All We Need'. I also enjoy the reassuring lyrics of this, it's simple but a lovely sentiment.

With deadmau5 having been absent for over a year besides 2 compilations I didn't care for I was very much excited by the prospect of new music, and not only that but finally it was time for round 2 of Rob Swire collaborations, nine years after 'Ghosts n' Stuff' which is one of my faves of his. This quickly cemented itself as one of my faves of his too, spending a while in the top 40 including a few weeks before it was even officially released as a demo had leaked onto YouTube. More impressively, the version that racked up most of the plays was the

(ten minutes, though the demo version was slightly shorter), and as I got familiar with the full mix I'm not so keen on the radio edit (though I've linked it alongside the disturbing video if you want to watch that). It's a brilliant song that is everything I want in a deadmau5 song, the only surprise here is that it never made my top 10, but it does become the highest he's made it on the Y/E chart.

Commentary

 

One of the most amazing dance songs ever, I like to think that is why this song was a hit. It uses the same sample that Flo Rida uses in "Good Feeling" from Etta James (who sadly died recently) Avicii's production in this song is epic and flawless - I won't hear a bad word against it, it's also been loved enough in 2012 to enter that EOY chart too. It currently has over 230 plays on iTunes, only beaten by an EOY #1 contender. This song would probably be much higher if it wasn't out in the last few months of the year.

Avicii is at #42 with 2011 hit "Levels" which continued to be a hit in the new year, after finishing at #8 last year. For me it is the best song that has come from 2011, even better than my EOY #1 "Party Rock Anthem".

What more can I say about this? It's quite simply my favourite song ever by quite some distance, and following the worst possible news of the year that Avicii had passed away this shot back up to #1 for its overall 7th week. In his short career he quickly racked up an outstanding discography, and a Thermo's hot hits chart history that no other artist has come close to matching, but never quite managed to top this. The song for me is a timeless classic and after 7 years and 400 plays later it's still a banger and amazing to listen to.

 

Avicii has two more appearances in the chart including an EOY #1 contender.

Promises was actually quite a breath of fresh air (even though the verse sounds suspiciously similar to part of Kodaline's 'Worth It') and I preferred it to One Kiss although that was great as well. I think I may have listened to Stop when it was in your weekly chart? It's a solid tune anyway!

I haven't heard that Kodaline song, and I imagine Calvin & Sam hadn't either so I doubt they ripped it off. :P

 

Wow at the chart run for Promises! A shame it can only get them to #58 here but still! :o

I Miss You and Darkside are my two favourites since I last commented! :wub: Taste was surprisingly catchy too, definitely one of the best US rap hits of the past 12 months.

They're both great, glad you enjoy Darkside particularly as I don't remember you being overly keen on Alan's previous hits. Taste is one of the highest rap songs here so I have to agree.

 

Promises: Not as good as One Kiss, but still a brilliant tune

Yep One Kiss is a lot better, but Promises is amazing also.

I don't get the Charlie Puth comparison but yes the backing vocals are enjoyable.

 

So glad 'Taste' worked its way into my affections, I definitely didn't get the song at first but that beat was just undeniable in the end!

Such a good beat, and the same producer is also responsible for making Kodak Black sound tolerable on 'ZEZE' which is quite something lol.

 

I haven't really been a fan of Jax Jones's big hits over the recent years (although I did love House Work) but I really enjoyed Ring Ring. Mabel sounds great on it and I do agree that Rich The Kid's verse was a bit pointless but not too distracting.

 

Tyga certainly wasn't someone I was expecting to get a massive hit in 2018 but Taste was a bit of a banger. I was a fan of this 3 big singles with Chris Brown (Loyal, Ayo, Do It Again) so it was nice to see he can release some good music without him. :lol:

Well I prefer his more dancey ones unsurprisingly but at least Ring Ring was still good for my ears, I was worried when people said they didn't like it but of course I did enjoy it.

Some rappers just have random comebacks I guess, for people like Tyga it really depends on the song as his name isn't enough to sell itself. Never really enjoyed the Ryder version oops, Chicane really makes it work for me.

2018 was a time for random comebacks and we got the second unexpected Darude comeback of the decade after he briefly made Thermo's hot hits in 2015. 'Surrender' also brought trance producer Ashley Wallbridge to the chart for the first time, and was released on Armada sub-label Garuda which he runs with Gareth Emery (which may explain the similarity this song has with Emery's 'Saving Light'). For now it's Darude's highest charting song, though it still isn't his biggest seller (no prizes for guessing). It's simply a great uplifting vocal trance song, it doesn't sound like Darude's older songs but this new style is very much welcome as it's what I'm really into at the moment.

The first of three appearances for the Queen, 2018 was Jess' best year since 2014 when she broke through and she did very well to avoid the 'sophomore slump', with four #1s scored in the year, the first artist to do so since Avicii in 2015. 'All I Am' however was the only instant #1, beating fierce competition from other new releases by Calvin Harris and Disclosure, and it returned to #1 following the album release. It sees Jess go back to her roots with a great lite house beat, helped by the 'Finally' sample which works really well here. The easy comparison to make is with 'Hold My Hand', but contrary to popular opinion I consider this to be just as good if not better. It's a very uplifting and danceable song with a great vocal which is just what the charts need a bit more of. The lyrics are simple but effective, the beat is groovy, Jess is an outstanding vocalist, it ticks all the boxes.

George FitzGerald was also someone I never expected to make my chart again, and also someone I forgot about as his one previous hit only charted for a few weeks. This was brought to my attention towards the end of 2017 however from R1 playlist support and an Adele mashup that was also played. It's a rather repetitive instrumental, and towards the electronic side of the EDM spectrum; but it has enough layers and a dancey beat to make it work.

Commentary

 

2018 was a great year for Sigala and the year which his debut album/hits compilation finally got released. And of course it's this which manages to become his highest entry of the year, though it doesn't quite get to scrape the top 40 as 'Came Here For Love' did. It also brought Paloma Faith back to the chart four years after teaming up with, confusingly, the similarly named Sigma. I'm not a fan of her solo material but she proved again that she's surprisingly good on a dance track, and this is a nice sweet song that suits her vocal. Sigala also manages to keep his tropical house sound fresh in the current year, something many others of that time failed to do, and it's great to have another dance act who can consistently rack up the hits without completely pandering to Spotify (he does a little but not on the level of Jonas Blue, David Guetta et al.). Just another solid song from him and hopefully we hear more soon (because none of the album tracks are worth pushing).

And unfortunately for Jess she just misses out on top 40 with two of her entries, but she still has one more to go. This served as the official lead single to her 2nd album though 'These Days' was also tacked on at the end to help sell it. I was hoping for one of her dancey songs (which we eventually got with 'All I Am') but this was far from a disappointment and quickly entered at #2 before kicking Calvin Harris off to claim her third #1 (and it was a legit #1 here too). It's got a lovely lyric sentiment as many Jess songs do, and as I've said I love her voice. A great comeback and I'm glad it managed to be very big for her.

Levels is a wonderful song and something I don't think we'd see in the charts if it were released now sadly :( One of Avicii's best and I'm glad you can still enjoy it.

Gorgon City get their second Hottest 40 appearance a year after 'Real Life' with Duke Dumont, quite impressive considering they commercially peaked a while ago but they really impressed with official follow-up single 'Go Deep', which featured two acts who had both charted once before under different names (fun fact!). Unfortunately this got no attention or radio support but it's a really great song, it's got everything you want from Gorgon City, a banging deep house beat and catchy hook. The album was fairly good too but nothing else quite on this level so hopefully we hear something new later this year.

Not being fussed with 'Congratulations', this surprised me with just how good it was, no wonder it just about instantly topped charts all over the world. Trap at its absolute best, hook is ridiculously catchy.

Its total sales would put it in this year's top 10, which speaks volumes about its quality! At least it just about manages to make the top 40 though not in the year you'd associate the song with. One of the best rap tracks we've had all decade for me, this getting Post Malone really big was much deserved and he's yet to come close to beating it.

The 2 Post Malone tunes have been my favourites out of the recent batch.

 

After initially finding it boring, Psycho eventually grew on me loads. It is a lot more laid-back than most of his other hits and has a great relaxing vibe. I even think it's probably the best Ty Dolla $ign has ever sounded too.

 

Rockstar is also brilliant, one of my favourite 2017 hits. Well deserving of reaching #1 in the official charts.

CLiQ were one of the biggest breakthroughs on my chart this year, coming from nowhere to get two of the biggest hits of the year. We'll come to their first smash a lot later as it's a big contender this year, but they proved themselves with the follow-up which racked up over half the sales that 'Wavey' managed. It's a great bouncy house esque dance bop with a catchy rap (from someone who sounds like Alika but presumably isn't, given they're uncredited), which of course couldn't give them a second UK hit but was an instant smash here.

I haven't been overly keen on Oliver Heldens' alias HI-LO; for whatever reason his releases as HI-LO generally aren't as strong, with the exception of this (oddly, credited to him and his alias). It's quite simply a banging bit of industrial esque future house and a real return to form for him in general, as he didn't have anything in last year's Hottest 100. The drop just can't be denied.
