Commentary

 

Chicane's highest entry falls here, which is a cover of the Lamb song which I never cared for when it was in BJSC (and subsequently forgot about) but this version really brings out the best parts of the song. The lyrics are beautiful, Chicane's production and the string backing are amazing, the vocalist is great. I do love a great emotional dance track and this most certainly is one, and really worth checking out, particularly in its full version but the video edit is linked above. The song really reignited my love for Chicane's music and the album eventually became my 2nd favourite of the year. Quite amazing that he's been going for over 20 years and is now better than ever.

Only two songs in the top 40 spent less than 20 weeks in the chart to get there and both come from Avicii, no doubt if he'd released earlier in the year this would be going for top ten but I've gotta stick by my chart rules. 'Without You' was the instant stand out of the EP, entering straight at #1 despite strong competition from himself and also himself, and holding the position for five weeks. It's a song we got a big teaser of as he'd played the demo version in a live show before his retirement, which got uploaded to YouTube in low quality, so the anticipation was high and of course he delivered. It sounded just like a classic Avicii song which I was so pleased to hear, the chorus is huge and the drop is explosive. Deserved to be huge, and it was across Europe but the UK decided it could only let one of his get big, which we will see soon.

Well this is rather unfortunate to just miss the top 10 after being there in the YTD for much of the year, but it's certainly one of my favourite Avicii tracks, for the reasons I outlined last year. It's a track that's tinged with sadness now, as it was used for many of the tributes that followed his untimely death, though it's still a great song and it is pleasing that this has a similar Spotify streaming total to 'Lonely Together'* as both are excellent songs that deserve the recognition.

It was time for the long awaited part 3 of TheFatRat and Laura Brehm's collaborations, which from anticipation alone would have entered high but it was such a great song it got TheFatRat his second #1 and Laura her first (though their #2 hit 'The Calling' is still their best). If you've been following Thermo's hot hits for the past few years TheFatRat is a name you would have seen as this is now his third consecutive year with at least one song in the Hottest 20 (he had two in 2016, and one per year since), and if you haven't then I'd recommend this as he is my current favourite non-mainstream artist. He makes melodic trap and glitch hop which aren't usually my favourite subgenera but he's really unique and good at it. Helped by Laura's wonderful vocal, this is a concept song about being lost in space which is an interesting lyrical theme, and the production certainly suits it too.

Commentary

 

Only two songs spent more time in the top 10 than this song within the tracking year, but not enough weeks spent in the chart entirely means it unfortunately just misses out on a top 10 position. It was of course the commercial follow-up to 'Cola' that CamelPhat remixed, having been originally just Au/Ra's song. It's a great song about her anxiety, a fairly relatable topic that we don't get many pop songs about. Although I'm not so keen on it in original form, CamelPhat vastly improve it with their impressive house production, which really adds to the mood of the song. They're a real breath of fresh air in the commercial dance music scene at the moment so it was great to see this become a real sleeper hit, and hopefully 'Breathe' can give them a third top 40 hit (and it'll almost certainly appear in my 2019 EOY). As for Au/Ra, she's impressive (particularly so for her young age) and hopefully she features on some more dance tracks as she was great on both this and 'Darkside'.

After the massive 'Real Life' I was keen to hear what Duke Dumont would release next, and to my surprise he went down the nu-disco route but it really works, and though it just misses the top 10 it is his highest EOY finish yet (but not my favourite song of his ever). Ebenezer's sing-rapping works well with it too and it's simply a very groovy track which I of course was going to love so I can't fault him for switching his style up a bit here. Unfortunately it made no radio or chart impact and it was only one of two songs he released in 2018, with the other being rather disappointing, but we're due another one rather soon so that could potentially dent the 2019 EOY. It's great to still have him around anyway.

Only three of the above were #1 singles, amazingly low you may think, but this was also the case for last year's Hottest 10. As last year showed anyhow it is very possible that one of the non-#1s could end up being the #1 of the year anyhow, it could even be Jax Jones again! There's also 4 BJSC entries there (3 of my own), I believe that's a record high, and 4 UK top 40 hit singles which sadly is a record low (and of the others, only 'Wavey' dented the top 100).

Really like "Without You" and "Panic Room"!

As for your predicction, I don't know... it is either between MK, Avicii and Calvin/Dua for #1.

Hopefully I'm right with one of the three!

Gorecki is a lovely song, I loved it from the off and it's one of Chicane's best (out of the few I've heard). Inhale is great too, the vocals really make it for me.

He's not really the best vocalist but he works for the song.

I like both songs about the same, though if we're comparing playcount Inhale wins (93 vs 87). Need U and I Got U both have even more plays however (112 / 101).

Avicii may or may not win, he's a big contender anyhow.

Commentary

 

Starting the top 10 is the year's highest drum n' bass entry and by a long way too. It's a very strong start to the top 10 here and I'm pleased he beat Duke Dumont to it. DnB is not a genre I usually love especially these days but I rediscovered Dimension whilst surfing through YouTube and landing on this song, and now I'd say definitely he is one of the best in the genre. His sound design is very impressive and it stands out strongly for the genre. This song particularly does it for me, helped by the unknown female vocalist as well but I just love Dimension's melodic synths and the drop always gets me hyped. It was held at #3 by 'One Kiss' (still to come) and 'Ultimatum' (#22), and it was also my most successful BJSC entry of the year (and unknowingly a Thelonia potential) - placing 5th and also making the Best Of final. As ever, my most successful of the year isn't my favourite of the year but I'm pleased with this being it for me, it's such a tune. Would recommend if you enjoyed the likes of DJ Fresh and Sub Focus back in the day.

 

side note: 'Desire' actually making the UK top 100 is quite something for 2019, it's great to see Dimension get any sort of chart success and it be the first DnB hit in ages - though I do vastly prefer 'Black Church'
