I hadn't heard of Fisher before but the Australian DJ brought this out which quickly topped the Beatport chart and was apparently the biggest song of Tomorrowland, so I had to check it out and yep, it is brilliant. The bass wobble is something that needs to be a thing in more songs as really makes this infectious, and the accompanying siren with each drop adds to its anthemic appeal too. Overall it's one of those tracks that sound excellently produced despite how repetitive it is, and I'm pleased to see it get Radio 1 and Hot Hits UK support too (coming for an official top 100 chart position maybe?). It could even end up in next year's chart as it'll be heading back into my top 40 this week and it still hasn't got old.

Clean Bandit have had a bit of an iffy 2018, though I can't fully judge yet as I've still yet to listen to their new album (flop fan!). Anyway, their best song of the year for me wasn't 'Solo' and definitely not 'Baby' (which only peaked at #62 in my chart, a proper flop for them), but this one which was actually from 2017. I do like a well done sad dance song and they get it so right here, I like that it's not totally stripped down and still feels like a Clean Bandit song (though I'd have liked some more strings), and Julia does a great vocal on this too (I can even get past the bottle lyric), she's good at emotional singing. The song seemed quite underrated on Buzzjack but it was a big UK hit regardless and is one of my faves of theirs to date (and if only they'd have released in December it'd be top 40 in this EOY!).

Up until this year actually John Gibbons had been very consistent with the quality of his tunes, this turning out to be his 4th consecutive top ten hit (he now has five thanks to his 'Spaceman' remake so hopefully he delivers further in 2019). He's all about fun basic house tunes, which this very much is, but I am a sucker for a well made basic banger. It was also good to see him do another original song here, though I do prefer his two reworkings prior to this (both have crossed a million points). It was well timed for the winter too, though I wished it were summer with every listen haha.

And here's EDX again! This one's a great deep house instrumental, which got sent to Club Bizarre (though not by myself, it is the only song from any edition of the contest to make the Y/E Hot 100) giving it a big push into the top 20. There's not much I can say about this, it's just EDX doing what he does best, he's one of my faves in deep house so take a listen if you like the sound of that.

Losing It is one of the few songs that continues to pop up on my Facebook feed even though none of my friends are really music-y so I can see it being quite big in the new year! Sunglasses in the Rain just missed my EOY Top 100 this year, love the drop and it was the song that really got me into John Gibbons.

This was a rather odd hit, but it quickly took off on Spotify here which really helped accelerate its ascent up this chart too, and it was great to see a dance song without the typical pop song structure break the UK top 40 (and eventually top five) again. I initially wasn't too sure of it, especially as it is a reworking of the brilliant Ivan Gough et al. song of the same name (EOY #63 in 2012) and it didn't quite do that version justice in my view, but Dynoro has a great unique take on the song, giving it a rather dark and tense texture in the buildup and pitching the vocal right up. The drop is very clever too, with the rattling beat and the subtle interpolation of 'L'amour Toujours' (which gives Gigi his first hit here as he must have demanded to receive a credit). Hope we hear more from him soon though I don't expect the magic will be re-created (and judging by his other songs so far, he seems very much a one trick producer).

Giving us one last taste of 'funk wav' before undergoing his next rebrand, Calvin started the year off remixing the previously unheard (by me) SZA track 'The Weekend'. It stays true to her RnB sound and compliments her vocal nicely, and whilst it's not a big Calvin bop I grew to very much like this style of his. It just sticks with the groove throughout the track and I like the laidback feel of it (also reflected in the lyrics). Unfortunately this couldn't climb high enough to give Calvin another UK top 40 but he's never gone from the chart for too long, as we'll see when we get to his next two entries.

Following the underwhelming singles 'Tired' and 'All Falls Down', and the good but not brilliant 'The Spectre', I really was starting to think Alan Walker had lost it. Well I was so wrong as his album is really good (all the other tracks are better than AFD (which did eventually chart too)), and he released one of the standouts in 'Darkside' in the summer, which then re-peaked following 'Diamond Heart's release. Au/Ra and Tomine sing beautifully which really adds to the emotional impact and Alan is on top form with the production. He's now one of my faves again and largely thanks to this.

Arty is someone who for me seemingly fell off the map around 2015, I just lost interest after a run of poor singles (particularly in 2017 when he started making "Spotify dance")... but then this came up on my radar and to my surprise, Arty is back on past form!! This one takes a pop song structure, but it still very much feels like Arty again, with a 'commercial trance' feel and a big melodic drop. The lyrics and vocal are fairly standard but work as they should, and ever since this Arty has made 2018 possibly his best yet. Look out for 'Perfect Strangers' next year, which is pretty much this song again but just as good if not better.

 

*trance isn't at all commercial of course, but if it was this kind of thing would be a likely hit (and it did rack up 18m Spotify streams anyhow!)

And after one comeback story here's another. You of course know David Zowie for UK #1 hit 'House Every Weekend' and precisely nothing else, and quite rightly, he'd been awfully quiet ever since save a few remixes and a poor (long awaited) follow-up single. Then this appeared on my radar and he instantly lost his one-hit wonder status in this chart. Losing It is one of the few songs that continues to pop up on my Facebook feed even though none of my friends are really music-y so I can see it being quite big in the new year! Sunglasses in the Rain just missed my EOY Top 100 this year, love the drop and it was the song that really got me into John Gibbons.

Hopefully it can make the top 40 though I'm not sure it will, at least it's set for top 100 this week.

Following the big European hit 'More Than You Know' I was excited for what these two would bring out next, and in my view this is even better, the chorus feels more anthemic on this. I'm so excited that Swedish House Mafia are returning from hiatus in 2019 however, and if this song's anything to go by they should have no problem making another great song. It also brought Trevor Guthrie back from obscurity to finally remove his one-hit wonder status after five years and it was good to hear from him again.

"In My Mind" was a nice dance song, hell it's the #1 song in Germany's Year-End list.

I like the Calvin Harris remix of "The Weekend" more than the original.

You all guessed it, it was always going to be Jax Jones at #1 here, helped massively by spending 50 out of the 52 weeks of the year in the chart, as well as spending 22 weeks in the top 10 which is a record (about to be beaten by 'Lonely Together' but still impressive). This is undoubtedly my favourite song of 2017 so the point system here is very accurate, with this being the only song to pass 2 million chart points. What makes this song the 13/10 moment it is then? For one the brilliant production which samples the groovy bassline of 'Body Language' and turns it into an upbeat commercial house banger. Secondly the fab and sassy vocals of RAYE who is perfect for this song, from her 'ooh na na ay's to the spoken interlude, it all works. The song is just super addictive and never gets old. It's still in my chart now making it my longest chart runner ever. The only thing it didn't do was make #1, where it was blocked by BJSC entry Aly & Fila while the hype for that was stronger, but that now means Jax Jones becomes the first to have an EOY #1 with a non-#1 single, and RAYE also the first to have an EOY #1 with no #1s to her name at all (Jax's 'Instruction' would later spend two weeks at #1, though that only made #24 in the EOY). I am so looking forward to Jax Jones' 2018, and I really would love an album from him but not sure if he's planning one.

This eventually spent 70 weeks in the chart, which makes it, by some way, the longest runner in Thermo's hot hitstory. It's still a proper banger and will be finishing very high in my end of decade chart (only a year from now!) so unsurprisingly it manages to spend a second year in the Hot 100.

Commentary

 

Avicii gave us six tracks on comeback EP but it was really three of them that stood out to me. This was one of them, entering at #2 only behind 'Without You' and would have easily been a #1 if he'd released the tracks one-by-one. It's got everything we love about the new Avicii, right from the acoustic guitar opening to the synth breakdown. It sounds like it would fit very well on the 'Stories' album and I'd say is even better than most of that album. He hasn't lost it at all and I'm very excited for what he'll release this year.

This one was heading for the lower end of my Hot 100 this year, or just outside, with a significant new year revival into the top 20... and then we know what happened next. :( This is another brilliant release of his of course, and it now sits in my top 10 Avicii tracks, no easy feat for an artist with a discography as strong as his. The lyrics are particularly poignant in the new context, and it was great to see this track get a little more recognition on Buzzjack, though as it was never a proper single it'll be forever an underrated/underdiscovered gem in the real world. Well worth a listen if this passed you by and you enjoyed some of his more folk inspired material.

And from one act with four tracks in the Hot 100, we go to the other. Above & Beyond have had a brilliant year, having released the album of the year and getting five top 10 singles (four of which appear here). This one has a great build and is rather uplifting (despite the old cliche 'you can never take my soul' being the main lyric). Bedford isn't my favourite regular vocalist of theirs but he does a good job here as ever, though it's the pounding synths from A&B that I love, and the huge payoff when the drop eventually arrives.

Commentary

 

One of the bigger surprises of 2017 was CamelPhat actually getting a crossover hit single but 'Cola' quickly turned from club anthem to chart success. Now I've been following them for a few years now and particularly liked 'Paradigm' and 'Paths'. 'Cola' has even more of a deep house feel to it than previous singles of theirs though and it took me a few listens to really get it, but it's brilliant. The vocal tone really suits the lyrics, which are quite unusual for a dance hit being about a girl getting herself high in the club and the production builds really well, even for the very subtle changes.

This sold pretty much the same this year as last, though lower sales all round mean it finishes 14 places higher. Its total sales would put it in this year's top 10, and yes I like this a lot more than the #61 position suggests! CamelPhat kept delivering in the new year of course with a song just as good as this (if not better) which we'll get to later on in the countdown.
