It's a 3rd week on top (and 7 weeks in total) for the symphonic Cars, keeping off the symphonic Beatles at 2, and just when you think it can't get any more symphonic - it does! Yes even more symphonic covers of oldies are out for the christmas gifting market aimed at people of a "certain age" - hi! Most of them do nothing much to the originals, but those that make an effort turn up as new entries: at 7 - Buddy Holly's highest-ever chart position, a really lovely version of True Love Ways finally getting him into my top 10 charts 60 years after he died, and 50 years after I started charting, just missing his extended posthumous chart career. At 19 it's Cilla's best non-cover, a song gifted by Lennon-McCartney (mostly Paul, I think), It's For You - this one though by the Liverpool Philharmonic, which although not as great as George Martin's original production, doesn't detract from the others in quite the same way as most of the re-imagined Cilla tracks. It previously went top 5 a decade ago or so.

Highest new entry proper is Raaginda, at 17, a lovely Eastern-flavoured instrumental, while a key drama TV show spot has highlighted the gorgeousness of a long-forgotten Connie Francis track, in at 24. That's her 3rd chart entry, all in the 21st century, so belated appreciation from me! Other charting oldies due to adverts, films, TV spots, TV performances: they have all made the itunes 200 so I'm counting them as valid: The Love Affair, the only UK hit version never to chart, and the best version, of Everlasting Love from 1968; Streets Of London from a 1969 album, a re-recorded hit in 1974, and recently re-recorded again for a 3rd time round; See The Day, Dee C. Lee's lovely 1985 biggie, joining her ex Paul Weller in my chart; AWOLNATION back 5 years on; Billy Joel back again 43 years after it first charted in my charts and in the USA; Queen's Highlander single from 1986.

Actual new stuff: Chainsmokers are back, with Kelsea Ballerini in tow, both adding to their hits total; Jean-Michel Jarre's best track off his new album, extending his chart run to 41 years; DNCE return assisting chart debuts from Merk & Kremont; The Beat and Ranking Roger are back with new charting material for the first time in decades, a decent bit of retro-ska, giving them a chart expanse of 39 years, hooray!
