The call of Cape Town hits pop star Will Young

It's just a day before his Cape Town concert kicks off, but British star Will Young is cool, calm and collected.

He is in the city for the first leg of the Unite of the Stars benefit tour, which takes place at the Bellville Velodrome tomorrow.

US heart-throb Marco Hernandez, Italian crooner Patricio Buanne, newcomer Shayne Ward and 1980s pop sensation Bananarama are also set to take to the stage.

"I love Cape Town. I like this area. I like Llandudno too, even though it's further out," says Young, who is wearing jeans, a white striped T-shirt and takkies.

"I'm very excited. It's going to be fun. I haven't ever performed in South Africa."

Young has been in Cape Town four times but this will be his first performance in the city. He has a friend in Cape Town and his godmother lives in Johannesburg.

He says he has considered buying property in Cape Town but has not followed through yet

.

Asked what audiences can expect at his show, he says he will be providing a bit of a "mix and match".

"We haven't decided on the songs but that's good, it means that it can vary."

Audiences may have a chance to hear Home, which is one of his favourite songs on his latest album Keep On. Talking about his career, he describes it as "a lot of hard work".

"There has been a lot happening. I've finished three albums, had seven tours.

After Young's tour of South Africa, which will also include shows in Mossel Bay, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, Durban, a gala dinner in Johannesburg and a performance at the Coca-Cola Dome, Young will head to Gabon where he will track gorillas with the BBC for two weeks.

We are sitting in a restaurant near the Waterfront District and apparently Will was in here for THREE slices of chocolate cheesecake at tea time. He is staying in a house nearby and his parents are here too. Waiter says he was very friendly.

I didn't know that Will was so well known in SA that someone would recognize him :P

Hi everyone,

The organisers told me that he has 6 people with him from his band. I bet they're all loving being here.

The concerts start at 6 our time - they are all 5 hours long - but I'll phone tomorrow to find out if they know when Will will be on stage.

love to you all

Sharon

The multi-platinum selling artist will be performing at the SUNCOAST SUNdeck on 11 November for one unforgettable night only. Supporting acts include 80's pop group Bananarama, singer Patrizio Buanne and jazz star Renee Olstead.

Too true. Thanks for posting TT.

Haven't been able to get on in the last few days - don't seem to have the time to turn round at the moment. Am going into Scotland for 3 days tomorrow, a short break before going into hospital.
