Hold on a minute I think your not getting my point here I'm not attacking the beloved AIWFCIY in any way here simply agreeing with Acerbens point about the chart highlighting the biggest songs of the week for them and for anchristmas song to get no1 it would go against what they want the chart to represent, hence the restrictive rules with regards to songs over 3 years old.

I'm putting myself in the OCC boots and giving you that opinion not giving you my own personal view. If you know anything about me or my posts you'll know I love Xmas songs.

And I think you've misunderstood my point. I didn't suggest that you spoke from your personal opinion and you can read my post again to realise that. Equally, I'm not speaking from my personal opinion of the song either. Ultimately at this time of year, the Christmas songs *are* the most popular and it would be foolish for the industry or the OCC to deny it.

Let's hope they don't then and Mariah can finally make no1 this Friday, pity though it'll not be talked about much due to the lack of countdown on Friday or throughout next week!

I cant fathom anyone who would want xmas songs clogging up the chart, especially on a chart coming out on Dec 28th, let alone one at number 1.

Who wants an official number 1 that no one will be playing or buying the week its officially number 1.

What I would like to see is 2 separate charts, a current chart for anything less than 3 years old and the official one and a catalogue chart for songs 3 years old or more. Record labels can request for a song to go on the current chart under special circumstance. Say an album track taking off from an old album where the song hasn't charted before.

Because the chart is based on what was bought/listened to the previous 7 days not what people are listening to after the chart is broadcast it has never been about now or next week in its 60 odd years.

Exactly this. The chart represents the past 7 days. This Friday's chart includes Christmas Eve AND Christmas Day. Of course the Christmas songs should be represented, and highly too!

Why are you so hung up about a chart that radio 1 won't even broadcast anyway? It doesn't matter that there'll be a load of Christmas songs in the chart because r1 will be playing the end of years chart on Friday.

These are very different times though and the chart needs to move faster and feel more current. The occ obviously think that or they would never introduce the ACR rule.

Does anyone really want to hear a chart run down with 35 xmas songs and a xmas song at number 1 on Dec 28th?

i really don't get peoples distain for xmas songs being in the charts for like 3 or 4 weeks a year. how are they 'clogging' the charts? its christmas for gods sake. the charts reflect what people are listening to so why should it change during xmas? you cant just pick and choose which songs should and shouldn't count. they'll all disappear within a week or two anyway so whats the bother? cheer up!

And why do you think they do that? Because they dont want to play a chart full of xmas songs on dec 28th. This coming weeks chart will be so pointless radio 1 are deliberately not playing it.

at christmas, yer. its just 3 days after xmas a lot of ppl are still off work and visiting friends and family and listening to songs like this

It's not *pointless*. Obviously they're not playing it because of the amount of Christmas songs present, but that doesn't render it pointless. Mariah climbing to #1 after 24 years would be FAR from pointless.

I totally agree with Jake. How many songs are actually losing out because of the festive songs? Perhaps a few low top 40 hits will be missing out, but they'll undoubtedly enter a week on Friday anyway (notably Jax Jones' Play).

People complaining about Christmas songs in the chart but no one is complaining that Spotify rig the bloody thing by putting in playlists
mariah finally getting number 1 would be amazing tbqh. its obviously a song that resonates with almost everybody with a pulse and if so it would be number 1 for just a WEEK. there are 51 more opportunities for your fav to get a hit. i fully welcome the festive surge in the charts every year. barely anyone followed the charts anyway so its not affecting them in the slightest. it just means more xmas bops for the casual listener tuning into radio 1...
Could be the last EVER chance for her or another old Xmas song to get there. Would also be nice to see it peak at no2 for the OMFGs!!

But... the Christmas songs are the most popular tracks this week? Why would you not want the chart to be accurate?

exactly. i know its a weak analogy but how is it different to the likes of michael buble and ronan keating getting number one albums during mothers day? thats what the public have sought out... how dare they deny someone getting a number one.

The only downside of it I guess, you be seeing a lot of music falling out of the chart this Friday, than a week later they all return, but in the end you can't please everyone.
