Nice to see 1999 so high - I wasn't really expecting to like it that much but it was one of my favourite songs in the Top 40 when it finally made it there!

Hasta Luego had me in two minds really, I think the song's quite good actually, but HRVY just annoys me a little :P

Thanks Pete! :D

16 Zedd & Elley Duhé - Happy Now | 13-1-3-6-8-11-14-24-30-35-x (10 weeks)

Without a doubt I'd say this is Zedd's most underrated track. There seemed very little buzz around Happy Now on here when it premiered, and in fact it got slated by some which I never really understood. It's a different type of track, and perhaps less energetic than what he's put out before, but the production is excellent and complement's Elley Duhé's voice so well. The melody is special too, pushing Happy Now ahead of The Middle to become my favourite Zedd track, and as a result he achieves what is comfortably his highest EOY position to date. Happy Now became his third #1 hit in its first full week, making up for the fact it totally missed the UK top 40 thanks to Radio 1 snubbing it. Quite why is confusing still. Nevertheless, it's a brilliant track and I'm delighted Zedd gave us something slightly different to his usual stuff last year, because in my eyes it totally paid off.

15 Ulrik Munther - Before | 2-3-7-8-8-11-14-22-30-37-x (10 weeks)

Now for the highest non-#1 of the countdown! This year, the honour goes to Swedish singer/songwriter, Ulrik Munther. Ulrik's one of my favourite singers of all-time, with six #1 singles in my chart, ever since the start of 2013 when he charted numerous tracks as I discovered his 2011 debut album. That year, he finished by locking out the EOY top 2. Since then, Ulrik's managed a steady run of hits, and Before added to it earlier this year. The lead single from his Are You Alright? EP, Before turned out to be by far the best track from a disappointing bunch. The powerful ballad has some excellent production moments, and as always Ulrik soars with the emotion in the track. It's his highest EOY position in three years, and although it missed #1 in the busiest week of the year (to Marshmello and Anne-Marie, which is still to come so it wasn't unjust!), it's certainly going down as an Ulrik classic in my books.

14 Rita Ora - Let You Love Me | 1-2-4-5-9-13-20-22-22-18-… (10+ weeks)

Continuing an incredible year, Rita Ora notched up her ninth #1 overall and third of 2018 with Let You Love Me, the fourth single from long-awaited sophomore album Phoenix. It felt for ages like Phoenix would never come, and the chart performance of Girls only seemed to increase doubts, so perhaps we have this track to thank for it arriving in the end. Let You Love Me got an instant warm reception, debuting in the UK top 20, higher than Girls ever managed. It's easy to see why; I love Girls and it's higher in my EOY, but Let You Love Me is an objectively better and more well-crafted pop song. The production is sublime, on trend without being copycat, and has Rita's voice ever sounded better? Let's not forget the consistently incredible series of live performances this track's received. It's actually not a track I return to much, but whenever I do, it simply never gets old.

13 Jonas Blue feat. Jack & Jack - Rise | 4-7-6-11-8-1-2-6-11-22-26-28-32-x (13 weeks)

I didn't really expect this song to hit me as hard as it did. Certainly, when the names were announced, I was intrigued but didn't have much in the way of expectations. Jonas Blue's been hit-and-miss over the past couple of years, with a very inconsistent track record. Though Mama did pretty well in my 2017 EOY, the follow-up We Could Go Back was his weakest single to date. However, Rise saw Jonas Blue soar back up to making great music, and even further up, creating his best song to date. Rise debuted at #4 when it came out, before eventually jumping up to #1, becoming the first #1 for both Jonas Blue and Jack & Jack. It was great seeing it become such a big hit in the charts too, very comfortably my favourite of his (well, this and Mama together) and hopefully an indicator of what's to come when he follows up the Blue album one day.

12 Marshmello & Anne-Marie - FRIENDS | 1-2-5-6-5-6-4-7-11-20-23-11-18-27-32-39-x (16 weeks)

Another artist that really exceeded expectations, although this one was less of a shock. Marshmello had made a pretty solid first impression based on Silence and Wolves, both of which I really enjoyed in 2017, and the latter gave him his first top 10 hit in my chart. However, I was very much excited when I heard he had a collaboration with Anne-Marie coming as the next single from Speak Your Mind. The track soared its way to a #1 debut, leading a top 10 that saw seven new tracks, including a brand new top 5 (and Zedd's The Middle dropping 1-6). It was Marshmello's first #1, and Anne-Marie's fourth (a collection that weirdly doesn't include her EOY #4 hit Ciao Adios), and I expected it to remain poised for an EOY top 10 placing, sliding out at the final hurdle. Nevertheless, an impressive outcome for a track that still sounds so fresh to me. I'd rank it second for Anne-Marie's own tracks, only behind Ciao Adios - a huge step up from the likes of Heavy and Then (even if I liked them)!

11 Rita Ora feat. Cardi B, Bebe Rexha & Charli XCX - Girls | 1-1-2-3-3-9-13-7-7-11-18-28-37-39-x (14 weeks)

One of the most controversial songs of the year, I always had a huge soft spot for Rita Ora's bicurious anthem Girls. I didn't listen to the live version from Big Weekend, so the track was fresh to me when I heard the studio version. All four artists involved are favourites of mine, and although perhaps not all of them are needed (Charli's the least necessary on the studio version imo, though a case could be made for Bebe too), I absolutely adore Cardi B's rap, one of her finest moments. The lyrics didn't strike me as problematic and personally I still don't find them so, though I guess we all see things differently. I loved Rita singing about her experimentation (even if alcohol-fuelled) and the song is a total anthem too. Totally addictive and hugely underrated! It's the highest track for three of the four artists involved, with Charli XCX surprisingly guaranteeing herself one song in the top 10.

Yes, that's right, four Why Don't We songs in the top 10 - that's a record for any artist, beating The Vamps who had three songs in 2014's top 10. Can any of them make it to the top though? The Vamps occupied spots #5, #9 and #10 in 2014 so it's all but guaranteed...

10 Alec Benjamin - Let Me Down Slowly | 1-2-2-7-14-8-8-12-19-29-36-36-39-x-12-26-… (15+ non-consecutive weeks)

It's quite interesting that I'm talking about this song now, because only today it entered the UK chart for the first time, at #81. It's on the two most notable Spotify playlists: Hot Hits UK and Today's Top Hits. Perhaps Alec Benjamin is onto his very first global hit? I think it's a possibility, and there's certainly a lot of love for him. First of all though, let's take it back to last May. Let Me Down Slowly premiered towards the end of the month, and while I was intrigued by new Alec, I didn't have expectations as high as this. Let Me Down Slowly blew me away instantly with the slow build of the production, and the delicacy of his vocals over the top. Instantly, I knew this was Alec's most commercial track to date, and although he was unsigned at the time, it had clear potential.

There was no question about its #1 debut in my chart a week later, following a week of playing it on repeat thanks to half term. It only grew and grew, especially as further singles came and provided numerous opportunities to revisit my favourite Alec song. The mixtape/album Narrated for You's release propelled it back into my chart, at #12, and it's re-entered again in January 2019 thanks to the remix with Alessia Cara. What's more is that this song just doesn't get old. I still adore it as much as I always did, and if it does actually go on to smash, it will be a moment that fills me with pride and delight because it's one of the most worthy tracks and artists around.

9 Why Don't We - Talk | 1-3-4-10-12-12-14-18-13-12-16-20-25-29-34-30-21-28-34-40-x (20 weeks)

Finally, we lose the first of four Why Don't We songs in the top 40! All four of them place inside the top 10, which as I've said before, is a record for my EOY. No artist has dominated the top end of my EOY quite as much as these boys, and you'll be reading quite a bit more about them as they have three further tracks still to feature. First up though is Talk, the third of their four #1s in 2018. The track was announced with less than 24 hours notice, popping up on iTunes at midnight local time on Friday midnight, and it became the boys' first US iTunes #1 - a place they'd see again with latest single BIG PLANS (see next year's EOY lol x). My first impression was positive - it was more of a breezy, pure pop song than previous track Hooked, but it added a brilliant touch of versatility to the album. Jonah serves some excellent lead vocals on the chorus too, both Talk and Hooked providing a nice switch-up from the usual Zach chorus (although he always does them very well).

Of course, it debuted at #1 in my own chart, knocking Jonas Blue's Rise from the top spot and holding off new entries from Lil Xan (Lies) and Electric Pineapple & Ryan Lawrie (Stay). I loved it from first listen, perhaps not as much as Hooked (which still figures, it's not popped up yet after all). It spent a sole week at the top before Lil Xan's Moonlight dethroned it after his concert impact, with In Real Life's Tonight Belongs to You new at #2. It had quite a quick slide out of the top 10 actually, spending only four weeks there (Hooked spent 4 weeks at #1 alone), but it more than made up for it with its longevity in the rest of the chart, its final tally of 20 weeks making it one of the longest runners of the year, and one of the only tracks to reach the incredibly impressive 20 week mark in 2018.

8 Troye Sivan - My My My! | 2-1-1-1-2-7-9-12-15-18-22-22-30-34-x-32-x (15 non-consecutive weeks)

This song had a lot to live up to. I hadn't been this excited for a song's release since Harry Styles' Sign of the Times, so it's safe to say I had very high expectations for Troye Sivan's My My My!, his first single as a lead in two years. I've spoken in great detail about how much I love Blue Neighbourhood, so naturally whatever came next would have all of my attention. Honestly, Troye probably could have put out anything and I'd have loved it at that time, but I was slightly worried he'd disappoint. However, I didn't need to worry, as My My My! proved itself to be an incredibly instant smash hit in my eyes.

I watched the song for the first time in my bed as soon as I woke up, and I was all over it from first listen. The song is effortlessly stylish and brilliant, Troye's vocals tuned in perfectly to the production which is modern yet not remotely copycat. The video is superb too, seeing Troye express himself so openly and freely is inspirational and perfect for the vibe of the song. It became a #2 hit in my chart just one day after release, behind Liam Payne & Rita Ora's For You (which had the full week), before climbing to #1 in its first full week and spending three weeks there in total. It also became his second UK top 40, and first as a lead, which delighted me. Possibly my favourite chart show moment of the whole year. OK, it didn't quite turn Troye into the big name I really wanted it to, but becoming his biggest hit yet was absolutely nothing to be sniffed at.

7 Lil Xan & Charli XCX - Moonlight | 7-3-10-14-25-24-29-22-18-4-6-1-2-5-11-13-16-15-20-24-27-32-38-x (23 weeks)

One of the biggest slow-burners of the year, Lil Xan's Moonlight saw the first time a male rapper had reached #1 as a lead artist in over 5 years. Devlin's Rewind, in early 2013, was the only previous track to do so, and even then I think it's fair to say that was boosted almost entirely by Diane Birch's chorus (and its similarities to Alyssa Reid's Alone Again). Sure, Charli XCX features on this track, but her part isn't significant enough to boost the rest without me enjoying it as a whole. Moonlight is therefore a pretty unique case, especially as we all know I'm not exactly one for male rappers, but as I've said many times already in this thread, Lil Xan seems to defy expectations in my chart. Moonlight was his first chart-topper altogether, reaching the top in its second top 10 stint, initially impacting as an album track before being revived by the release of its music video and eventually hitting #1 after I saw him live.

So what does the track have going for it? Lyrically, you can never really expect much from Lil Xan, but the production is pretty solid and the chorus is exceptionally catchy - something he's actually pretty damn good at. He and Charli sound really good together, and overall it's a very catchy, addictive track that was quite comfortably the best on his TOTAL XANARCHY album. It's the first time a male rapper has ever been in my EOY top 10 as a lead artist (and even then, only Big Sean, Pitbull, Sean Paul, Tinie Tempah and Ty Dolla $ign have made it as a feature), and it's Charli XCX's first EOY top 10 appearance since her 2014 EOY #1 hit with Iggy Azalea on Fancy. Interestingly, Iggy's the only other rapper to make the EOY top 10 as a lead, and she did it three times - Work in 2013, Fancy in 2014 and Trouble in 2015!
