December 29, 20186 yr I know, and is that all they said, no top 10 rundown? They pre-record the show so Clara and Fearne just said "this is your new year #1" and Ava's music video was played. No top 10 rundown, they haven't done that in recent years at least I'm quite sure.
December 29, 20186 yr It was just the #1. EDIT: Joseph beat me to it :P Edited December 29, 20186 yr by WhovilleOdyssey
December 29, 20186 yr Shock horror the general public think a load of xmas songs in the top 10 is laughable and TOTP dont want to do a count down of 9 xmas songs in a top 10 on Dec 29th. I think this forum might be the only people who want xmas songs in the charts.

I think this forum might be the only people who want xmas songs in the charts. TOTP didn't count down the Christmas top 10 either, featuring only two Christmas songs when they were more relevant, so it's absolutely *nothing* to do with the Christmas takeover. The general public put them there so they only have themselves to blame.

I'm not a massive fan of the Christmas songs clogging the chart, but the fact you think the general public care enough either way is laughable.

December 29, 20186 yr maybe you should think, then post :) lol half of the planet has been only streaming xmas songs for there last two months Doesn't mean they want them in the chart or even know it will put them in the chart. When drunk Sandra say Alexa play Christmas music she has no idea the currated playlist she is listening to will contribute towards the chart. She is basically saying 'Alexa play Christmas radio'.

When drunk Sandra say Alexa play Christmas music she has no idea the currated playlist she is listening to will contribute towards the chart. She is basically saying 'Alexa play Christmas radio'. This isn't relevant though, it DOES count to the chart and it's the public who creates the chart. Whether drunk Sandra has any idea she's contributing to the chart isn't important because it does.

None of these people you speak of care about what’s in the chart. The people who care are all posting here and most of them don’t care about Christmas songs being in the chart. It’s pretty much just you getting your knickers in a twist.

Music Week mentioned a few months back that after the last refresh of the rules in July (new ratio rules) that the OCC would be reviewing how the rules operate and two things that the industry were pushing for were being considered: 1. the ratio of streams to sales for curated playlists 2. that old chestnut - including radio airplay. It came close to happening back in 1992 when phsyical sales were in freefall (over the next 7 years they then increased to very high levels) but back then the industry decided to keep the chart as a pure sales chart. Now that streams are included - they are not sales whatever the OCC might try to have us believe - there is a belief that radio airplay isn't that much different and that there is a case for it being included. Will it ever happen? It looks a strong possibility that it might in the next couple of years though personally I think it would make the chart even more stale than it usually is as many radio station groups now have country wide networking and just play the same old songs for months on end.

Thanks for the interesting and rational response unlike certain others. The radio thing is interesting because I feel Katy Perry has basically charted this xmas on 'radio' play. I cant imagine many were seeking out her Amazon exclusive xmas song but it was pushed and thrust on them unwittingly. I know many on here cant see past 'Mariah was robbed of number 1' but the charts are at a point now where they are becoming a radio chart influenced one but its disguised as playlists. I think it is make or break right now, if people really want Katy Perry charting because of the deal she made or 35 xmas songs in the top 40 then we might as well scrap the chart and have a radio chart. Especially with downloads about to die out completely. So many of those xmas song streams were glorified radio plays. Edited December 29, 20186 yr by sammy01
December 29, 20186 yr I don't think I know anybody in real life who knows or cares about what is the charts. They could probably tell me who is on the Radio 2 Playlist though.

Exactly the christmas number 1 xame up in conversation within my family and it was both supposedly a big deal that simon cowel or x factor havent got it. Yet they havent for 4 years or even been a threat or near it for the last 3. Also there was much suprise that the chart isnt on sunday anymore yet its been 2 years almost on fridays. Basically the average person has no clue. If the charts were a radio airplay i feel that we would probably hav4 more diversity

I don't think anyone outside the chart fans community takes any notice of the Billboard chart and it hasn't had a syndicated radio programme in the US counting down it for two and a half decades. To most people it is simply invisible. Radio 1 has been good enough to stick by the UK Singles chart but I do wonder how much longer they will continue to stick with it. Few people seem to have an interest in what is in the chart, something that has been the case for many years now. The Christmas number 1 did generate some interest in the media but it wasn't as prominent in the news programmes as it once would have been. Edited December 30, 20186 yr by Robbie
