Chart Commentary

 

 

Dethroning Rita Ora after just a week, Mariah Carey claims this week's #1 with All I Want For Christmas Is You, up 19 places thanks to December's arrival. This is groundbreaking for my chart for a number of reasons. Firstly, the track becomes Mariah's very first #1, after she appeared in my very first chart (interestingly, with an alternate version of this same track, with added Justin Bieber...!). She has never placed higher than #3 before, which All I Want For Christmas Is You had achieved on four previous occasions, as well as Infinity in 2015. The track reaches #1 on its 27th week - a new record. Although those weeks are not consecutive, the previous record wasn't either - Cody Simpson's Wish U Were Here took 21 weeks to make #1, not taking into account a gap in between where it wasn't charting. It's in the top 10 for a record-extending sixth stint, pushing ahead of Manel Navarro's four stints with Do It For Your Lover throughout 2017. All I Want For Christmas Is You is also by far the oldest song to make #1 in my chart, having first been released in 1994.

 

Another achievement for All I Want For Christmas Is You is that it's the first EVER festive song to top my chart. It was already the highest charting Christmas track, but is part of an exclusive club of only five other top 10 Christmas hits, one of which reaches a new peak this week (Matteo Markus Bok's This Christmas zooms 14-6 to outdo its #8 peak from three weeks ago). Ulrik Munther's Shine a Light achieves a new peak of #17 also, one place higher than its #18 peak last year, while Kylie Minogue and Mary J. Blige re-enter with seasonal hits too.

This week's highest new entry goes to Gryffin, an American DJ. He made his debut this summer, when Tie Me Down, a collaboration with Elley Duhé, made it to #3. Now he's back with Bye Bye, which instantly goes one step higher and debuts at #2. The song features Ivy Adara on vocals, who scores her first hit.

 

Dalton Harris also scores his first entry this week, with one of two James Arthur collaborations to chart this week (alongside Rewrite the Stars with Anne-Marie). James now triples his total number of hits, with Say You Won't Let Go being his only previous hit - both songs outpeak the #38 high that achieved.

Nice festive Number 1, looking at that chart run it's bizarre it's only just made #1 for the first time! Why this year as opposed to previous years?

 

Good to see that 'Only Want You' got to #1 too, what an absolute tune, I'm looking forward to hearing that on the radio in the new year, assuming it's still being lined up as the next single. I'm still pretty obsessed with 'Let You Love Me' tbh though :D

 

Loving that Ronson/Miley song too, it's such a breath of fresh air amongst all the samey-sounding chart stuff at the moment. I hope it gets to #1, and I hope it does it for Christmas week because I put a bet on at 14-1 for it to be Christmas number 1 (sadly I know it's got very little chance but I can hope!)
