December 24, 20186 yr Author Well deserved for George Ezra! Olly Murs, Little Mix please. 134.5k, 149,777 I agree Kylie is a great album but in the last five years I’ve become a lot less interested in the charts and music. I watch TOTP from 1980s and there is so many great tracks out but now I’m lucky to like 3-4 singles in the T40. Maybe it’s a sign of getting older but I generally feel music isn’t as good as it used to be! That is a classic sign of getting older. :P
December 24, 20186 yr Author It really has been the year of the soundtrack. Ed aside though only George has done enough to go platinum this year artist wise is fairly poor IMO calling something a 'motion picture soundtrack album' is a bit of a cheat to get it on the main chart, as it is a multi-artist compilation in all but name...
December 24, 20186 yr Paul -- Thank you for doing these Weekly UK Album Totals Up-Dates. They really are much appreciated. I - and others - look forward to seeing your Weekly Up-Dates in 2019.
December 24, 20186 yr I think the big issue with Streaming is as people arent investing money directly into artists they feel no loyalty or are even fans of artists these days. I think it will become ever increasingly harder for any artist to become a new superstar or legend as they will just struggle to actually build a fanbase. The prime example of this is Jess Glynne, with the 7 numbers 1s and 2 number 1 albums she should be an adored artists boarding on legendary. Yet I'd say a lot of people who listen to some of her songs wouldn't even class themselves as a fan and wouldn't actively invest money in her or listen to her if it wasnt free. Its telling Jess is supporting the Spice Girls on a stadium tour, a band whose last studio album was 18 years ago. You would think it would be the other way round but music being so disposable now is leading to everyone being a casual fan of everything. This reflects entirely in the album chart where the only big album this year is a movie that has evidently caught on and has made itself a big fans base of people that are willing to invest money into the film, be it soundtrack, DVD or cinema tickets. December 24, 20186 yr the problem I see with streaming albums is that a lot of people are switching from CDs to Spotify but then if you stream a new album in week 1 you do it 5-6 times a week, no more, so you're giving it like 0.05 sales or something, you're never gonna give it a full sale isn't it like you have to stream an album 85 times to give it 1 sale?
December 24, 20186 yr Author Is Cher top 65? yes please :) Barely even top 95 : 64k Edited December 24, 20186 yr by vidsanta

I intend to continue them for now, but due to my ongoing health issues, including declining eyesight, I can't guarantee they will continue throughout the year.
December 24, 20186 yr I think more younger people are generally into streaming. Middle aged and older people tend to prefer buying the physical product. Most music these days is aimed at the younger market though but older artists like Kylie tend to sell more of physical albums than streams due to demographic population of fans largely being older.

December 25, 20186 yr Thanks for the info - it doesn't feel right with Cher not being top 65, but at least she still is in the official chart! AND she should pass 65k this week at least. Edited December 25, 20186 yr by Rosemerry 🤶🎁🎄

December 25, 20186 yr People who started with streaming in 2008 (when Spotify was launched) are middle-aged now or in few years time. And they are still streaming.
December 25, 20186 yr More important thing is that young people have, and always have had, more time to consume music so they will remain the #1 demography for the industry. Edited December 25, 20186 yr by SKOB
