April 2, 200619 yr ARIA Chart Commentary thanks to Gavin Ryan http://www.musicworldonline.com.au/ A New No.1 single in Australia this week, in the form of Youth Groups "Forever Young", and this is the first time since January 1997 that an Aussie groups has knocked off an Aussie group from the top of the charts. The last time this happened was back in January 1997 when "To the Moon and Back" by Savage Garden was knocked off by "Freak" from Silverchair. The last song to hit No.1 in Australia with the word 'Forever' in the title was "Strawberry Fields Forever" by The Beatles this very week (1-April) in 1967 (39 years ago), and the last song to hit No.1 with the word 'Young' in the titles was "Too Young to Be Married" by the Hollies from June 1971. It's also the first time ever that and "F" worded song has knocked off another "F" worded song from the No.1 spot. It happens quite regularly with popular letters, the last being "My Humps" being knocked off by "Maybe Tonight" in December 2005. This is the 909th No.1 single on the Australian charts, the 133rd Australian No.1, and the 86th Performed Australian single. The last time a cover version performed by an Australian went to No.1 was in March 2005 when Anthony Callea's version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" was at the top. Ivy Records (home of TV Rock) has only ever had one other single hit the ARIA Top 50, that was Neon with their single "A Man" back in November 2004, which made it to No.48. So dropping down to No.2 is "Flaunt it" by TV Rock feat Seany B, having spent four weeks at the top spot, which has now equalled the four week run of the last long running Australian Performed Dance single, way back in September 2001 when Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out of My Head" spent four weeks at the top of the charts. Also it gives two Aussie acts a four week run at the Top 2 spots, the last time such a feat happened was back in August 2004 when the participants included Cosima, Freestylers, Paulini and Missy Higgins. The highest new entry comes in at No.3, "Beep" by The Pussycat Dolls feat Will.i.am and it gives the girls their third Top 3 single. Their first single "Don't Cha" was No.1 for 7 non-consecutive weeks from August to October 2005, and that was followed by their second single "Stickwitu" which reached No.2 in January 2006. The song "Beep" debuted and peaked at No.2 in the U.K. the week of March 5th, and this is the first time a sound has made the charts as a single, as they don't say Beep in the lyrics, but only make the sound. It also features guest rapper Will.i.am from The Black Eyed Peas. Three songs in the Top 10 make their highest peaks this week. At No.4 "You Raise Me Up" by Westlife moves up a spot to give them their highest charting single in Australia. And at No.7 The Veronicas' third single "When it All Falls Apart" equals the peak of this week's No.40 single, "Everything I'm Not", their second single. And thirdly Kate Alexa has her highest charting and first Top 10 single, as "All I Hear" moves from three weeks at No.13 up to No.9. Mention must also go to "Goodbye My Lover" which is spending it's 16th week in the Top 10, two week's more than his first single "You're Beautiful" achieved, and his tour of Australia has been announced for the end of April 2006. Next of four new entries comes in at No.13 "Grillz" by Nelly feat. Paul Wall, Ali and Gipp. He's also on the charts at No.15 this week as a featured vocalist on "Nasty Girl" with Notorious B.I.G. and others. This is the sixth single from his album's "Sweat" / "Suit". This track is from the combination of both albums "SweatSuit", and was an added track that was not on either the original albums. It's the 14th Australian Top 40 hit for Nelly, including his guest appearances on others' tracks. This is also a former U.S. No.1 single, and it's at No.14 on this weeks Billboard charts. Last week I also mentioned about the strange chart run for this week's No.15 single "Nasty Girl" by Notorious B.I.G. feat Jagged Edge, Nelly, Diddy & Avery Storm. Well this week it's has still only appeared at two different positions on the chart: 15 and 17, it's chart run has been - 17-15-17-15-17-17-15. Recently new Australian resident (not permanently yet), Leo Sayer comes in at No.20 as a featured vocalist on one of his 70's hits "Thunder in My Heart Again" by Meck feat. Leo Sayer. This is Leo's 14th Australian Top 40 single, and his 24th Top 100 single, and was originally a No.11 hit in late November 1977, which means it was a higher placed hit in Australian than it's No.22 U.K. peak position. He was last on the charts as the featured vocalist with the group Groove Generation in 1998, when they covered his song "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing". His last Top 40 hit was the No.17 1983 single "Orchard Road". This song hit No.1 in the U.K. for 2 weeks from the 12th of February, and Meck's real name is Craig Dimech. It was an old copy of this single that DJ Meck found in a second hand record shop in LA last year and the producer swiftly added some updated beats . Final new entry to the Top 50 charts is another remake/remix of a classic song. At No.31 is "Sunshine of Your Love" by Cream vs The Hoxtons. The original by Cream hit No.18, this very week in late March 1968 (38 years ago), and this was Cream's third charting single out of seven in total for Australia, their biggest being the No.1 from January 1969 hit "White Room". For the second week, "Both Sides of the Gun" by Ben Harper is at No.1 on the albums chart. Not much of the Top 10 Albums moves around this week, as the highest new entries are not until the Top 20. Thus the highest new entry comes in at No.18, with Prince's new album "3121". His last studio album was the May 2004 No.15 set "Musicology". This album features the great new single "Black Sweat". Right behind Prince is the Greatest Hits collection from Massive Attack. "Collected" debuts at No.19, and their best performing album was the No.1 "Mezzanine" from May 1998. As he was meant to be touring with U2, but those shows were put on hold, Kanye West still made a trip to Australia for some shows, and the result sees his album "Late Registration" move from 35 to 14, giving the album a new highest peak position, as it had originally only reached No.16. Coming in at No.39 is the new album for Olivia Newton-John, "Stronger Than Before", and a totally different performer than Olivia, Rob Zombie comes in at No.44 with his latest album "Educated Horses".
