Chart Commentary

 

 

Claiming his fourth #1 in as many months, Italian popstar Matteo Markus Bok continues his domination of the top 10 with new single Mrs Lonely. Debuting this time last year with Just One Lie, Matteo benefited from a quiet period of the chart and dropped quickly when new releases started to arrive in January. Although it's not re-entered (yet), it's fair to say Just One Lie has had a new lease of life thanks to everything that's happened since. El Ritmo (AHI AHI AHI) became his first #1 single in September, and In the Middle followed less than two months later, holding the top spot for four weeks. Since then, Matteo's soared to #2 with This Christmas (a peak it holds this week), sent his Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper cover Shallow to #1, and now Mrs Lonely joins the set. It's an impressive takeover, especially when you consider he has four songs in the top 10. He ties two records this week - most songs in the top 10 in a single week (achieved by Girls Aloud in 2012, and CNCO and Alec Benjamin in 2018), and most #1 hits in a calendar year (tying One Direction in 2012, Hunter Hayes in 2014, The Vamps in 2017, and Rita Ora and Why Don't We in 2018).

 

This Christmas still leads the way with Christmas songs, which make their final appearances for this year this week. Matteo and Mariah have the only two in this week's top 10, but despite many dropping, they haven't sunk very far. Katy Perry's Cozy Little Christmas is up 37-25, while Why Don't We's Kiss You This Christmas climbs 40-34.

Managing an impressive top 5 debut even with Christmas songs impacting, 5 Seconds of Summer enter at #5 with new single Lie to Me. It's the fourth single from their Youngblood album, which has seen the Australian band achieve their first #1 in my chart with Want You Back, and a top 10 hit from the global smash title track (#8). However, third single Valentine missed the mark significantly, becoming their lowest charting single at only #36. Lie to Me returns them to form, seeing them back into the top 5 and giving them an eleventh top 10 hit. It's also the fifth top 10 hit for featured artist Julia Michaels, who has been added to the new version of the track released last Friday (21st), and her highest position since her feature on Clean Bandit's I Miss You just over a year ago.

Aydan is an Australian popstar, who has recently been announced as a contestant in their Eurovision national selection for 2019. His debut top 10 hit Something About You was released after he finished fourth on The Voice Australia, and it zooms up 15 places to #10. James Arthur also achieves a new peak this week, while Max & Harvey and Now United chart for the first time, and JoJo's 2006 classic Too Little, Too Late enters at #36 following the 2018 version's release.
