Simona Halep claimed her fourth successive win over Venus Williams to reach the Miami Open quarter-finals.

 

The Romanian third seed hit 21 winners as she beat Williams 6-3 6-3 and now faces China's Qiang Wang, who defeated compatriot Yafan Wang 7-5 6-4.

 

Either Halep or Petra Kvitova could replace Naomi Osaka as world number one at the end of the tournament.

Former world number one Victoria Azarenka reached her first singles final in three years by defeating top seed Angelique Kerber at the Monterrey Open.

 

The Belarusian beat Kerber - another former world number one - 6-4 4-6 6-1.

British number one Kyle Edmund let an early lead slip as he was beaten in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters by Diego Schwartzman.

 

World number 23 Edmund led Argentina's Schwartzman by a set and 3-0 but ultimately lost 4-6 6-3 6-1.

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal breezed into the Monte Carlo Masters quarter-finals, but Britain's Cameron Norrie could not progress from the last 16.

 

Top seed Djokovic, 31, needed just one hour and eight minutes to win 6-3 6-0 against American Taylor Fritz.

 

Second seed Nadal eased past Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov in a 6-4 6-1 win on the clay - having now won 23 consecutive sets at the Masters 1000 tournament.

 

Norrie lost 6-2 7-5 to Italian Lorenzo Sonego, ranked 40 places below him.

 

The British number two, who is set to rise into the top 50 next week, was broken four times and struggled to test Sonego's serve.

Rafael Nadal suffered a shock 6-4 6-2 defeat by Italian Fabio Fognini in the semi-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters.

 

The 32-year-old Spaniard, seeking his 12th Monte Carlo title, had won his past 18 matches at the event and lost only four of 76 in his career.

 

World number 18 Fognini, 31, will face Serb Dusan Lajovic in Sunday's final.

The GB womens team are through to the World Group of the Fed Cup for the first time since 1993. That was a great effort by Johanna Konta and Katie Boulter over the weekend.

The 23-year-old, who climbed to 45th in the latest ATP world rankings, lost serve at the start of both sets before losing the final three games.

Rafael Nadal moved a step closer to setting an ATP record as he eased into the semi-finals of the Barcelona Open with a straight-set victory over Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff.

 

Nadal, 32, is bidding to become the first player to win the same event 12 times and breezed through this quarter-final match, winning 7-5 7-5.

 

The former world number one will next face 2017 finalist Dominic Thiem.
