Kyle Edmund lost in straight sets to big-serving American Taylor Fritz in the semi-finals of the Nature Valley International at Eastbourne.

 

Third seed Edmund had four set points in the first set but failed to take them and lost 7-6 (10-8) 6-3.

 

The 24-year-old was bidding to reach his first final since winning the European Open in October.

 

Fritz, 21, will face Sam Querrey after his fellow American overcame Italy's Thomas Fabbiano 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 6-3.

Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans both won at the Atlanta Open on Wednesday to reach the quarter-finals.

 

Norrie, 23, enjoyed a straight-sets victory over South Korea's Kwon Soon-woo, with the British number two beating the world number 117 6-3 6-4.

 

Evans, ranked one place below Norrie at 55, then triumphed in a hard-fought match with world number 42 Radu Albot.

 

The 29-year-old, who reached the third round at Wimbledon this month, beat the Moldovan 7-6 (7-5) 5-7 6-2.

Coco Gauff returned to court for the first time since her memorable Wimbledon run with a win in Washington Open qualifying.

 

The 15-year-old, who beat Venus Williams on her way to the last 16 at the All England Club, won 6-4 6-2 against fellow American Maegan Manasse.

 

Gauff will next play either eighth seed Hiroko Kuwata of Japan or fellow American Maria Sanchez.

Britain's former world number one has been playing doubles since June as he regains fitness after hip surgery.

 

Murray, 32, broke down in tears at the Australian Open in January, believing the resurfacing operation he had later that month could end his career.

 

Now the Scot is pain-free and feels the time is right to return to singles.

 

Murray's last singles match was a five-set loss to Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut in the first round in Melbourne.

Coco Gauff has been awarded a wildcard for the women's singles at the US Open this month.

 

Gauff, 15, became the youngest player in the Open era to qualify for the main draw at Wimbledon, beating former world number one Venus Williams en route to the fourth round.

 

The 2011 champion Sam Stosur will join Gauff in the main draw at the US Open after also accepting a wildcard.

In the second meeting of the Scottish brothers' careers, Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski beat Andy Murray and Feliciano Lopez won 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 10-4.
