Records are broken on both single & album chart this week. For the singles chart, "Shallow" returns to #1, 16 weeks after it was last at #1. This is by far the longest gap between #1 sequences as the previous record is Gabriella Cilmi's "Sweet About Me" having #1 runs 5 weeks apart. Mind you it could be a short lived record of Mariah Carey being at #1 turns into an annual Christmas tradition. Even though the Academy Awards were over two weeks ago, it looks like "Shallow" should retain the #1 spot next week. The bourgeois download hegemony looks to maintain a stranglehold on the charts a bit longer as Ariana's Spotify top 2 aren't really able to compete. In fact it looks like she'll be overtaken by another competitor as the Jonas Brothers new single is showing very strongly on both formats. Their highest charting single before this was "Burning Up" which got to #31. Nick Jonas got to #15 with "Jealous" and Joe Jonas got to #6 with "Cake By The Ocean" so it's a new record by any measurement. It's near impossible for Australian songs to reach the top 10 unless they're an international hit or just placed strongly in the Hottest 100, so the combination of a new album out and supporting Eminem on tour can only get Hilltop Hoods to #11 with "Leave Me Lonely", though this is its first week as the highest Australian single in the chart. It places just ahead of P!nk who debuts at #12 thanks primarily to downloads. It's an inauspicious start for her but she is #1 on iTunes again so many she's got brighter prospects ahead. ARIA continue to ignore both up and coming US rappers and NZ indie pop artists who start with B and end with E so the only other top 50 debut this week is from Hilltop Hoods with the 3rd single from their new album. It features Illy who is tied with Hilltop Hoods as they have the only 2 Australian hip hop songs to get as high as #2 on the singles chart. It also features Ecca Vandal who has never made the ARIA Chart in any capacity (I think her debut album got to about #200 but don't quote me on that). She once retweeted me when she debuted at #1 on my multi-chart equivalent for another music forum. Lower down, possibly because Hot Hits Australia will support anything with Julia Michaels' name on it, James Bay gets his first chart entry in many years, as nothing from his 2nd album made the charts here. Fellow UK chart star Mabel also gets her first entry which looks to climb quite a bit next week.

The other record broken this week also relates to the #1 position. Hilltop Hoods debut at #1 with relative ease. While I thought "A Star Is Born" might have challenged, they ended up selling close to 3 times more than their closest competitor. Hilltop Hoods scored their first #1 album back in 2006 and this is now their 6th #1 album, which is the most for any Australian group. Previously they were tied with Silverchair and Powderfinger on 5 (who both disbanded before ending their #1 streak so one can only speculate how many more they might have had in them). Now only Jimmy Barnes, John Farnham & The 12th Man have more than the South Australian trio. The top 10 continues to be clogged up with the same soundtrack albums that have been there for the past 4 months, but there has been space for new entries. First is another Australian, with the lovely Julia Jacklin's 2nd album taking her all the way up to #8, a considerable jump from her first album which peaked at #42. Long enduring prog rock stalwarts Dream Theater also return, scoring their 2nd top 10 album, the last one also having peaked at #10. Offset's solo outing debuts higher than the last Migos album did because ARIA didn't count its week 1 streams, but Quavo landed slightly higher at #16. Next week is a bit harder to call but Hozier should do decently with his new album, and there could be the return of several albums by The Prodigy.

The curiosity of the charts is that since it's effectively an aggregate of 7 days of activity, published 2 days after the fact, it will often feel like it's perpetually behind the times that it supposedly represents. I'm writing this post about 16 days after the Academy Awards aired but because that only covered half of last week's chart, the lagging effect into this week's chart spread across a whole week balances out to being roughly the same as last week. This means that not only does "Shallow" retain the #1 spot, but most Queen & Lady Gaga tracks are steady if not climbing. Then again, because iTunes users be like that, "Shallow" was #1 on iTunes as recently as last night. It's tanking hard on streams so this should be its last week at #1. Replacing it will probably be the new Spotify #1, "Sucker" which as noted last week has instantly become the highest charting song of the Jonas variety that isn't a tropical house cover of a Tracy Chapman song. The only other action in the top 10 is that Khalid has gotten a little higher with "Talk", however since it's been in the chart for a month, it's old news and is getting shoved back on Spotify so they can push his newer single. There are big singles from Blueface & YNW Melly which are climbing fast which means nothing is happening on this week's chart. Benny Blanco & Juice WRLD do both score their 2nd top 50 hits (at least credited in the former's case).

Something of a surprise to me on the album chart. Despite her usual tendency to struggle with longevity at the very pointy end of the chart, Ariana Grande has managed to return for a 3rd week at #1 for "thank u, next", which means that it alone accounts for half of her time spent at #1 on the album chart. It's also relatively surprising as Hilltop Hoods usually last 2 weeks at #1 with their albums. Because soundtrack monotony never ends, the only interesting thing otherwise to note in the top 10 is a debut for Hozier at #8. His previous album ended up climbing to #3 off the back of actually having some charting hits though he's not yet managed to do that this time around. The next highest debut comes from Pond who you may mostly know for being an offshoot of Tame Impala. Debuting at #15 gives them their equal highest chart peak to date. Managing to improve peaks is Solange whose last album hit #21, but this time she gets slightly higher at #17. Next week could be quite busy but I'm not sure the #1 spot will be challenged by Dido, Kerser, Foals, Juice WRLD, Stella Donnelly or Maren Morris. Though two of them have had #1 albums before so you never know.

In the US, the Jonas Brothers dropped from #1 to #5 this week, but in Australia they've done the complete opposite. "Sucker" is safely leading on streaming currently so it looks to be sticking around there for a while. I'm also obliged to mention that this is their first #1 hit and now Nick Jonas has more ARIA #1 hits than Jess Glynne which might please some people. Behind it, through everything else falling faster, Post Malone gets a new peak of #2 for "Wow.", which is his 3rd #2 peaker now after "I Fall Apart" and "Better Now". The remix is also helping it now so it might be stuck at #2 in typical Post Malone fashion. The only other new peak in the top 10 is from Dominic Fike and "3 Nights". Dominic is a former felon who went to jail for reasons I haven't figured out yet, but I assume since the song isn't hip hop, that's easy to ignore. Billie Eilish has another big surge with "wish you were gay"'s first full tracking week, though it doesn't reach the top 10, and it does so at the expense of "bury a friend" which had its playlist support neutered to shift onto the newer song, which doesn't seem to be connecting the same way. Because it's the charts in 2019, there's a Khalid song again with "My Bad" at #30 which looks to climb quickly next week thanks to strong streaming. The charts are also almost certainly trolling me as well, because while NZ singer Bene made one of my favourite songs of last year which should be in the top 50 but isn't, my decision to make fun of NZ band Drax Project's "Woke Up Late" on Twitter when it came out in late 2017 seems to mean that it's never stopped haunting me ever since, and now thanks to the Hailee Steinfeld version, it's a top 40 hit now. DJ Mustard gets his first credited entry in years with "Pure Water" which sneaks in thanks to an increasing amount of missing songs on the chart. The latest news is that with Juice WRLD's album release, "Hear Me Calling" debuted just outside of the top 50, but "Fast" which should be in the top 50 has been ignored completely. It's especially ridiculous considering that "Robbery" had its playlist placement completely sabotaged to fit this song, and so instead of coming close to the top 20 this week, it's not even in the top 40. Charts in 2019. I'm also inclined to mention that because of Marshmello, CHVRCHES are back on the chart, and "Here With Me" actually matches "Leave A Trace"'s #64 peak, which is their highest charting single until next week. They also charted with "Recover" and "Dead Air".

The album chart is in total doldrums and we might be seeing record lows in terms of chart sales at #1. Ariana Grande manages to get a 4th week at #1 which increasingly looks like it'll be her last as she might finally succumb to the soundtrack hegemony. Depending on your disposition, she might have done just enough as she only barely holds off Kerser from getting his first #1 album, although I've seen fans claim he's had 4 (now 5) #1 albums because they got to #1 on iTunes, doctrine which I imagine he spread because there's no way fans came up with that on their own accord. Anyway, Kerser usually follows the tradition of Susan Boyle & Call Of Duty by releasing a new album every year in November, but this time he took a few more months which rewards him with his highest charting album to date. He's had 6 top 10 albums but previously got as high as #4. While I was remarking on Juice WRLD errors in the singles chart, it just now occurred to me that his previous album "Goodbye & Good Riddance" never cracked the ARIA top 100. It reached the top 20 in New Zealand so one can only assume more ARIA shenanigans. This time he's counted correctly and scores his first top 10 album with "Death Race For Love" at #8. In doing so he's kept out Foals who only manage a #11 debut. Thanks in part to a release week discount (I'm pretty sure it's why I bought it at the time), Foals previously hit #1 with "Holy Fire" despite having never made the top 50 before, but it seems to be downhill from there. Dido has also understandably been on a downward trend but that's mainly because of how monstrously huge her first two albums are. So her 5th album is her lowest charter to date, but only a couple spots lower than her 2013 album. Just behind her is Stella Donnelly with her debut album at #15. I swear I don't always sing praises of Western Australian artists (maybe I'll prove that next week), but she is another delight from this empty side of the country. I have no idea what to expect next week except maybe even lower sales because the big new releases from Dean Lewis & Billie Eilish aren't here yet. Jack Savoretti was #1 on iTunes earlier this week but I don't know if he can be relied upon for strong figures beyond that. If Tame Impala had a new album out instead though that would be a done deal obviously.

In one of the heated weeks on the chart, Jonas Brothers hold a 2nd week at #1 with dipping sales & streams. Post Malone is their toughest competition at the moment but it's not clear what song that's with. In the latest bone-headed ARIA move, it seems that "Wow."'s remix and its roughly 200K streams were not counted, which has caused "Sunflower" to move back to #2 in its place. If the remix did count, "Wow." would be a serious #1 threat this coming week but accurate charts can be too much to ask for I guess. CHVRCHES and Mabel both score their first ever top 50 hits, to my dismay, the former is via Marshmello. To illustrate the streaming/digital divide, Birds of Tokyo debut at #56 with their latest single, which is currently #4 on the digital tracks chart, and they are of course a band I loved in my teens, and even a couple of years ago saw live and had a great time, though sadly they've lately devoted a lot of their craft to boring radio ballads. To make matters worse, the reason the song is doing so well is because it's on ads for Married At First Sight.

The album chart doldrums continue as Ariana Grande scores a 5th week at #1, in a similar manner to Linkin Park's long running #1 album in 2010 under similar circumstances. If you care more about healthy sales than quality, then hurrah because Dean Lewis will probably easily debut at #1 next week. The only real news is that recent tours push Eagles & Luke Combs into the top 10, overall probably uplifting news for people who think music made by dudes with guitars is exceptionally real.

Given that it is now a three time, three time, three time ARIA #1 single, it is pretty safe to say that Australia can dig that "Sucker". I have to do the Booker T bit now because I don't think it's getting another week. The ARIA Chart has been met with many major album splashes on the singles chart, but never any that net a #1 debut (I've often theorised that "Better Now" would have come very close with accurately recorded data even though it only debuted at #4). Speaking of Post Malone, he came pretty close to the top spot with "Wow." as it seems the remix is now counting to the chart. He might even overtake the Jonas Brothers, but it's looking like he'll be leapfrogged by Billie Eilish who is posting monster streaming numbers with the entirety of her new album, but particularly "bad guy" looks to take the top spot. Spare some sympathy for "bury a friend" whose #3 peak probably won't be improved due to the fact it isn't on Hot Hits Australia like all of its competition, and might not even reach #4. "wish you were gay" looks to score a new top 10 peak though, and maybe even "when the party's over" will return, while "you should see me in a crown" should easily surpass its original #47 peak. Also lots of debuts probably but that's always less certain so I won't go there. Sam Smith's perpetual quest for a top 5 peak is blocked yet again, this time by Dominic Fike who climbs to his probable peak of #5. Speaking of sneaking into milestones, Dean Murray scores his 2nd top 10 hit with "7 Minutes". It's always a rare case when an Australian single reaches the top 10 without the help of the Hottest 100. A random sales boost early in the week also helps Calvin Harris get to the top 20 for the first time with "Giant", whereas for the binman this is narrowly behind the #17 peak for "Human". After a brief stint of releasing a single that only kind of sounded the same as another popular song, Dean Lloyd has reverted back to 'I've heard of that before' territory with the week's highest debut "Stay Awake". To my shock, ARIA have taken a relatively prompt initiative on including Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" to the chart (though I suspect it should have been on there last week, by usual standards this is a triumph). In fact, ARIA's version of an April Fool's joke seems to be taking the chart almost seriously because they've also now belatedly included Juice WRLD's "Fast", but don't worry, the other usual suspects are still missing, and we can potentially add a new one to that list because Ski Mask The Slump God's "Faucet Failure" looks like it might have about enough streams to get in, guess I'll never know though.

According to last year's census data, Australia's population is roughly made up of 3.6% Chinese, 3.0% Aboriginal, 1.7% Indian and 5.3% Other, leaving roughly 90% firmly considered white. I don't know why I brought that up but it seems like Dean Lewis Capaldi's debut album has debuted at #1. Evidently it helps when there's not much in the way of competition as noted by Ariana Grande being #2 with continuing diminishing numbers off her debut. That being said, someone somewhere thought that there weren't enough soundtracks in the top 10, so not only have we retained all of those soundtrack associated albums from last week, we now add a 6th courtesy of Motley Crue's Netflix thing. Speaking of nostalgia, Bryan Adams has also been in the country recently, and his recent album which debuted at #21 has vaulted 69 (nice) places to #7. With all this, it means that Flume has just narrowly missed the top 10 with his rather adventurous and interesting new mixtape, which follows two #1 albums. Not far behind him is Melbourne band The Murlocs, whose last album hit #15, this time they're a little lower at #16. Next week Billie Eilish will assumably debut at #1 and I'm not sure if anything else noteworthy will happen.

Dean Lewis Capaldi?

I think that's only meant to be a pun on their names both containing 'Lewis' (and that they make similar music) :P

Surprised it took this long for Capaldi himself to make the Australian top 50 anyway, SYL seems like the type of song that would easily cross over there (and I'm guessing it has enough momentum to be a proper smash too based on that 62-46 climb).

Australia still really have a serious Post Malone obsession too it seems, 'Sunflower' still top 3 after all this time makes the chart look like Billboard. Good to see 'Giant' making the top 20 finally anyhow.

Yeah I was gonna mention it as it gets closer but "Sunflower" is 3 weeks away from the top 10 longevity record (and 2 weeks away for consecutive weeks), and still pretty high on sales and streams. "Shallow" is also up to 22 weeks but I expect Billie Eilish to push it out next week, but "Sunflower" should be safe.

With Australia being free from the menacing power of locals being local, we have a new #1 single courtesy of Billie Eilish. As I noted last week, with "bad guy" at #1 this is the first time a big album splash has resulted in a #1 debut. Prior to this week she had 3 top 10 hits to her name ("lovely", "when the party's over" and "bury a friend"). As of this week she has 7, with 6 of them being in the top 10. This is especially noteworthy because it's never been done before. In 2017 Ed Sheeran set a chart record when he had 5 songs simultaneously in the top 10 ("Shape Of You", "Castle On The Hill", "Galway Girl", "Dive" & "Perfect"). The power of a single sale has worked against Ed's favour as that is the margin which pushed "xanny" ahead of Khalid's "Talk" for #10. This is somewhat ironic because last year Ed Sheeran set a chart record when "Perfect" held onto #10 by 1 sale (confining Bazzi's "Mine" to a #11 peak) to score a 25th week in the top 10, which has still not been matched. It might be soon however because Post Malone & Swae Lee have held on for a 23rd week now with "Sunflower". I don't want to make any hasty assumptions because things can change rapidly, but it is still the 6th highest song on both Apple & Spotify so week 24 looks locked in at least. If you go down to the top 20, Billie Eilish has only matched Ed Sheeran's record of 9 (Michael Jackson managed 8 in 2009 but he also had #21 and #22 so he was quite close). Despite the Billie influx, Lil Nas X & Lewis Capaldi both manage 20+ place gains. The former may well climb to #2 next week with help from the remix. Given that ARIA credit Drake on "SICKO MODE" and J. Cole on "a lot", while not crediting Jack & Jack or "Rise" or brando on "Body", do not @ me about whether Billy Ray Cyrus will receive a credit.

Billie Eilish of course scores a #1 album this week with no remotely close competition. After becoming the first person born in the 21st century to score a top 10 single (and album...I think), she simultaneously becomes the first to score a #1 single and a #1 album. Hilltop Hoods rise back to #2 on the back of a vinyl release, which helps for a monumental week where there are no soundtracks in the top 4. The other high debuts this week are on the heavier end of the spectrum. I Prevail score their highest ever charting album at #6, having previously made #8. Devin Townsend merely matches his past performance with a 2nd #10 album. For a major throwback, The Black Sorrows mostly release a new album every 2 years but they haven't made the top 50 even in 25 years. Their 18th album enters at #11 which is their highest charting since their 6th album. Next week Billie Eilish will probably hold onto the #1 spot ahead of Khalid.

wow amazing for Billie Eilish even bigger than in the US
I can't believe a lead single from P!nk has missed the Top 10!

Billie Eilish rules both charts for a second week in a row. Obviously she sees declines across the board but her #1 entries were so far ahead of the pack that it doesn't matter. It will next week...or I suppose technically it won't because Lil Nas X is making colossal gains across the board with both versions of "Old Town Road", so next week he'll probably be doing more than Billie did last week and very handily land at #1. It was moderately Billie's partner in "lovely"'s week to shine however, though not to the same extent as her. Khalid's top 50 presence this week is limited to songs which have been pushed as singles by Spotify whether presently or in the past. "Talk" hits the top 5 for the first time, and "My Bad" also gets a new peak. His highest new entry is "Outta My Head", which enters the top 20 which amusingly is only the 2nd time John Mayer has ever reached such heights on the singles chart. His only other top 20 single was guesting on Fall Out Boy's cover of "Beat It" in 2008, so clearly people prefer it when they can't clearly hear him seeing words...but really it's because "Your Body Is A Wonderland" spent ages in the top 50 without a high peak, and "Waiting On The World To Change" was a digital only single that wasn't let on the chart. There is a moderately amusing coincidence that the aforementioned "Beat It" cover debuted in the chart while Ashlee Simpson was charting with her song called "Outta My Head". That's not the highest debut of the week however, that honour goes to BLACKPINK. The K-Pop quartet first charted here last year with their "Square Up" EP which charted in the top 100 briefly, before cracking the top 50 alongside Dua Lipa with "Kiss And Make Up". Now while Dua's latest single couldn't make the top 50, their new EP enters right in the top 20, reasonably higher than any K-Pop song that was not recorded by PSY. That being said it could be a short lasting record with BTS waiting in the wings and looking a chance to get even higher. Things are rather bleak on the Australian front, even though there are 7 in the top 50, the highest Australian song this week is only #31 and most of them look like they're on the way down, not up. On the international front, Freddie Mercury would be proud that "Bohemian Rhapsody" spends its 69th week on the chart...at #69. Tom Walker & Why Don't We both score their second ever entries, for the latter it is surely an honour to no longer have their sole chart entry being a collaboration with Logan Paul, though they're still 6 places away from matching that cursed song's peak. Another source of amusement for me is that "lovely" has now spent 42 weeks in the top 50, but 22 of those weeks have been in the #41-#50 range, far more than any other song has ever done to my knowledge.

On the topic of Billie Eilish and Khalid, after the latter helped gift the former her first top 50 hit, the former has repaid the latter by...blocking him from the #1 spot on the album chart. In truth it was a non-contest, as I believe Billie Eilish was #1 on physical sales, digital sales & streams. As the hegemony fortifies with The Greatest Showman returning to the top 10 (maybe because Kesha's "This Is Me" is on a MasterChef ad, who can say really), Khalid's is the only top 10 debut this week. The next highest comes from an Australian rock icon in Russell Morris. Next month will mark 50 years since he hit #1 in Australia with his classic hit "The Real Thing", but his commercial pull came to a sharp decline about a decade later. After several non-charting albums, he had a big comeback in the 2010s with his slow burning hit album "Sharkmouth" which eventually went platinum, a very rare instance for a studio album of original material with no hit singles on it. Since then he's back to making the chart with all his releases, and this latest one improves a bit on his last to land at #12. Also making something of a comeback is Brooks & Dunn, who have only charted in the top 50 once before back in 2007. I only worry that this re-interpretation album of their back catalogue with modern country artists is giving them a new chart peak due to the fact that Australia has a strange, insatiable interest in anything with Luke Combs on it. Also scoring a new chart peak is Sara Bareilles who only previously made the top 50 briefly when "Love Song" was big in 2008. PUP are also new to the top 50 and carry the honour of having the first ever #1 on ARIA's brand new Vinyl Albums Chart. Also new to the top 50 is I Know Leopard who are possibly banking hard on the fact that their song "Landmine" sounds like it says 'love is a lemon', but also because they make good music. I'll also just note Periphery so it's not the only debut I skip, who score their 2nd highest entry to date, a rather usual peak for them aside from the one oddity where their previous album got all the way to #6. Next week BTS will try to make sure some people never see it coming if they can possibly get the highest debut. Norah Jones could also contest as she has been in the country lately to promote her new album. Billie Eilish at #1 again feels like the most likely scenario though.

Australia seems to have a weird obsession with Macklemore... how else would this have gotten more traction than 8 Letters

There has always been a clash in music between those who want to put everything into specific boxes and those who don't. There's no denying that there are a lot of people who only listen to one genre of music, and purely because of people like that we have everything divided to their benefit. It has the unfortunate side effect where this effect carries onto artists and suddenly anything left field is an affront to the genre they're supposed to represent! in the war of genres! Anyway I just find it really funny to see a hit song pushed up by genre controversy from another country's charts. ARIA after all included Halsey's "Bad At Love" on the dance charts. Anyhow, boosted by the remix that exists solely to troll Billboard, Lil Nas X's debut chart entry becomes a #1 hit. If you wish to credit Billy Ray Cyrus, this is his 2nd #1 hit after "Achy Breaky Heart" back in 1992, the last #1 hit before I was born. For reasons unknown Khalid's "Talk" does better the week after the album comes out and gets a new #4 peak. I also might have jumped the gun when I said Dominic Fike was going to peak at #5 because he's climbed back there now, BROCKHAMPTON's impact clearly. Of most note in the top 10, "Sunflower" lasts for a 25th consecutive week in the top 10 (top 7 in fact), which is a new record. Next week it looks likely to become the first song to ever last 26 weeks in the top 10. The other obvious noteworthy thing is that BTS have scored their first top 10 hit via "Boy With Luv" (which is also Halsey's 5th). In due process they block Avicii from debuting in the top 10 but I assume he'll get there next week. As of this week A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie's charting hits have both peaked at #41.

Call it a coincidence but the week that Joker gets added to Smash Ultimate as DLC, we have a #1 album with 'Persona' in its title. This gives BTS the honour of having the first ever Korean language #1 album, and I think it's the first for any Asian language for that matter. It also joins the canon of Troye Sivan's "WILD" and Kanye West's "ye" as one of the shortest #1 albums ever. Tapping a completely different market is the next highest debut from The Seekers, a live album from the 1960s hit makers. Lower down are diminishing returns for Norah Jones & The Chemical Brothers, but Anderson .Paak on the other hand improves his chart peak by 1 position.

There is no stopping Lil Nas X who holds the top spot for a 2nd week running. Supposedly there was a new Taylor Swift single out this week but it's not looking like giving her a #1 at this pace as it's been stuck at #3 on Spotify all week. Billie Eilish & Post Malone are also commencing Australian tours so all their songs have even more reason to hang around on the chart. "Sunflower" now has an unprecedented 26 weeks running in the top 10 and doesn't look like dropping out soon, it even overtook "Wow." this week. Avicii posthumously scores a 7th top 10 hit (and a 3rd for Aloe Blacc technically though he wasn't credited on "Wake Me Up"), Lewis Capaldi gets his first which I choose to attribute to the Endgame Of Thrones pop culture mass making people spend less time on Spotify this week so his sales advantage is more helpful. There are only two songs new in the top 50, with serial Twitter name-searcher Amy Shark scoring her 3rd top 50 hit incidentally with a single that triple j aren't really playing, and the other entry is some garbage that I wish not to acknowledge further.

With a severe lack of big new entries, and a severe lack of staying power from BTS (though they're holding up much better than usual), Billie Eilish returns to #1, and Khalid goes to #2, so ARIA has the same top 3 as Billboard this week. Otherwise the top 10 is a glorious zone of inactivity. The highest new entry is a compilation album from The Rolling Stones, and then we have mass overlap between a double set from Beyonce, with "Lemonade" primarily returning on digital hype pre-streaming release (it didn't make a particularly large impact on Australian Spotify), and her live album right behind it. When I was in Year 12 and took piano lessons, I released an album of such recordings of which I think two copies ever existed. Because I have thus made recorded music, I am apparently allowed to criticise music according to Lizzo, who scores her first ever ARIA Chart entry this week just narrowly making the top 40. She may soon make a splash on the singles chart with "Truth Hurts" having climbed into the top 70 on Spotify so far, but that would require ARIA acknowledging a viral oddity, so flip a coin I suppose.

Lil Nas X locks in a 3rd week at #1. Evidently we're beyond the point that starting a sales week at a margin of 4:1 is any sort of guarantee for a #1 slot. Taylor Swift does manage a #2 debut for "ME!". It's in a bit of a precarious place where it's been locked at #3 on Spotify ever since it was released, but that position is now bolstered by vertical video plays on Hot Hits Australia, Get Popped! and Today's Top Hits that unless ARIA change something (and I wouldn't put it past them), don't contribute to the chart. It's also now down to #3 on iTunes with no optimistic outlook that it'll get any higher. If you want to pay heed to the somewhat condescending crediting, you can say that this is the 2nd Panic! At The Disco top 10 hit after "High Hopes". Also happening in the top 10 is "Sunflower" extending its lead for weeks spent in the top 10 now up to 27 weeks. Post Malone is playing Australian shows at the moment so it's not looking like it's losing steam just yet. It'll probably have to drop a bit next week though as Shawn Mendes & Logic's new songs are making big early impressions. Singlehandedly taking "SICKO MODE" out of the top 50 is "Power Is Power", complete with inconsistent labeling for Travis. P!nk also scores herself a second top 50 hit from her new album which sadly has much less NieR:Automata related content than the title promises. Lower down, Stormzy & Lizzo score their first ever singles chart entries, both have cracked the top 50 on Spotify so they could climb further.

This is Australia. Most people can't confidently tell you who the current prime minister is, but they'll know when P!nk releases a new album. "Hurts 2B Human" becomes her 6th #1 album which includes all her studio albums since "I'm Not Dead" + her "Greatest Hits...So Far!!!" set. With P!nk, it's not a question of how high she'll debut, but how long she'll spend at #1. Billie Eilish may provide some competition with her current Australian tour but I imagine P!nk's sales will keep her at the top. Elsewhere this is a hectic chart as half of the top 10 are debuts, with no soundtracks among them (more on that later). At #3 we had Rob Thomas with his 4th solo album, all of them having reached at least #4, because ever since Matchbox Twenty scored their first hit, Australia gave him their heart, made it real, and never forgot about it. Rob has 1 solo #1 album while Matchbox Twenty have 4. Also because it is a day that ends in 'y', girls are not to be trusted but also there's a new King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard album. Thanks in part to a big vinyl re-pressing last year, the band now have 6 top 10 albums to their name and 11 top 20 albums. Though they almost blocked P!nk from #1 in the US, Hillsong United have a relatively modest debut of #6 here, but it's their 8th top 10 album. Catfish & The Bottlemen's 3rd album to start with 'The' yet again lacks any input from the principle "Seinfeld" cast but it does give them a 2nd top 10 album. ScHoolboy Q also unluckily misses out at #11 for the 2nd time, though he did reach #9 with "Blank Face LP". Part of the reason all of this happened is because ARIA did an ARIA move that is probably valid, but in typical ARIA fashion, was instated in a totally random week well after the damage has been done, and no doubt will make no effort to re-adjust things when the year end chart rolls around. You might recall that in addition to the "Bohemian Rhapsody" soundtrack, there were two different Queen Greatest Hits sets taking up space in the top 10 for about half a year. This has come to an abrupt stop as ARIA have decided that maybe counting streams of one track to multiple albums it's contained on is a bit illogical, and so it seems most streams of tracks are now being only directed to the studio albums they're contained on, which has caused an absolute mass exodus of Greatest Hits compilations and Soundtracks that have otherwise been dominating the chart, which now seemingly will have to make do with whatever pure sales they can muster. Of course because ARIA is ARIA, nothing can be done right, and so seemingly Maroon 5 & Elton John's hit collections in the top 50 are unphased by this. In another vintage move, Australian singer/producer Nick Murphy released a new album and got to #12 on the Digital Albums chart. The issue seems to be that on Spotify, he's credited as Nick Murphy / Chet Faker and because the meta data doesn't match up 100%, ARIA assumably just threw his streams in the bin and he missed the entire top 100. By comparison, his previous album released as Chet Faker spent its first two weeks on the chart at #1. I readily believe that his fame has faded somewhat but not quite to the presented degree.
