I take it this is the longest runner in Australian chart history?

Still DM lol, it's unbeatable. Xmas songs not doing as well here.

I can't speak for everyone but I feel like most Christmas music isn't fit for Australia when we're recording record high temperatures, Sydney is unsafe to breathe in & half the country is literally on fire with our PM leaving us to melt. It's not fun to hear US pop stars tell us about the snow and such :P We'll still get a monstrous boost this week though.

And yeah, Tones easily has the longest running #1 since the old record was "Shape Of You" with 15 weeks. The only exception worth noting is that our really old '40s/'50s charts were back-compiled with monthly data and there are some songs that were #1 for 5 months, but if you were to convert our current charts to the same methodology, Tones is indisputably #1 for August, September, October, November, and though it's not finished, December as well, so she has a 5 month #1 as well.

I always thought it'd be weird to live in the Southern Hemisphere at Xmas as it's basically a European/American holiday so based on winter cultures (with a bit of Jesus added for good taste)!

Was there no long runners before the streaming era!?

Fernando by ABBA lasted 14 weeks, and if you stick with just the ARIA era, Coolio's Gangsta's Paradise had 13 weeks.

Fairytale of New York a new entry this week :P

Fairytale of New York a new entry this week :P

And naturally, only erroneously in the top 50 because ARIA literally hates Bing Crosby & Chris Rea and it's a conspiracy to keep their highly streamed titles out of the chart. Mariah is lucky she only has the ire of one chart company.

So The Pogues are the Mariah of the ARIA charts?

I feel you mean the opposite? I was just pointing out that since they're #49 and there are probably at least 2 songs excluded from the chart, they're erroneously debuting the top 50 (although they should have debuted in the top 100 last year so there is creedence to that). If anything that title should go to BENEE who for the 2nd year in a row, has a respectably sized top 40 hit in every sense of it except that ARIA isn't counting it because brain worms. The only singles of hers that have been let on the chart thus far are a #80ish hit and a #250ish hit.

It's the Christmas week. Tones And I isn't #1 but we don't have a new #1 because Mariah was #1 last year as well. This pushes "All I Want For Christmas Is You" ahead of "Fantasy" as her 2nd longest running #1 outright behind "We Belong Together". She will probably drop out of the top 100 again, and will not have quite an easy ride to #1 in 2020 with Christmas Eve & Christmas Day falling on different chart weeks. Wham! reached #3 on release and I suspect came close to a new peak but lost out on sales ("Dance Monkey" has been the #1 digital seller for 22 non-consecutive weeks now). As expected a month ago, Michael Buble scores his highest ever charting single with "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas" reaching #4. He previously had a #9 hit in 2009 with "Haven't Met You Yet". Because of this perfect storm of tracking week, there are new peaks across the board, but also a lot of debuts. The vast majority of these debuts are just songs that weren't let on the chart last year, though I suspect a handful of them are genuine. By the way there are still songs missing this year but far less. Most notable include "White Christmas" and "Driving Home For Christmas". That's not where the mistakes end though, because Brenda Lee is split between two versions on Spotify, something I'm competent enough to realise but our official charts are not. I don't know if she should be in the ARIA top 10, but she should be top 10 streams so her official position is well off. The only entry this week that doesn't relate to Christmas is a re-entry and new peak for Sofi Tukker which is driven largely by a Hot Hits Australia playlisting, given the missing songs, they've been charting for 2 weeks so far but technically shouldn't have done so yet. They'll rise a lot next week. Something I forgot to mention last week is that for the first time ever, "Shape Of You" and "Perfect" have both left the top 100. Further noteworthy dropouts this week include "Wow.", "Be Alright", "Happier", "3 Nights", "Body", "SICKO MODE" & "Better". This means that the only songs to last the entire year on the chart are "Youngblood", "Eastside", "Sunflower", "Shotgun" and "Shallow".

We were spared for the last 2 years but inevitably the power of streaming and lack of competition means that "Christmas" perfunctorily returns for a 15 week at #1. Otherwise I don't have much to note about this week, but I'm excited to type '(RE)' about 40 times next week.

Also, this is the last chart of the year! As is the usual, I will post the End Of Year charts in this thread as soon as they become available (it's usually about a week into the new year). Otherwise, I'll see you in a new thread for a new year. I can't believe I've been doing this for 5 years now.

To preface this, what you need to know about ARIA is that they go straight from their published data. I am unsure if they count anything below the top 500 (which is how much of a chart they make in-house, though not publishing it), but the main thing I'm saying is that if for instance, a song was missing streams, or just missing from the chart all together, they will not be retroactively fixed in the end of year charts. I am fairly certain "Location" and "XO TOUR Llif3" missed the 2017 list because of this. This doesn't make a huge impact on the Singles list, except that "Ransom" is a little lower than it should be, and Tyga's "Taste" should probably be on the list. Where it does matter is on the album chart, because the album chart have become such a mess, with thanks in no small part to ARIA changing rules about split streams across multiple albums in the middle of the year, which is made arbitrary with Greatest Hits sets, as some still are allowed all the streams, and some aren't. Or this is the best way to rationalise that Maroon 5's quickly cobbled together Singles Collection is so high on the list, Queen probably would have 3 albums in the top 10 if the rule wasn't changed. ARIA also only at the start of 2019 started correctly attributing Dua Lipa's streams (or perhaps just adding in all the collaborations from the deluxe album), which has been allowing her to coast in the top 40 all year round just on streams, and actually rank twice as high this year as she was last year, despite being largely inactive on the charts otherwise until recently. In 2016, "Uptown Funk" became the first song to appear in 3 different End Of Year lists. This year there are (I think) 5 more additions to that canon with "Shape Of You", "Perfect", "rockstar", "I Fall Apart" and "Bohemian Rhapsody", the latter being the first time in the 21st century I think that a decades old song has appeared in its original form. Despite Tones And I's record breaking run at #1, "Old Town Road" had such an unassailable lead that she was never in contention to take the top spot. I actually think that she could have debuted at #1 the week the song was released, and stayed there for 8 whole months, and it would be a pretty close battle. I am a little surprised that "bad guy" managed to overtaken "Sunflower" though, given that the latter is presently the longest running top 10 single ever and nearly still would be even if you only counted its 2019 chart run. On the other hand, its fellow undying 2018 brethren "Eastside" spent 22 weeks in the top 10 in 2018, and just 4 in 2019, but landed only 2 places lower than it did last year, a clear sign of how the streaming market is emphasizing chart run descents more and more. Despite getting to #1 for the first time in years, Michael Buble's "Christmas" is at by far its lowest ever End Of Year position at #65, possibly meaning that streaming is helping thick out the lower end of the list with bigger numbers (though the top end has probably never been weaker). The last thing I want to note is that Billie Eilish scores the #1 End Of Year Album with her debut album, something that had not happened at all this decade until now, but in the 2000s, happened several times with Susan Boyle, James Blunt, Jet and Delta Goodrem.

ALSO ARIA just casually dropped their End Of Decade charts as well, which I will gladly post in their own thread except that it's 4 in the morning and I need more time to mull over my thoughts on that one. If I'm not too busy, I'll do it first thing in the morning.
