Chart Commentary

 

 

In the three chart weeks of 2019 so far, each one has has an entirely unique top two. This week continues that run, with Oscar Enestad leading the way, shooting in at #1 with Sign of My Love. It's an impressive debut when you consider that Oscar's first single Heaven On My Skin spent a sole week in my top 40, entering at #27 and leaving the week after. This marks Oscar's third #1 in total, including two as part of FO&O in 2017. Sign of My Love becomes the highest peaking solo FO&O track, outpeaking Felix Sandman's debut release EVERY SINGLE DAY. Felix has had two further top 10s, while Omar Rudberg hasn't scored a single top 40 yet. Both Oscar and Omar are taking part in this year's Melodifestivalen, so will both have new tracks next month, just a year after Felix came second with EVERY SINGLE DAY and two years after all three of them made the final together as FO&O.

 

Briefly touching on the rest of the chart, there are numerous artists scoring their first hit this week: LÉON, City Girls, Anna of the North, MOMOLAND and Renaida, while Kehlani scores her first as a lead artist.

From one of this year's MFest contestants to a former winner, Frans [Jeppsson-Wall] makes his return this week, over 18 months since his last single Liar was released. Frans scored a duo of #1s in 2016, notably five weeks with his MFest winner, and later Eurovision top 5 hit, If I Were Sorry. It ended the year as my EOY #1 in 2016 too; unquestionably the biggest Eurovision hit my chart has seen. Young Like Us followed it to the top later that year. The following year, Liar limped in at an underwhelming #26, later repeaking at #21 during 2018. Now back with a brand new single after his studies, One Floor Down sees Frans return to the top tier, debuting at #2 this week.

Continuing one of the most intriguing chart runs of recent times, Madison Beer's Hurts Like Hell climbs for a fourth consecutive week. It's on week 10 in total, debuting at #7 in November, so it achieves a new peak this week. After entering, Hurts Like Hell dropped for five weeks, and has rebounded for the last four, showing a yo-yo pattern. The song was already Madison's highest charting single, and now becomes her first top 5 hit, as well as the first for Offset, who still has no other hits.

Jumping into the top 10 for the first time, Sabrina Carpenter's Paris climbs for a second week after its re-entry at the start of the month. Although it's not actually a single, Paris becomes Sabrina's fifth top 10 hit, a tally that includes a #1 with Mike Perry and The Vamps on Hands from mid-2017. It's the second top 10 from Sabrina's Singular Act I EP, following #5 hit Almost Love last year. The current single Sue Me raises 31-28 this week also.

Already a #2 hit last September, Troye Sivan's Lucky Strike returns to the top section of my chart this week boosted by its music video. The track was my instant highlight from Troye's phenomenal Bloom album, and was blocked from #1 only by Matteo Markus Bok's El Ritmo (AHI AHI AHI), which interestingly is also currently in its second stint in the chart right now (dropping 25-35 this week). Lucky Strike is this week's highest climber, up 21-8.

The final new track in this week's huge top 10 clearout, boyband Why Don't We debut at #9 in an impressively quick start, just a day after its release on Thursday (17th). The surprise new single is the first track since their debut album 8 Letters from August last year, and is rumoured to be the first of twelve monthly releases across 2019. It would be a shock if it didn't climb to #1 next week, but for now, it's their sixth top 10 hit, entering at #9 (for comparison, previous single 8 Letters entered at #15 in the same timescale).
