Chart Commentary

 

 

Climbing up a huge fifteen places in its first full week, Why Don't We score a sixth #1 with Cold in LA. It's the second of twelve monthly releases throughout 2019, following Big Plans which also hit #1 in January. Interestingly, both songs have dethroned Oscar Enestad from #1 - Big Plans took over from Sign of My Love, and Cold in LA wins a close battle with I Love It this week. Not only is it the boyband's sixth #1, but all of those were achieved within the past year. Trust Fund Baby, their first #1, climbed to the top on 10th March 2018, with Hooked, Talk and 8 Letters following over the year. This brings them level with Ulrik Munther on six #1s

Achieving what now stands as his longest run of top 10 hits, Zedd scores his eighth top 10 hit with new single 365. It's his fourth top 10 in a row, following #1 hits The Middle and Happy Now, as well as his remix of Shawn Mendes' Lost In Japan. The song is a collaboration with Katy Perry, who achieves her tenth top 10 hit, and first in almost two years, since her overall biggest hit Swish Swish debuted and peaked at #2. That said, Katy does have a #1 to her name - Chained to the Rhythm achieved her best peak to date just a few months before!

Less than a year since the week they locked out four of the top 10 positions, American boyband CNCO score their overall sixth top 10 hit with new single Pretend. It's the second release so far from their forthcoming third album (the first didn't make my chart), and their first single to be released primarily in Spanglish. Of course, Reggaetón Lento is best known in Spanglish form with the Little Mix remix, and Hey DJ also has a Spanglish remix with Meghan Trainor and Sean Paul, but Pretend is unremixed. It's perhaps to tie in with their forthcoming European tour, including a stop off at London (which I'm attending).

Moving on to her second album era, Bebe Rexha instantly nabs an eleventh top 10 hit with Last Hurrah. It follows five top 10s that she achieved in 2018, including her second #1 on Rita Ora's Girls. She's now at five consecutive top 10s, starting with Girls and including her single I'm a Mess, album track Self Control and feature on David Guetta's Say My Name. Last Hurrah debuts at #7 this week, closing out the week's new top 10 entries.
