Chartifacts

from ARIA.com.au

Now becoming the second longest running No.1 this decade, Sandi Thom stays

for a 10th week at the top of the Australian charts with her track

"I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker". It now becomes the sixth track in Australian chart

history to have spent 10 weeks at the top of the charts. The others

were... 1947 - They Say Wonderful Things - Bing Crosby / Perry Como

1959 - Smoke Gets in Your Eyes - The Platters

1971 - Eagle Rock - Daddy Cool

1975 - Mama Mia - Abba

1993 - I Will Always Love You - Whitney Houston

Six new entries this week, and four re-entries to the Top 50. The highest

new entry comes in at No.6, and becomes the fifth consecutive Top 10

single for the Pussycat Dolls. "I Don't Need a Man" recently peaked at No.10 in

the UK, and helps the girls become the first girl group since The

Spice Girls in 1996/97 to have five Top 10 singles in a row. There total was

eventually 10 straight Top 10's, so the PCD's are halfway there.

The second Top 10 debut this week is at No.8, "The Joker and the Thief" by

Multi-ARIA Award winners Wolfmother. After last weeks award's

many of the winners and nominees see their music rise up the charts this week,

more about that below. But this becomes their first Top 10 single,

and is the follow-up to the No.34 single "Woman" from July, which re-enters the

Top 50 this week at No.42.

A man who was supposed to appear at the ARIA's, but was unable to attend

debuts at No.18 this week. Keith Urban's highest ever placed single

comes in at No.18 this week, "Once in a Lifetime". His previous best effort was

the No.34 single "You're My Better Half" back in March 2005. This

track is from his "Love, Pain & The Whole Crazy Thing", which is re-released

this week as a Limited Edition Australian Packaging.

Dutchman Fedde le Grand debuts at No.22 with his former ARIA Club Chart No.1

single "Put Your Hands Up for Detroit". The song debuted at

No.2 in the UK this past week, and features remixes by Aussie acts Dirty South

and TV Rock on the single.

Two former No.7 peaking artists debuting this week with their second chart

singles. At No.32 is Paris Hilton with "Nothing in This World", the

follow-up to "Stars are Blind" (July 2006). And at No.34 is "I Can't Hate You

Anymore" by Nick Lachey, his follow-up to "What's Left of Me" (July 2006).

The ARIA Awards were held last Sunday night, and this weeks charts reflects

many of those winners returns and rises up the charts. As mentioned

above, Wolfmother were winners in 3 catergories, and with their new and previous

single entering the charts this week, their album also returns to the

Top 10 at No.7.

Eskimo Joe won 4 ARIA Awards, including Single of the Year for "Black

Fingernails, Red Wine", which climbs back into the Top 10 this week at No.9,

whilst their follow-up "Sarah" is at No.13, and the parent album also climbs

back into the Top 10 at No.6.

TV Rock won two awards for "Best Dance Single" and "HIghest Selling Single"

for "Flaunt it" which climbs up to No.30 this week, now spending it's

34th week in the Top 50, having originally peaked at No.1 for five weeks.

Also back due to wins and nominations are "One Crowded Hour" by Augie March

(No.35), "Opportunity" by Pete Murray (No.48) and the beautifully

performed "Watch Over Me" by Bernard Fanning (No.49), which also sees his album

"Tea and Sympathy" come back into the albums chart at No.15.

After 15 nominations, Human Nature won their first last week for "Highest

Selling Album" for their first Motown Collection. This week their second

collection "Dancing in the Street" reclaims the throne on the albums chart,

pushing Robbie Williams' "Rudebox" down to No.2.

It's the fifth album for the year to reclaim it's original No.1 position.

The other this year were...

Jan - Curtain Call-The Hits - Eminem

Jan & April - Back to Bedlam - James Blunt

May - Reach Out: Motown Record - Human Nature

July - Black Fingernail, Red Wine - Eskimo Joe

The highest new entry this week comes in at No.3. It's "The Black Parade" by

My Chemical Romance, which features the current No.17 single

"Welcome to the Black Parade". It's their first Top 50 and Top 10 album, as none

of their previous releases have gotten so high.

Right behind MCR at No.4 is Guy Sebastian with his third album "Closer to

the Sun". His previous two albums peaked at No.1, "Just As I Am"

(December 2003) and the No.2 album "Beautiful Life" from October 2004.

The No.1 download single this week is "Chasing Cars" by Snow Patrol. It was

featured in the season finale of Grey's Anatomy this week, and

is not released as a single here yet in Australia. It also helps put their album

back in the charts, re-entering at No.10 this week.

Also re-entering the charts this week is the above mentioned Bernard Fanning

album "Tea and Sympathy" at No.15, and right behind him at No.16

is the woman who touched back down in Australia this weekend, Kylie Minogue,

with the repackaged version of her "Ultimate Kylie" album, this time

featuring a bonus DVD of 30+ tracks.

ARIA Hall of Fame inductees this year, Midnight Oil, release a different

kind of Best of with their new album "Flat Chat", which enters the charts

at No.21 this week. I said it's a different greatest hits package in that most

of the tracks are not singles, but more of their harder-rock tracks put all

together on one album.

The Deftones were last on the charts in 2005 with the "B-Sides and Rarities"

album, and in 2003 they hit the Top 10 with their self-titled album, but

this week they debut at No.26 with the album "Saturday Night Wrist".
