Chart Commentary

 

 

Another week, another new #1, although this one feels like it's been a long-time coming. In some ways, it actually has. Greyson Chance's shut up debuted in my chart two months ago as part of an all-new top 3, giving Greyson his first top 3 hit since 2012's Sunshine & City Lights, his second and most recent #1. Since then, shut up hasn't left my top 10, and repeaked at #2 two weeks ago with the impact of his album portraits. This week, after two weeks in the runner-up position, shut up climbs to #1. It becomes his third #1 overall, and first in 6 years and 5 months. This is quite easily the biggest gap between an artist's #1s in my chart's history. The next biggest gap is 4 years and 1 month for P!nk between True Love and What About Us.

 

All seven of Greyson's charting songs from last week see upward progress this week, notably new single yours climbing 5-3 to become his second top 3 hit of the year (after a six year absence from the top 3) and promotional single timekeeper climbing 13-10 to become his eighth top 10 hit. white roses is new at #39, bringing the hits tally from portraits to eight. Only two (full-length, non-interlude) songs have yet to chart.

 

portraits itself spends a fourth week at #1 in the album chart. This matches the four-week #1 stint of his debut album Hold On 'Til the Night, an album that featured in my first ever chart and peaked at #1 in March 2012. It's worth noting that my chart began in December 2011 and the album came out in the middle of 2011, so it missed out on numerous chart weeks where it would undoubtedly have spent a significant period of time at #1.

This week's highest new entry comes from the first single by Europa, a collaborative project by Jax Jones and Martin Solveig. All Day and Night instantly becomes Jax's fourth top 10 hit and Martin's second - the latter's highest position to date. However, the instant success of the track is more down to the vocalist the duo have enlisted for their first single together. I saw Madison Beer live on Sunday night in an intimate gig, where she performed this track stripped down to close her set, which is when it really clicked with me! Madison also sees her 2018 single Home With You charting for the first time at #22 this week.

The final new song in this week's top 10 comes from DJ duo Sigma, who make their first chart appearance in three and a half years. They achieved four hits over 2014-15, the highest being their only previous top 10, Coming Home with Rita Ora. Now they return with Here We Go Again, which enters at #8, one place higher than Coming Home therefore giving them a new personal best. The song features Louisa, who scores her sixth top 10 hit and, as things stand, her first top 10 that hasn't peaked at #1.
