Chart Commentary

 

 

2019 has seen a changeover at #1 every single week of the year so far. Only Oscar Enestad's I Love It has spent more than a single week at #1, and even that was non-consecutive. This changeover at the top is unprecedented even in my chart, where one-week #1s are quite commonplace! We've never had to wait this long for a multi-week #1 (consecutively) in the past. In fact, the latest time the first multi-week #1 of the year reached the top was week 3, on numerous occasions. This week is week 17...!

The new #1 this week comes from Dominic Fike's 3 Nights. It's Dominic's first chart appearance altogether, and comes off the back of a recommendation from our very own Bré. This makes Dominic the ninth artist to gain their debut chart-topper in 2019 (a tally that includes Ally Brooke and Oscar Enestad as soloists coming from groups that had multiple #1s, and 6LACK, whose #1 single Only Want You with Rita Ora actually made #1 in 2018 before he featured on the track. It returned to #1 in 2019 with the release of his remix), and only the second after 6LACK to get a #1 with their very first chart hit.

 

Farruko and Jack Bruley join Dominic in making their chart debuts this week, while Bea Miller and Theresa Rex achieve new personal bests.

 

 

Already a global hit, Daddy Yankee and Snow's Con Calma finally makes its debut in my chart thanks to the new remix with Katy Perry. I hadn't (and still haven't) heard the original version of the song, but I love Katy's parts and struggle to imagine the song without her! Con Calma becomes Daddy Yankee's highest peak to date, peaking his only previous top 10 - #9 hit We Wanna with Alexandra Stan and Inna in 2015. It's Snow's first hit altogether, and Katy Perry's eleventh top 10, and second of 2019 after #3 hit 365 with Zedd.

Irish singer Brendan Murray is a familiar face to viewers of both Eurovision and The X Factor. The former HomeTown member represented Ireland in Eurovision with Dying to Try in 2017, crashing out in the semi final coming 13th out of 18 countries. He then took place in The X Factor 2018, coming in fifth place after performances of songs including Everybody Hurts, Youngblood and Break Free. He's now releasing his own solo music, with first proper release If I'm Honest out now, preceding his debut solo tour of the same name. It becomes his first top 10 as a soloist, though he achieved a #6 peak as part of HomeTown on the song Roses (which Brendan led).

Their fourth release out of twelve in 2019, American boyband Why Don't We score their ninth consecutive top 10 single with Don't Change, a track from the UglyDolls soundtrack that came out last Friday (19th). It's their lowest peaking track since These Girls, a 2017 release that achieved its #10 peak last year thanks to the success of follow-up #1 single Trust Fund Baby. That said, it continues a run of at least one boyband song being in my top 40 every single week since 2015, when 5 Seconds of Summer's She's Kinda Hot made its debut. Not a week has gone by since then without one boyband single, with big hitters like One Direction and The Vamps joining with newbies PRETTYMUCH and CNCO and more obscure bands like Suite 16 to continue the chain!
