X&Y named 2005 worldwide best seller

Source: Music Week

Coldplay’s X&Y has been named as the biggest selling album in the world in 2005 by the IFPI.

The band’s third album, which debuted at number one in 20 countries in June 2005, sold more than 8m copies worldwide to head the world’s best-selling albums list, ahead of Mariah Carey and 50 Cent.

In addition, X&Y was the best-selling digital album of the year in the US, according to Nielsen Soundscan.

This is the second time that Coldplay have appeared in the top 10 since the IFPI began publishing the list in 2001. In 2003 the band’s second album A Rush Of Blood To The Head was the sixth best-selling album globally.

It is also the second time in three years that an album by an EMI artist has topped the list: in 2003 Norah Jones’ Come Away With Me was the world’s best selling album.

EMI Music chairman and CEO Alain Levy says, "This is a huge achievement for Coldplay. They have developed long-term global success over the course of a number of albums, and I’m sure that they will continue to build their career for many years to come."

The top 10 albums of 2005 were:

1. Coldplay – X&Y

2. Mariah Carey – The Emancipation of Mimi

3. 50 Cent – The Massacre

4. Black Eyed Peas - Monkey Business

5. Green Day – American Idiot

6. Madonna – Confessions On A Dancefloor

7. Kelly Clarkson – Breakaway

8. Eminem – Curtain Call

9. James Blunt – Back To Bedlam

10. Robbie Williams – Intensive Care

:o Bloody hell that did well, considering it only did well in the US this year

Great news for Coldplay and I guess that sums up that they are te biggest band in the world at the moment.
Surprised the Peas are so high. Gwen's 'Lamb' is the only massive seller in the US that seems to be missing.
As i said in the previous thread Robbie's sales are truely remarkable considering IC was'nt released in the US. All of the rest of the top 10 sold alot in the US yet robbie sells nothing their and still sells 5.4 million and IC has only been out since the end of October :D IC is now approching 6 million worldwide
