Chart Commentary

 

 

In a week swarmed by the Eurovision effect, we still manage to have a #1 single entirely unrelated to the contest. Shawn Mendes drops 1-5 after two weeks at #1 to make way for Why Don't We's fifth release of 2019. Unbelievable is a return to the highs the boys are expected to achieve in my chart, following all four of their 2018 singles and the first two 2019 releases, Big Plans and Cold In LA, to #1. The third release, I Don't Belong In This Club, finished at #4 while Don't Change charted at #10. Unbelievable is their sixth #1 in total and their tenth top 10 hit in a year and a bit.

Unlucky #2 for the second single in a row, Charli XCX is new alongside Lizzo on Blame It On Your Love. Though Charli has four #1s to her name, she has finished in runner-up position with both this and last year's 1999. That one finished behind froy's sideswipe after I met him, so both saw tough competition. It does however become her twelfth top 10 hit, and Lizzo's very first, outdoing her #20 best achieved with Tempo this year.

This year sees the biggest Eurovision impact to date. While none of this year's entrants have made #1, five of them storm the top 10 this week. Ten of this year's entries have charted in total, with nine of them featuring this week (only Eliot's Wake Up doesn't re-enter this week after charting before). The previous record is the eight that charted in 2016's contest, led by the biggest Eurovision-related chart hit my chart has seen - If I Were Sorry by Frans. Leading this year's pack is Miki Núñez, representing Spain with La Venda. It previously peaked at #20 but now re-enters at #3, one spot ahead of Sweden's John Lundvik. Switzerland's Luca Hänni and Cyprus' Tamta all feature in my top 10 too, each achieving their first top 10 appearance on their very first chart hit.

Though it's included above as a Eurovision song, Mahmood's Soldi is a slightly separate case this week as it charts in remix form. The version of Soldi that I've been listening to is slightly different to Italy's Eurovision entry, as it features Finnish popstar Isac Elliot providing an extra verse. Isac's one of the most consistent hitmakers in my chart, nabbing a top 10 hit every year since his debut single New Way Home in 2013. His first #1 Mouth to Mouth came in the first week of 2018, and now Soldi becomes his eleventh top 10 hit. Much like the other Eurovision artists, Soldi is Mahmood's first hit.
