Royal Variety Performance 2006 - a host of celebrities and artists unveiled

A host of celebrities and artists from the worlds of music, comedy and theatre will be performing in the 78th annual Royal Variety Performance at the London Coliseum on Monday 4 December 2006 in the presence of Their Royal Highnesses, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall.

This year the top of the bill will be Rod Stewart, making his first ever Royal Variety appearance.

The king of the Copacabana, Barry Manilow, will be doing a selection of Sixties hits and Meatloaf will be rocking up the stage with his first ever Royal Variety Performance singing a song from his new album and a classic duet with a surprise guest.

It will be girls versus boys as the reformed Take That, the boy band of all boybands, do something old and something new singing two very special versions of their biggest hits and the most successful girl band of the past few years, the feisty Sugababes will also be sassing up the stage with a once in lifetime performance.

Also performing will be burlesque girl band The Puppini Sisters and soulful rocker James Morrison.

From the world of theatre the crème of the West End will come together for one night only.

Tim Curry leads the cast of Monty Python's Spamalot, BBC winner Connie Fisher and the Von Trapp children perform a medley from The Sound of Music, the cast of new West End hit and multi-award winning Wicked hop on their broomsticks and the puppets from Avenue Q show us just how naughty felt can be.

Captain Jack Harness will take some time out from solving alien mysteries as John Barrowman takes to the stage in Forties mood as we revisit the supper clubs of old (and new).

Also appearing at this year's performance will be award-winning comic Omid Djalili, spectacular quick change illusionists David and Dania, comedian Jason Byrne and the inimitable Ken Dodd.

As ever there will be a host of surprise guests and walk-ons.

Other guests on the night will include Katie Price and Peter Andre, Paul O'Grady, Vernon Kay, Noel Edmonds, Patrick Swayze and many many more.

There will also be many surprises for the audience and viewers at home.

The Royal Variety Performance is an annual charity event in aid of the Entertainment Artistes' Benevolent Fund. It will be shown on BBC One in December.

It was recorded live on Monday (04/12/06) and it'll be shown on TV on Tuesday 12th December

The song they're doing is Hole In The Head, and I think it's the extended version, so should be sweet :D

Check this out:

SAMBA drummers from Liverpool are to perform by royal appointment.

The city's Community Samba Band will support the Sugababes at the Royal Variety Performance next month.

Twenty-one members of the band will drum live onstage while the girl band, whose members include Liverpool's Heidi Range, sing Hole in the Head.

The samba band was approached after the Liverpool-born drummer who tours with the Sugababes suggested they become part of the band's set for the royal event.

The Royal Variety Performance is on Monday, December 4, at the London Coliseum in front of the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.

Among stars on the bill are Take That, Meatloaf, James Morrison, Barry Manilow, John Barrowman and the cast from the new productions of The Sound of Music and Spamalot.

Stephen Murray, co-founder of the Batala Community Samba Band, said: "We've a full day's rehearsal with the Sugababes in London next week."

Batala is a form of Samba drum music which originated in north eastern Brazil. The Batala Community Samba Band was set up in February 2005.

It has 35 members with more than 20 hopefuls on the waiting list. Mr Murray said: "We've had the most fantastic exposure over the last 12 months, starting with playing in front of Paul McCartney in January.

"Throughout the summer we really launched ourselves and we played at the Notting Hill Carnival with Samba bands from across Europe.

"Our only problem at the moment is finding somewhere in Liverpool city centre to rehearse. We're currentlyhaving to practise in Widnes. Wherever it is needs to be well soundproofed."

Viewers will have to wait until Tuesday, December 12, to see the Royal Variety Performance on television. TheBatala band will be playing in St Helens town centre on Thursday, December 21.

Do you think they were trying to give OK Go a run for their money? When I first saw them I was like  What the hell are they doing - walking but not going anywhere

Definitely the performance of the night - I cant believed they mimed...yet they must have been trying so hard to do it perfectly - it looked great

I'm looking forward to their performances on The Album Chart Show

Should be good as it's a decent show (it was recorded today)

They are doing 03 songs:

Freak Like Me

Rocks (By Primal Scream)

Overload

They duetted with Primal Scream earlier on in the year for Rocks at some festival so must have thought that it sounded 1/2 decent :D

I think The Album Chart Show is on about 12:30pm on Friday's if anybody's bothered ^_^

Oh cool, I hope this promo gets the GH back into the top 10 even though it is looking rather unlikely.

Nevermind the sales are still strong so it's all good. :D

If that was'nt mimed then im a flying monkey. The vocals were too perfect, i'ts a very low song and none of them seemed to struggle with it. Considering its a big performance for them - Heidi never even wobbled like she usually does.

I must say though, it was i think the only performance i've seen Sugababes mime.

It so wasn't mimed dude- you could hear the changes that they made from the CD version of the song- i suggest that you watch the clip again and see. They are usually excellent live anyway.
It was mimed. They re-recorded it, but did'nt tweak it - just left it as it was. That was what made it seem live.
