No, not Del Rey you loons. She’s a new soloist who recently surfaced onto the K-pop world and her presence in the industry has gathered a lot of controversy amongst K-pop fans. And not even in Korea - most of her backlash has come from international stans.

On paper, she seems to have had a standard debut cycle: a couple of pre-debut media appearances as a trainee, then she records a single and her company released her into the Wild. But here’s the kicker: she’s not Asian. Not just that... she’s white. And there, supposedly, lies the problem.

There have been a couple of non-Asian K-pop idols in the past, so this concept isn’t entirely foreign. There had been a couple European Caucasian idols who were part of groups that only lasted a few months. Then there’s Alex Reid, a black k-pop idol, who was added to BP Rania for nearly a year and a half (but the way the company handled them was a mess and yeah you get the picture). So there’s clearly been a Non-Asian idol in a group that’s as known as BP Rania before, so why is it a problem now?
