Did anyone else like Cockney Rebel in the 70’s? A short lived band in the mid 70’s they had a few top 10 hits and one number one, “Make me smile (come up and see me). Their first hit was in 1974 “Judy Teen†and used the imagery from cult film “A Clockwork Orange†and it provided them with a legion of trench coated and gaunt looking fans wearing one false eyelash.

Harley constantly feuded with the music press, who responded by printing ever more derisive reviews. The press always thought he was arrogant.

Other hits included Mr Soft (which was used as an advert jingle in the 90’s), and Here comes the sun (a beatle song). But by the end of 1976 it was all over.

A macabre piece of trivia was that former bass player Paul Avron Jeffreys was killed in the Lockerbie air disaster.

Yep, went to see them  Steve Harley may have seemed arrogant, but I've seen film of him saying that he and Queen were signed to the same record label at roughly the same time, and one of them went on to have incredible success ;) and he was laughing at the time
my fav act of 74.75.... about the only act i liked .... got 'the psychomodo' and 'make me smile' was my top track of 75 and i still love it today :)

I've seen Steve Harley twice when he does his theatre tours.

He was an excellent singer/songwriter. While his Sound Of the 1970s on BBC Radio 2 every Tuesday 22:00 - 22:30hrs is worth a listen.

But like a lot of artists, IMHO his finest song was his first:
