25. She Loves You (1963) / non-album single

6/21 votes

Now it is another non-album single to drop out! Despite featuring in the 'Hard Day's Night' movie, 'She Loves You' didn't quite end up on the accompanying studio album. The anticipation for this single was enormous in the UK, as a whopping 500,000 orders had been placed for it up until the day before it came out. It absolutely smashed the charts in the UK when it was released, racking up 6 non-consecutive weeks at #1 and a staggering 18 weeks in the top 3! In the UK it is also their best-selling single, the highest-selling single of the 1960s and had the all-time record until Wings' 'Mull Of Kintyre' surpassed its sales. It was a phenomenon. The British Invasion wouldn't quite catch on in the US yet, but when it did, 'She Loves You' was one of the five Beatles songs to occupy the entire Billboard Hot 100 top 5 during that famous chart week. 'She Loves You' is slightly unusual for a love song, as the narrator is commenting on the situation of two estranged lovers, rather than their own love for someone else. The song immediately begins with some electric drumming from Ringo and an introduction of the hook. On this famous 'yeah yeah yeah' part, John Lennon said: "I don't know where the 'yeah yeah yeah' came from [but] I remember when Elvis did 'All Shook Up' it was the first time in my life that I had heard 'uh huh', 'oh yeah', and 'yeah yeah' all sung in the same song" - so the group came up with something equally as stirring. When The Beatles played the song to Paul's father, he disapproved of the Americanisms and said it should have been "she loves you, yes, yes, yes!". The refrain quickly became iconic and is often incorporated into Beatles-related headlines. Despite its enormous success, BuzzJack is not quite as keen, as 'She Loves You' finishes in the bottom 3 of this survivor.

I am definitely of the opinion that the Beatles' later work (aka 'Rubber Soul' onwards) is more impressive, but I have a soft spot for 'She Loves You'. Shame to see that out so early. It's ridiculously catchy and a highlight when I saw The Bootleg Beatles live a few years ago!

Going for 'Get Back' again ~

I'm literally just voting for everything pre-Ticket to Ride until they're all gone so I'm open to any bribes/bandwagons that may occur x

Going with A Hard Days Night for now

The first two are the weakest left for me, opting for From Me To You this time. I do like everything else after those though.
Right now I've actually heard the couple of songs I didn't recognise from the titles x I voted for 'Get Back', a clear weak link imo (and I think the only song on the entire list that I'd definitely not heard before as I didn't recognise it at all).

Still a tie folks! I wanted to get the next round up tonight after work, so if someone could break it before about 6pm then that'd be great.
Sorry just realised I've not voted. Went for 'The Long and Winding Road' this time around.
