Posted November 14, 200618 yr this month's OMM poll as selected by Rufus Wainwright . http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/ff/Atlanta2002.jpg so who is the best gay icon ever? do you agree with his choices
November 15, 200618 yr I don't understand. What is his reason for selecting someone like 'Kate Bush' ..mainly because she pioneered theatre in her stage shows... using Lindsay Kemp to do all the choreography.... and her early stuff, especially the videos, was all uber-camp (ever seen the Hammer Horror video?)...plus, she was one of the first singers to sing openly gay love songs (Kashka from Baghdad) and has always been a champion of gay rights....
November 15, 200618 yr pink.......anyone whos been to her gigs will know lol there are more gay/lesbians there than straight people
November 15, 200618 yr I saw Pink getting off her tourbus in Cardiff last week.... miserable, she looked. I can't believe people are voting Kylie... over Madonna?!?!?! Like Kylie as I do - her whole act has been influenced massively by Madonna, and, as a gay man, I can tell you Madonna's had 100% more impact on the gay world than Kylie has.
November 15, 200618 yr And as a gay man i totally disagree. She had a huge gay following for years and im still one of them but I still think she turned her back on the gay community for a while. Then when her career wasnt doing to well (by her standards) she camped it up for the last album and videos. I am a huge but I just think she trying to hard at the moment.

Her live shows have always been camp as Christmas, her videos always give a big nod to the gay community - for gay men and women, and her music, from the Madonna album right through to Confessions, has always had its main influence on the gay dancefloors? I like Kylie - but there's little doubt, even by her own admission, that if there'd been no Madonna there'd be no Kylie - so to say Kylie influences anyone, especially gay men, more than Madonna does - ludicrous.

Absolutely correct mate.. Madonna, probably more than anyone in the mainstream pop world made Gay cool and brought it out into mainstream acceptance and helped changed attitudes.. Sure there had been Frankie, Marc Almond, etc before her, but they were more marginal figures as far as worldwide acceptance was concerned and their influence was somewhat limited to UK.... When Madge was doing stuff like "Express Yourself", "Vogue", etc and cavorting around with legions of gay male dancers, what was Kylie up to..?? "Locomotion"?????
November 16, 200618 yr To me, I think both Kylie and Madonna have both equal appeal in the gay community, but I chose Kylie for the simple fact that I prefer her. I do love them both though.
November 16, 200618 yr Not to sound rude but I think anybody who doesn't say Madonna is simply voting for who they prefer. In terms of popular culture it is clearly Madonna - and that's despite me prefuring Kylie. And Madonna never turned her back on her gay following. If anyone, it was Kylie. She tried to hard to do a 180 turn regarding peoples perceptions of her and her music that she alienated her fanbase completly in the 90's. Madonna never did, she experimented in sound and image but never scared her fans of basically. Only thing Im surprised about is that Cher is not even mentioned in this list. November 16, 200618 yr Not to sound rude but I think anybody who doesn't say Madonna is simply voting for who they prefer. In terms of popular culture it is clearly Madonna And that's exactly how I personally gauged it, in terms of Popular Culture.. My own personal preference is for Morrissey and Kate Bush as far as the actual music goes....
November 16, 200618 yr Ozmead hit the nail on the head there - this is about the artist's dent on popular culture - not what artist you personally prefer.... like Scott, if this were the case, I'd side with Kate Bush and Morrissey.
November 16, 200618 yr Kylie had her experimental album (Impossible Princess) and madonna had hers (Ray of light). These are hardly your typical camp albums. Dont get me wrong. I agree that madonna was one of the first main acts to make being gay more accetable but I think with this new album its more pushed down people throats just like kylie did with light years. And to say that without Madonna there would be no kylie is just rubbish. Fact is they are both gay icons and loved by the whole gay scene
November 16, 200618 yr And to say that without Madonna there would be no kylie is just rubbish. Well, it aint just me, Ozmead and Russ saying it, the lady herself says it as well... There's no getting round it, Madonna was Kylie's inspiration for even embarking on a pop career in the first place.. You have to remember, Kylie was a soap opera actress in the first instance...
November 16, 200618 yr Kylie's said it herself - on numerous occasions...and, as Scott says... when Madonna was pushing boundaries with Justify My love and REALLY pushing the gay issue in people's faces, poor old Kylie was singing the Locomotion.... end of, really.
November 17, 200618 yr Author Madonna is the biggest gay icon  rufus thinks its Judy Garland as the names are in top ten order from number one top
