Lalala is legitimately one of my faves of the year. It's just to catchy and the fun video really sold it for me too.

it's certainly very catchy, and it's done very well to be the top rap song in this countdown.

Different World was unfortunately my least favourite of Alan's recent offerings, obviously a powerful message but sadly the style wasn't really something I could get behind.

I did love We Got That Cool though, as you say it worked the sample really well and certainly turned it into its own song which was great to hear!

'Lalala' does feel a bit guilty pleasure but it works a lot better than most of its type.

I didn't think 'Different world' was a whole lot different to his usual sound but stood out amongst his new album tracks anyhow.

I actually really like Lalala, it's objectively trash but so infectious :lol:

I do like a good bit of "objectively trash" rap so no surprise it was a hit in my chart really!

Commentary

 

For the third consecutive year deep house producer Nora has 2 entries here. Although not doing quite as well as the 2 previous years, she's still been very consistent and early in the year we got a rare vocal track of hers with Ashibah providing the vocal - and before you ask it is not a Rihanna cover version. It's a rather lovely track and has a great string section too.

We come to another track which peaked late in 2018 but obviously spent longer in the chart last year, a great track which sadly both of their follow-up tracks couldn't quite replicate (both missed my top 50). Here's what I had to say last year.

 

We haven't really heard much from Sub Focus over the past few years so of course his team up with Dimension (fresh off his BJSC entry) was going to be a hit with me. This is a standout drum n' bass tune, which we haven't had from Sub Focus in a while so I'm willing to bet Dimension really made it stand out, I'd say he's top of this genre at the moment, you can just hear how well his tracks are produced. His 'Black Church' of course we'll see very high up.

Another trance song that you probably haven't heard of and there'll be a good few more to come! This one was put out on Gareth Emery's label so unsurprisingly it does sound rather much like what he'd release, but it managed to give Omnia his first top 40 hit after 'Cyberpunk' broke him through for me (although he's been around for a while). He'll also be making a few more appearances as part of Futurecode.

Commentary

 

Avicii took up 24 weeks of the year at #1 with his 3 posthumous single releases. However his influence doesn't end there as just weeks before the beginning of the Tim era came an unlikely tribute from composer Thomas Bergersen under the Two Steps From Hell brand, accompanied by Chris Bleth who gets a feature credit for his flute solo and Merethe Soltvedt on vocals (although there aren't any actual lyrics). Best known outside BJSC for doing trailer music, however for what will probably be a one time only effort he made an epic which the second half of is a dance track.

 

Of course it was that which made me very intrigued to hear the song but that isn't to put down the first half, which is a truly outstanding orchestral composition in its own right and perfectly segues into the following section. EDM clearly isn't Bergersen's expertise but he does a great job of it, plus we don't get enough orchestral dance. This also has to win the prize for best key change moment of the year too, I love the way it ends with a ton of energy compared to the mellow opening section.

 

With its 11 minute runtime it subsequently became the longest song to reach #1 in Thermo's hot hitstory as well as the longest song to have won the BJSC (which I really didn't see coming – it was sent to mark my 75th entry with an Avicii inspired song rather than as a winning attempt). Sadly due to its length, this falls a fair bit lower than it should otherwise be as my sales formula is partly based on playcount.

Finally we get to another actual UK top 40 hit (with the last one being from Sigala at #78!). It is for Kygo who has had a brilliant 2019, it's actually been his best year to date as he has no less than 4 entries in the chart, this being the first of them, and without having even released an album. Although he's never had an album bomb before, he could if he keeps up this quality.

 

Anyway, the logical next step after releasing a song with Avicii collaborator Sandro Cavazza was to work with one of his more well-known collaborators in Rita Ora - which for whatever reason was done for the Pokemon film despite there seemingly being no connection to the franchise in the song. I still haven't seen the film but I gather it was only an end credits song anyway. It's a lovely song accompanied by one of Kygo's more uptempo productions although very much keeping true to his style. It was also great to have Rita do 2 more dance tracks this year and this was my clear fave of those.

Oh okay, I always forget that she's also an actor. Still doesn't mean the song sounds fitting for the film though, Kygo should have remixed the original Pokemon theme instead. :lol: although I'm glad we did get 'Carry On' out of it if the song wasn't going to be made otherwise.

Both 'Desire' and 'Emerald Princess' are big highlights on this page :heart: your BJSC entry 'Black Church' definitely heightened my hype for the former as much as I liked Sub Focus anyway. It's a very bouncy and high energy offering from them! Then 'Emerald Princess' is such a journey that really serves its long duration well. I'm a sucker for strings and electronic music so put them together in such a classy way and bam, I was sold.

Giving We Found Love a listen now, really enjoying it! The strings are a really fab touch.

 

Nice to see Carry On this high up your list also, this year was certainly a much better one for Kygo and I think this started the up-turn of his music for me. It missed my Top 40 in the end but definitely one of the better Top 40 hits this year.

Desire was another really solid offering from Sub Focus and Dimension, just wish it had somehow made it into the UK top 40 rather than hovering in the top 75 for seven weeks, it deserved better than a number 51 peak.

 

Carry On was great too, loved it a lot at the time and still do but can't say I've listened to it that much recently, kinda dropped it in favour of Higher Love!

It's been a great year for Arty as he has three appearances in the Hottest 100 this year, doubling his total Hottest 100 appearances. The first of these is 'Avalanche', which is also another instrumental track in the countdown. It's a great progressive trance track that's also reminiscent of the SHM/Alesso era of EDM.

After countless remakes of 'Show Me Love' over the years, it was about time one of Robin S' other songs got an update and it is English house DJ Ryan Blyth who took 'Luv 4 Luv'. Commentary

 

And not long after 'Carry On' we reach the 2nd Kygo entry. This was his first release of 2019 and introduced Valerie Broussard, who does a great vocal here although she is yet to chart here with anything else. I like this for basically the same reasons as 'Carry On' anyhow, the two songs are quite similar but it's a style Kygo does best.

Commentary

 

Russian trance producer Denis Kenzo came on my radar with 'Guide' which is still yet to come. His other entry in the Hottest 100 is this which features Susie Ledge who provides a great vocal. She also sang the first BJSC entry that I sent (which only made #42 in the chart). If you enjoyed 'Guide' from BJSC then this is quite similar so you may like.

Commentary

 

'Freefalling' originally dates from 2009 however made my chart at #98 following its BJSC appearance. For 2019 however it was given a new mix by Futurecode (the side project of Ben Gold & Omnia) which in my opinion vastly improves it. The beat has more of a thump to it and the synths sound bigger, but Audrey's beautiful vocal is still retained. We'll be seeing again from Futurecode twice more (although this is now my 2nd fave of theirs it didn't have quite enough time to overtake their next entry here).
