We now reach yet another random ASOT find this time for Canadian progressive house/trance producer Dezza with 'Cold Outside' (how apt for EOY season). It's his only hit here so far although I did give his album a play too.

Both 'Desire' and 'Emerald Princess' are big highlights on this page :heart: your BJSC entry 'Black Church' definitely heightened my hype for the former as much as I liked Sub Focus anyway. It's a very bouncy and high energy offering from them! Then 'Emerald Princess' is such a journey that really serves its long duration well. I'm a sucker for strings and electronic music so put them together in such a classy way and bam, I was sold.

'Desire' is definitely one of the best tracks from Sub Focus, amazing how it came so far into his career as otherwise his early 10s stuff is better to his newer material.

I do love a good string section so a dance track with a great orchestral backing like 'Emerald Princess' was always going to do well for me.

Giving We Found Love a listen now, really enjoying it! The strings are a really fab touch.

 

Nice to see Carry On this high up your list also, this year was certainly a much better one for Kygo and I think this started the up-turn of his music for me. It missed my Top 40 in the end but definitely one of the better Top 40 hits this year.

Nora always seems to have those nice little touches to her music which is why she is seemingly ever-present in my chart

It's been Kygo's best year for me, although my absolute fave of his remains 'Firestone'.

 

Desire was another really solid offering from Sub Focus and Dimension, just wish it had somehow made it into the UK top 40 rather than hovering in the top 75 for seven weeks, it deserved better than a number 51 peak.

 

Carry On was great too, loved it a lot at the time and still do but can't say I've listened to it that much recently, kinda dropped it in favour of Higher Love!

A top 40 peak would've been amazing but I was surprised it even went top 100 so I'll take 51.

I suppose Higher Love was the better quality one, it is still to feature in my rundown anyway.

Commentary

 

I hadn't heard of Fisher before but the Australian DJ brought this out which quickly topped the Beatport chart and was apparently the biggest song of Tomorrowland, so I had to check it out and yep, it is brilliant. The bass wobble is something that needs to be a thing in more songs as really makes this infectious, and the accompanying siren with each drop adds to its anthemic appeal too. Overall it's one of those tracks that sound excellently produced despite how repetitive it is, and I'm pleased to see it get Radio 1 and Hot Hits UK support too (coming for an official top 100 chart position maybe?). It could even end up in next year's chart as it'll be heading back into my top 40 this week and it still hasn't got old.

And here it is, even higher this year too thanks to a great New Years effect. Still haven't got into any of his other songs yet though.

After missing out on 2018's list, Zara returns to get a fourth year in the Hottest 100 although it could very well be her last. I could never fully get into her comeback single 'Ruin My Life' (only managing a #69 peak) but this was instantly great for me... so of course that meant it was a huge underperformance in the actual charts making the song title somewhat ironic. Zara works best for me against a lite dancepop beat and that's exactly what this is, with a great hook telling her ex to go love himself.

Commentary

 

Avicii makes his 5th appearance in the Hottest 100 with another Tim album track. This one was an instant highlight of the album for having one of the biggest hooks and drops on the album, it was the track that most sounded like a hit single aside from 'Heaven' and 'SOS' but I suspect it would've struggled to take off post-album. It's another personal track of his with the lyrics seemingly about his mental health issues, although with the bridge sung in the perspective of those pushing him too much to get as much money as they could off his success. Despite being the top album track for a good number of weeks there is actually one more album track still to come..

Commentary

 

Only two songs spent more time in the top 10 than this song within the tracking year, but not enough weeks spent in the chart entirely means it unfortunately just misses out on a top 10 position. It was of course the commercial follow-up to 'Cola' that CamelPhat remixed, having been originally just Au/Ra's song. It's a great song about her anxiety, a fairly relatable topic that we don't get many pop songs about. Although I'm not so keen on it in original form, CamelPhat vastly improve it with their impressive house production, which really adds to the mood of the song. They're a real breath of fresh air in the commercial dance music scene at the moment so it was great to see this become a real sleeper hit, and hopefully 'Breathe' can give them a third top 40 hit (and it'll almost certainly appear in my 2019 EOY). As for Au/Ra, she's impressive (particularly so for her young age) and hopefully she features on some more dance tracks as she was great on both this and 'Darkside'.

Well Au/Ra quickly stopped getting hits, with none in 2019 aside from her 2018 leftovers. CamelPhat still have a few to come.

A brilliant trance effort that you may be aware of from BJSC which Lewis sent although I may have sent it too had it not already been taken as it was a very quick grower for me, eventually spending three weeks at #1 in part thanks to the combined effects of BJSC and the album release. The anonymous vocalist (who according to a YouTube comment is Zoe Lowe) does a standout performance on this too but it's all about the synth heavy drop for me although the energy is kept up throughout the entirety of the song which I also love. Ben Gold is excellent at producing these big trance songs and he's definitely one of my fave discoveries of the past few years. Unfortunate timing for this means it's kept out of the top 40, it's definitely up there otherwise.

One of the year's most surprising comebacks in my chart was that of Vassy who I hadn't been following for years aside from featuring on another David Guetta track which only made #77, and I didn't even expect this to eventually reach the top 40 when I first charted it. However she teamed up with Disco Fries (the producers who don't seem to get a credit on the artwork or YT video although they are credited on Spotify) for this great bit of super generic dance, complete with a drop consisting of overdone vocal chops. I even considered this as a BJSC entry but it probably would perform poorly. She's got a great vocal though which definitely suits a song like this (it's not half as robotic as you'd expect if you've only heard her on 'Bad'), making it stand out above the many others of its type.

Commentary

 

The KSHMR assisted 'Lucky Chances' gave Bali Bandits their first and so far only hit towards the beginning of 2019. With its warm synths and ethereal vocal it's quite lowkey by KSHMR's standards but his influence can be heard, the drop very much fits the vibe the song is going for too.

Commentary

 

The chart, music and topical Queen had more #1s this year on my chart than anybody, though this hasn't had enough time to make my top 100 (the other three will). This one particularly seems to have a lot of undeserved hate but I really like it, it's an uplifting song and very much suits her voice (I can't imagine I'd like it too much if given to Little Mix or Anne-Marie). It led a very solid album which cements her place as my current fave pop singer.

Just missing the top 50 this year, though its total sales would put it in the top 20. This is certainly one of my fave pop ballads of the last few years anyhow, she really sells this. It's not the last we'll be seeing of her either as 'All I Am' has made the top 50 for a 2nd time.

Panic Room really should've been top 10 last year for me but it makes up for it with having a 2nd year top 100.

Commentary

 

We start the top 50 with what will be the biggest UK and worldwide hit of the lot, the megasmash from Tones and I which could very easily appear in 2020's Hottest 100 as well. Her vocal on this track proved to be polarising but I love it, it reminded me of Sia in the best way. It's a song about her days spent busking which cleverly fits the title and hook, and what a catchy hook this is. There's a real distinct lack of unique pop records these days so this was amazing to hear even if it took a short while to actually be a proper hit in my chart.

Glad you enjoy Lucky Chances. I would've considered it for BJSC but KSHMR had been sent too many times by then (although he did get sent again later in the year with another song).

Dance Monkey really deserves more than 11 weeks too, it's still the most popular song right now. Definitely the best UK #1 of 2019 for me too.

It was THE best UK #1 of last year no question bout it.

I don't mind Stormzy but Ed was too overexposed these past few years. I'm glad he's going on hiatus anyway even if it means he'll be back big as ever by 2021/2.

Glad you enjoy Thursday. Carry On was a bit of the opposite for me being one of the few songs in this rundown to have peaked first week but it's still great.
