07. Hello, Goodbye (1967) / Magical Mystery Tour

8/17 votes

Next to leave is 'Hello, Goodbye'! This is the second song in a row to drop from the U.S. album version of 'Magical Mystery Tour'. It's just 'Penny Lane' remaining from that record now. 'Hello, Goodbye' was released during the Christmas period with 'I Am The Walrus' as its B-side. John Lennon pushed for 'I Am The Walrus' as the A-side (imagine if that had happened!) but 'Hello, Goodbye' was chosen as the more commercially viable option. It was a wise choice as 'Hello, Goodbye' became their fourth Christmas #1 in the U.K. and spent a whopping 7 weeks at the top of the chart. It was a #1 hit in the U.S. too for 3 weeks. Paul McCartney was the mind behind 'Hello, Goodbye' after getting inspiration from a word association exercise with one of Brian Esptein's assistants, Alistair Taylor. 'Hello Goodbye' ended up being The Beatles' first release after Epstein's death. The song was recorded towards the end of filming for their 'Magical Mystery Tour' film and features in the end credits of the movie. 'Hello Goodbye' contains a lot of simple antonyms appropriate for an international audience, therefore it was considered as an option for the group to play for the 'Our World' television broadcast. However, as mentioned in the commentary for the previous round, it was 'All You Need Is Love' that was chosen in the end. 'Hello, Goodbye' has an accompanying promotional film (uploaded to YouTube in glorious 4k quality!) featuring the band in their Sgt. Pepper's uniforms. They are also joined by hula dancers towards the end of the video.

'Hello, Goodbye' is such a joyful song  I especially like the experience of watching it with the colourful promotional video.

Going for 'Let It Be' again.

Ticket To Ride is probably my least favourite from those remaining but as it's my birthday no.1,I'm leaving it alone. So instead,I voted for Let It Be.
