However when it became a worldwide smash it re-entered and I loved it properly. It is just a great cheesy pop song, with loads of parodies and memes based on the chorus made on the internet. I don't see how it's possible to hate this song (my brother would have the complete opposite arguement) and even with overplay it's still amazing. One of the defining hits of 2012 and it's easy to see why. Further comment: It's one of the songs in the Hottest 100 I go back to the least now but it was certainly one of the best 'pure pop' songs we got this decade, she never came close to bettering it. 89 Swedish House Mafia vs. Knife Party – Antidote 1,482,800 05/12/2011 [EOY #13, 2012] 46-x-21-15-5-13-16-1-6-9-13-16-16-17-24-22-25-29-23-30-39-45-45-49-x What I said: The first of three entries for Swedish House Mafia in this chart, they have had a massive year and it all started with "Antidote" - a hard hitting dance track helped by dubsteppers Knife Party (who also make good big room house so they're perfect for this song). The vocals are nice but don't add much to the song. After the disappointment that was "Save the World" - this tune brought the Mafia back with a bang - scoring their first #1 hit on my charts. They would score 2 more, both are still to come in the chart. Further comment: Still a stomper of a track, but they have two more still to come. 88 Nora En Pure – Trailblazer 1,482,800 05/01/2018 [EOY #06, 2018] 11-7-8-10-17-20-26-5-1-1-1-3-6-8-9-10-46-16-14-17-19-20-23-28-31-37-38-42-42-x What I said: Nora En Pure since breaking through in 2014 has racked up a fairly impressive chart history here though it wasn't until 2018 when she got her first #1 and biggest hit with the instrumental track 'Trailblazer' (it is also this year's highest instrumental). As you know I love it when a track makes prominent piano use and that is the centrepiece of this one, alongside a calm deep house backing. I really like this style of deep house, which we don't get that much of now aside from the likes of Nora and EDX, and this track particularly just really stands out to my ears. Further comment: It remains as her best track so far. 87 Lilly Wood & The Prick – Prayer in C (Robin Schulz Remix) 1,484,800 23/06/2014 [EOY #09, 2014] 43-8-5-1-1-4-3-3-2-3-3-1-1-2-3-4-10-18-28-33-46-43-50-x-41-x What I said: Prayer In C has a great chill house beat behind it and the lyrics are very interesting too. If there's any hate for this in the thread, don't think I could forgive you. Further comment: Unsurprisingly Lilly Wood & The Prick never had any other hits and Robin Schulz would never get a hit this big again either. His debut, 'Waves', is still yet to come. 86 Bingo Players – Rattle 1,489,700 13/02/2012 [EOY #28, 2013] 12-21-28-x-31-20-13-3-2-3-8-12-21-27-47-50-x What I said: Continuing the chart is former Dutch electro-house duo Bingo Players with their tune 'Rattle'. I originally loved it back in 2012 but its UK release gave it the push to #2 in my chart. It's a fun instrumental which drops not in the way you'd expect it to (well, these days a 'Rattle' esque drop is more common thanks to the massive success of the song). The name 'Rattle' is quite appropriate given the sound they use in the melody, which has a sharp flavour to it. Further comment: It is the top appearance for Bingo Players who would only get two more top 40s in my chart after this. 85 Zara Larsson – I Would Like 1,493,800 18/11/2016 [EOY #14, 2017] 40-23-15-5-5-21-12-1-1-3-3-3-3-5-7-9-10-10-5-9-6-6-6-11-19-27-47-x What I said: It was a big year for Zara Larsson which started off with 'I Would Like' jumping back in the top 10 at #1 in the first week of the year and eventually spending a massive 18 weeks in the top 10. In the tracking year only two songs spent more time there but once it left the top 10 it didn't have great longevity which just stops it from reaching the top 10 here. It was her second #1 following 'Lush Life' and spent two weeks at the top just as that did. What I love about this is the dance vibes, and after 'Ain't My Fault' it was great to have Zara go back into dance-pop. It's of course a song about sex and it doesn't hurt that she's very good looking. The song is so catchy though and even on a song like this she can show off how good her voice is. All these things just make her the best new pop star and it was great seeing this become a reasonably big chart smash in the UK, but not big enough to give us a proper video oops. Well hopefully she comes back soon this year as I'm excited for new material. Further comment: She seems to be on hiatus now after her last single bombed so it seems unlikely she'll ever top the three songs of hers in this Hottest 100 - this is the first of them. 84 CLiQ – Wavey (feat. Alika) 1,508,800 05/01/2018 [EOY #04, 2018] 13-8-4-3-5-6-5-3-3-3-2-4-7-10-12-11-50-13-23-27-33-37-42-x What I said: We heard from English DJ duo CLiQ earlier with 'Clap Clap' at #38, and now we get to 'Wavey', this year's #4. The song was their breakthrough managing to get R1 playlisting, a NOW feature and a UK top 50 chart position - very impressive for a previously unheard of dance act and the equally little known rapper Alika (though the song totally deserved even better). The song is a proper bouncy dance tune which very quickly grew on me once the new year began, eventually making #2 just behind 'Trailblazer' (EOY #6) but in the long run this just outdid it. The beat is brilliant, the hook is seriously catchy and Alika's raps are enjoyable. The whole song felt very unique in the commercial dance landscape for 2018 and for a good few months I couldn't get enough of it. Further comment: This still remains their best track with their other Top 1000 entry 'Clap Clap' just managing to sell two thirds of what this did in my chart (although that is still impressive). 83 Avicii – Addicted to You (feat. Audra Mae) 1,510,800 23/09/2013 [EOY #17, 2014] 5-29-x-43-26-23-22-x-12-1-8-8-5-3-5-4-9-20-33-42-x-19-x What I said: Despite being very short it's got great vocals and it weirdly works well having no big drop here, though we do get treated to some dance beats throughout. It's just Avicii at what he does best, making dance-pop songs. Further comment: It is only the third highest track from 'True' but still has an impressive sales total. 82 Avicii – Friend of Mine (feat. Vargas & Lagola) 1,519,900 18/08/2017 [EOY #45, 2017 / EOY #63, 2018] 2-2-2-3-3-3-3-7-9-10-10-23-22-37-x-44-45-18-20-31-x-10-29-21-30-38-48-x What I said: Avicii gave us six tracks on comeback EP but it was really three of them that stood out to me. This was one of them, entering at #2 only behind 'Without You' and would have easily been a #1 if he'd released the tracks one-by-one. It's got everything we love about the new Avicii, right from the acoustic guitar opening to the synth breakdown. It sounds like it would fit very well on the 'Stories' album and I'd say is even better than most of that album. Further comment: Likewise, this is the third highest track from its EP. 81 Alex Adair – Make Me Feel Better 1,520,300 29/12/2014 [EOY #06, 2015] 6-9-16-24-17-16-10-2-2-1-1-1-2-1-1-7-10-18-21-31-33-47-44-x What I said: Well isn't this song lush? Originally a BJSC entry in 2014 but it somehow passed me by, it wasn't until the start of last year I was really getting into it, and eventually it would dethrone 'Rumors' from #1. The uptempo tropical house vibes are just so great and I love the sample too, it's only a few lyrics but it really encapsulates the feel of the song well. Further comment: He had a few more hits in my chart but none half as big as this, one of the best to come out of that era. Was also great to see Disciples get another chart hit in On My Mind but sad that they've basically disappeared since, the little music they've released recently hasn't really 'grabbed' me as you've said. Nice to see Sail, Euphoria & Pompeii here as well!Quite sad as Disciples showed so much promise then they just kept releasing duds. They only had one hit with me following OMM ('Jealousy') and I don't revisit that one anymore anyway.

With Show Me Love vibes all over the track it makes for a great listen every time, I love deep house tunes like this. Further comment: Truly one of the best songs of the deep house era for me, neither of them came close to topping it. 79 John Gibbons – P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) 1,528,500 12/05/2017 [EOY #17, 2017] 29-23-5-4-5-5-8-6-6-7-9-9-9-8-14-15-19-22-31-46-x What I said: Managing to top his WILTY rework from last year, at #17 is John Gibbons with his PYT rework. He really does a great job of bringing these songs to life, and this one particularly is so fun and upbeat so it's a shame it stalled just outside the UK top 40 following a similar fate to 'Would I Lie'. Whoever's doing the vocals does a great MJ impersonation, and the production is brilliant. Further comment: It remains John's best song and judging by his more recent material he won't ever come close to beating it. 78 Watermät – Fade 1,529,900 02/12/2016 [EOY #05, 2017] 40-41-24-48-x-23-28-29-30-31-34-26-30-25-22-17-22-40-42-32-33-29-31-25-25-20-20-25-30-35-40-x What I said: Another one of my chart oddities here is that the fifth biggest selling song of the year reached no higher than #17, but it takes full advantage of its release date and amazing longevity. With 27 weeks spent in the top 40, only three songs spent longer within the tracking year. Its whirling synths, outstanding production and overall repeatability factor made this undoubtedly one of my tunes of the year though. Seemed to be only me who loves it this much though, y'all are sleeping on it. Well it is very much a grower anyway. This alongside 'Won't Stop' made Watermät one of the essential dance producers of the moment and I'm very excited for new music from him in 2018 if it is to come. If you loved 'Bullit' then deffo give this a play. Further comment: Still a great tune, and is Watermät's highest track here. His more recent material doesn't come close to it. 77 Porter Robinson – Language 1,532,000 02/07/2012 [EOY #03, 2012] 21-7-5-11-3-1-1-1-2-1-1-1-8-14-26-x-36-x-32-41-46-48-42-44-31-34-x-34-35-x What I said: One of THE songs of the summer right here - "Language" by Porter Robinson with guest vocals from Heather Bright (who has written for artists such as Ashley Tisdale, Britney Spears and Justin Bieber). The song is an electro house anthem that Ministry of Sound put on every compilation during the Summer - it finally got radio support in July and went top 10 in the UK the next month. I had heard of Porter before, through Knife Party's remix of his song "Unison", but this breakthrough hit is when I started to take notice of him. Further comment: It is Porter's highest track here, although this (and Love Too Deep) should both really be a fair bit higher considering they were EOY #03s! It also remains one of the best songs altogether to come from that era of dance. 76 Denis Kenzo & Kate Miles – Guide 1,534,300 14/09/2018 [EOY #108, 2018 / EOY #14, 2019] 38-35-24-27-25-30-12-7-10-11-12-12-18-30-x-29-24-25-27-27-27-31-32-36-38-x-46-43-41-32-37-x-46-32-35-41-x What I said: Another track that out-did its weekly peak for the tracking year, with it only reaching #18 although having peaked at #7 beforehand. It's a lovely vocal progressive trance song, again from Armada/ASOT where I get most of my trance discoveries from, and fairly similar to 'Empty Streets' which came 2 places below it although the drop has a bit more energy. Sadly, it became my biggest BJSC flop of the year, despite it being one of my personal favourites! Perhaps it was a bit too subtle or just in the wrong semi, and as the chart run says, it took a while for it to properly grow on me as well. Further comment: It is his highest track here as his numerous attempts to recreate it haven't been half as big. 75 Calvin Harris – Slide (feat. Frank Ocean & Migos) 1,536,300 03/03/2017 [EOY #07, 2017] 37-33-16-18-12-11-7-12-13-13-8-13-13-11-14-15-16-17-8-12-15-19-23-30-41-49-x What I said: We finally reach the highest of Calvin's five appearances in the Hot 100 and it is 'Slide' which peaked at #7 and is the tracking year's 7th biggest selling song. It has a thing for the number seven. It's a brilliant song anyway, even if it took its time. Debuting at only #37 it was seen as a disappointment for a Calvin Harris single but it slowly but surely worked its way up in my affections eventually spending 20 weeks in the top 20 including three separate appearances in the top 10. Yeah I wasn't initially sold with his transformation but damn this is a tune. Who knew Frank Ocean would somehow work on a dance track? He's still hella overrated by the way but yeah. Migos really improve it with their input too, their style works surprisingly well over a nu-funk beat and as for Calvin's input, I love those claps and the instrument that sounds like a distorted flute. This was a great start to a great 2017 for Calvin so it is fitting that it charts the highest in this countdown. Further comment: It ends up as the third-highest from the Funk era although I rate it roughly equally to the two still to come. 74 Pitbull – Give Me Everything (feat. Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer) 1,539,200 18/04/2011 [EOY #15, 2011] 30-40-34-36-40-22-4-1-1-2-1-1-7-12-20-20-20-16-27-19-17-28-25-30-36-42-47-41-39-50-x What I said: This is a great party anthem with a great hook from Ne-Yo after his disappointing Beautiful Monster and terrible follow up One In a Million. Afrojack, one of my favourite producers, makes the great club beat. Oh, and of course Pitbull raps in the song too. Further comment: One of the best tracks to come from the early 10s trend of club bangers with rappers, big shame Afrojack went downhill as the decade went on too with Pitbull and Ne-Yo also fizzling out. 73 Calvin Harris – Feels (feat. Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry & Big Sean) 1,546,200 23/06/2017 [EOY #11, 2017] 4-4-1-1-1-1-1-1-5-6-8-6-9-13-14-15-23-24-22-27-36-24-40-x What I said: If anyone owned the year of 2017 in my charts it was Calvin Harris, who had a constant top 40 presence all year long. Two of his songs make the year-end top 10 and this one just misses out. Deep into the funk wav era now I was very excited for what would become his new single, and a collaboration with three big name artists was always going to be intriguing, particularly Katy Perry who Calvin had not worked with before. It of course debuted very high, spending two weeks at #4 before the album release propelled it to #1 for six weeks. It's an incredibly catchy tune and you have to give Calvin a lot of credit for switching his style up and making it really work. The song is so groovy and it just has summer written all over it. All the parts work well, even Katy's odd pronunciation of the title which my mum thought was about fish. I am so looking forward to what Calvin has in store for us in 2018, because in 2017 he really cemented himself as my second favourite artist of all time. Further comment: And Calvin sandwiches Pitbull as his other entry of the section ends up here, also becoming the biggest track for both Big Sean and Katy Perry. 72 Martin Solveig – Places (feat. Ina Wroldsen) 1,547,800 16/12/2016 [EOY #08, 2017] 34-x-35-47-x-29-34-29-28-24-28-30-26-18-21-22-27-24-27-33-41-46-x What I said: As with Calvin and TheFatRat, we also see Martin Solveig remain in the top 10, after last year's #6 'Do It Right' he places at #8 with... 'Places'. Which is even more impressive considering the song only peaked at #18 in the weekly chart and this isn't even the only song to out-do its peak in the year-end chart. What really helps here is the strong repeatability factor, with the song being rather subtle it was initially seen as a disappointment compared to the very instant 'Do It Right' but eventually saw some UK chart success surprisingly which helped it rebound strongly in my chart. It was great to hear Ina's vocals on a dance track again too after 'How Deep...', and now with her on 'Breathe' perhaps she could appear highly in next year's chart too. The song doesn't have much to it lyrically but she really sells it, and more importantly the production is rather groovy and just further proof of Martin Solveig's brilliance. Further comment: Martin had a great decade which rewarded him with two entries in the Hottest 100, the other will come much later on. 71 The Pogues – Fairytale Of New York (feat. Kirsty MacColl) 1,585,400 29/11/2010 [EOY #245, 2017] 38-23-31-43-29-46-x-38-38-47-x-33-x-25-34-x-24-3-5-50-x-19-31-35-10-x-34-22-10-x-16-28-6-4-x-34-4-3-3-x-8-7-6-4-x-42-37-20-5-x What I said: Nothing really I need to say about this song as you all know it as the ultimate Christmas classic. It is in fact the only song to have entered my chart in every year since the chart's conception in 2010. Further comment: It is of course this which is the highest Christmas song in the countdown as it has been a big seasonal fave since the mid 00s. Ina Wroldsen) 1,589,200 08/12/2017 [EOY #03, 2018] 5-9-13-31-4-6-5-7-9-8-11-6-8-7-5-6-10-9-13-16-x-33-33-38-43-x-47-43-x What I said: Jax Jones doesn't quite manage to get two consecutive EOY #1s but 'Breathe' follows 'You Don't Know Me' into the EOY top 3, and also manages to out-do its peak position, having got stuck at #4 behind 'Lonely Together' (which is in the top 2) as well as 'Anywhere' (EOY #34) and 'Gorecki' (EOY #15). After the brilliant 'Instruction' I was keen to see if Jax Jones could completely wow me again for a third consecutive time and indeed he did as 'Breathe', despite a shaky start due to the Christmas period, eventually became his 2nd best selling song in Thermo's hot hits. It's another brilliant example of how well commercial dance can be done without completely pandering to Spotify, with a great dance beat. Ina Wroldsen's amazing voice and songwriting very much help this too, I'd love to hear her on more dance tracks but I'll take what we can get (this is her third appearance in the EOY top 10 so she must be doing something right), even the dum-dum-da-da's are infectious and overall it's just a really well made track. Further comment: It is Jax Jones' 2nd biggest track here behind the obvious favourite. 69 Avicii – Silhouettes (feat. Salem Al Fakir) 1,592,900 30/04/2012 [EOY #08, 2012] 1-1-2-6-7-6-7-14-21-24-14-28-20-30-23-28-35-17-26-27-24-48-x-14-28-48-x What I said: Moving further into the top 10, at #8 we have Avicii for the second year in a row! Last year "Levels" finished at #8 but would be much higher now if I did a retrospective chart for 2011. Let's be honest, Avicii was NEVER going to top "Levels". But he did do a very good job at following it up, with the lovely "Silhouettes" featuring uncredited vocals from Salem Al Fakir. "Silhouettes" manages to be more chilled than the hard hitting "Levels" but still has that magic that is common in Avicii productions. A very nice dancefloor tune that topped my chart for 2 weeks in April/May but kept in my heart during the summer. Further comment: A good showing for this, and we won't be seeing from him in the next few sections as his 8 remaining entries are all in the top 40. 68 Era Istrefi – Bonbon 1,594,900 26/02/2016 [EOY #03, 2016] 24-22-21-17-15-20-32-44-x-50-x-39-40-34-44-36-6-6-7-5-5-9-12-16-11-9-16-27-33-35-x-45-x What I said: I definitely didn't expect this to end up in my top 3 of the year, but it really is a massive fun bop. Sung by the Albanian equivalent of Rihanna this was introduced to me through BJSC where it was eventually voted the best entry of the year, though it was post-contest when it really grew on me, hanging in the middle section of the chart for a while until the English version was released which shot it straight into the top 10! Eventually peaking at #5, it becomes one of a few songs that chart higher in the EOY than their weekly peak. Unfortunately the iconic video is only available for the original, and the remake never got given a commercial push. Why I like it so much, well it's just a great sexy dancey pop song, and beats Rihanna at her own game this year charting higher than all her efforts in the EOY. Unsurprisingly she ended up being another big 1HW anyhow. 67 Calvin Harris – Rollin (feat. Future & Khalid) 1,603,300 19/05/2017 [EOY #10, 2017] 2-2-2-1-2-6-10-7-8-11-10-11-12-18-30-29-25-28-32-34-35-37-33-34-49-x What I said: Perhaps an odd choice of Calvin Harris song to put in my top 10 as it was only ever a promotional single (though it was his third-best performing song of the album on Spotify above 'Heatstroke' so at least there is that) but for me it is up there with his very best. We got a little taster of this a week prior to its release and ever since then I knew it was going to be something special. With Khalid being a rising urban star it made good sense for Calvin to include him in this project and he does a brilliant job here, his voice sounds so much mature than his actual age. The hook about rollin' on the freeway makes this an excellent driving song too and Future's verses compliment the production very nicely too. The instrumental parts are the best in the entire album and the song as a whole is so infectious. It sounds like it would age really nicely too. Further comment: It is the biggest track here from the Funk album. We'll be seeing some of the songs that preceded it very shortly. 66 MK & Becky Hill – Piece of Me 1,606,100 04/03/2016 [EOY #02, 2016] 14-4-1-1-2-3-4-6-4-6-9-7-9-10-9-12-13-19-22-18-16-13-23-23-30-32-25-30-29-37-40-40-x What I said: MK and Becky Hill are both amazing in their respective areas of music, so when they got together for a house anthem I was definitely going to love it, and it's now my favourite MK song, beating his amazing 'Look Right Through' remix which I thought he'd never top. It's effortlessly produced and all six minutes of it are absolutely brilliant (there was a radio edit, but I prefer the full version). Becky has such a great voice as usual but it particularly stands out here, very much fitting the lyrical theme of getting over a break-up. It's also the second time she is the guest vocalist on an EOY #2, following 'Gecko (Overdrive)' being the #2 song of 2014. Further comment: MK has a two to come, and Becky still has 'Gecko'. 65 Route 94 – My Love (feat. Jess Glynne) 1,614,200 21/10/2013 [EOY #06, 2014] 37-x-25-37-23-37-36-35-10-2-2-2-2-2-3-3-7-10-18-26-38-34-x What I said: Route 94 spent five weeks at #2 with this, which is the record for consecutive weeks at #2. All were behind Mr. Probz 'Waves', so it was quite unlucky. Anyway it's another house with piano track, this one is deeper than I Wanna Feel though and better as well, deep house at its finest really. An absolutely banging tune. Further comment: Route 94 had a few more hits but this was easily his biggest and best. We'll be seeing Jess again later though. 64 DJ Licious – I Hear You Calling 1,616,500 02/06/2017 [EOY #15, 2017] 32-26-21-26-26-16-15-8-5-3-3-6-7-7-5-6-7-8-8-7-8-11-20-31-43-37-x What I said: DJ Licious broke out with this brilliance which ended up becoming another hit for me in BJSC, becoming my third top 10 hit of the year. It's exactly the type of dance I love and would like to see more of in the charts (sadly this is one of the many dance bangers that never went near the chart). With power vocals and great production it was always going to be a hit in my chart, even if it took a little while to really get going. It's just great to have a dance song that's really unashamedly dancey, and basically a modern version of the 90s diva house. Further comment: Easily DJ Licious' best, although he has been a semi-consistent hitmaker in my chart ever since. 63 Martin Jensen – Solo Dance 1,625,000 27/01/2017 [EOY #04, 2017] 33-34-15-18-23-20-6-5-8-8-9-9-7-6-7-5-6-7-8-10-14-18-23-33-39-x What I said: Martin Jensen had a great 2017 getting himself a worldwide massive hit with 'Solo Dance', though he remains a one-hit wonder both in the UK and in this chart as follow-up 'Wait' suffered from being too similar to this and not half as great. With lyrics about wanting to party alone it's quite relatable and the production really pulls off the generic commercial tropical house sound well, it's so upbeat and catchy and so unsurprisingly ends up very high on my chart. You can't deny a tune like this. Further comment: Another 1HW here as this sadly couldn't be re-created very well. 62 Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – Thrift Shop (feat. Wanz) 1,633,500 26/11/2012 [EOY #12, 2013] 35-26-1-3-12-12-14-42-26-28-27-28-38-31-33-23-37-29-27-14-10-16-27-40-29-42-29-32-19-32-34-36-36-45-47-x What I said: At #12 is a song that originally made my #1 in 2012, but it continued to stay in my charts for another 6 months, helped by its increased popularity in the UK. It's a fun song about how you don't need to wear big brands to look cool when you can save $$ at the thrift shop, an unusual choice of subject for a rap song considering most rappers love to brag about how much they have, but songs like this and 'Royals' are needed in the charts just to show that not everyone needs the rich lifestyle. Further comment: Their biggest hit here as they went downhill rather quickly after their 2 big hits, though of course Macklemore ended up going back to #1 years later thanks to Rudimental & Jess Glynne. 61 Swedish House Mafia – Greyhound 1,636,800 19/03/2012 [EOY #02, 2012] 1-2-1-1-1-1-3-3-1-2-9-29-44-48-35-26-20-35-29-34-37-46-x-33-22-46-41-49-x What I said: Following Cee-Lo Green "F**k You (Forget You)" and Rihanna "S&M", Swedish House Mafia take the Silver Medal for my EOY chart with this amazing instrumental hit. It is hard to describe and write commentary for this, thanks to it having no lyrics. It is just a great song with a beat that gets you dancing, lots of bass and a nice hook. The surprising change of hook in the middle of the song really adds to it too, before going back into the main hook but with a beefier bass. Also my favourite version of this song is the 7 minute one. The Swedish House Mafia project will be sadly missed by me and many other people. Three superstar DJs on one record = amazingness. It would've been fitting for SHM to be my EOY #1 on their last year of producing songs, but another song released in September got in the way of that. John Martin's vocals work very well on the song, with inspired lyrics - not typical for a dance song! And of course the Mafia impress with their beats, the drop gets everyone on their feet with hands in the air! However if John's vocals are enough proof that it's not just another generic dance song, we get further inspiration from the second buildup - that lovely synth in the background and then the use of an acoustic guitar, all this to get ready for when the beat drops! The extended mix of this is even better than the radio edit, if you haven't already I would recommend listening to the 7 minute version of this song. Further comment: This just narrowly beats 'Greyhound' in the end then to be their highest track, and it's still their most recent single to this day (annoyingly their reunion is yet to produce one). 59 Nightcrawlers – Push the Feeling On (MK Remix) 1,646,700 24/11/2014 {DJ S.K.T Remix} – MK remix released 1995 36-49-x What I said: Nothing. Further comment: Discovered from downloading a funky house compilation off iTunes in 2011, I soon realised this was the inspiration behind 'Hotel Room Service' and that this was much better. It likely would've contended for #1 at the time, if I had let it be chart eligible. It ends up as the highest charting song here not from this decade [with the DJ S.K.T. remix only making a brief impact in 2014]. 58 Calvin Harris – My Way 1,647,500 23/09/2016 [EOY #62, 2016 / EOY #46, 2017] 2-1-2-2-1-1-1-1-1-1-2-8-8-31-21-7-9-10-13-12-17-23-27-38-43-38-x What I said: Calvin had such a good year in 2016 for how little he released, and two out of three making it to #1 in my chart isn't at all bad. This one spent 7 weeks at #1, one more than TIWYCF although I do prefer that, this was just lucky to have barely any competition. Such a banger though, Calvin just keeps on giving. I just hope he either gives us an album in 2017 or more frequent singles though, I can't do with just three every year!!! Further comment: Well Calvin did give us an album and then subsequently we had a very dry 2019. This is still a lot better than it gets credit for. 57 Calvin Harris & Rihanna – This Is What You Came For 1,649,300 06/05/2016 [EOY #05, 2016] 1-1-1-1-1-1-3-3-3-2-2-2-2-8-7-10-10-7-11-12-24-23-27-36-37-42-49-x What I said: Amazingly it took this long for Calvin Harris to get his first #1 hit as the lead performer, but as soon as 'This' was released I knew it would go straight in at number one. It then proceeded to spend a quarter of the year in the top 3 including six weeks at #1, and nearly half the year in the top 40 making it Calvin's best performing single to date. It fully deserves its place as one of the best five songs of 2016, with its longevity proving that it wasn't simply all hype no substance. Of course with it being a Calvin and Rihanna collab, both being amongst my favourite performers of all time, my expectations were sky high... and it delivered. People are too quick to criticise the song for the excessive use of the 'ooh-ooh-ooh'ing, but it really works in the context of this song and I love how Calvin uses Rihanna's great voice as an instrument in the drop. The drop is great too, with such a big buildup you could easily expect another all-out breakdown in the style of 'Summer' but instead it goes for a slightly more minimal approach, but creeping up on you as it progresses. Which makes it amazing for repeated listens, eventually getting 100 of those. Further comment: And this other track from the time ends up with near-identical sales, though I'd say I prefer this. Another Rihanna & Calvin collab will appear later on. 56 Gareth Emery & Standerwick – Saving Light (feat. Haliene) 1,660,600 17/02/2017 [EOY #12, 2017] 1-1-1-1-1-2-3-4-5-9-7-8-7-12-16-17-22-19-25-32-39-40-46-45-x-19-23-41-x What I said: 'Saving Light' was of course the first song I sent to BJSC that actually won the contest, so it will always be a special song for that. It is surprisingly emotional for a dance song, even for trance being one of the more ~emosh sub-genres, moreso if you're also watching the music video - created in association with anti-bullying charity Ditch the Label. It's such a euphoric trance song that gets everything right, with an intense buildup, strong vocal and melody and a drop that does not disappoint. It made such a good first impression that it arrived straight at #1, a feat that was only managed by four songs this year (also 'Symphony', 'Instruction' and 'Without You'), all the more impressive for a non-chart act. Further comment: Gareth's biggest track of the decade, although 'Amber Sun' may well have overtook it by now. 55 Snoop Dogg – Sweat (David Guetta Remix) 1,664,600 21/03/2011 [EOY #16, 2011] 11-4-10-10-5-6-11-12-11-16-18-8-7-15-10-10-19-24-28-28-32-37-48-45-39-46-x What I said: David Guetta proves that he can turn anything into a massive hit here. And this time, he's remixed Snoop Dogg's "Sweat" (I haven't actually heard the original non remix version). This is so amazing, Snoop Dogg's vocal really fits the instrumental and it's great to see him do something that isn't hip-hop for a change. This is David Guetta's highest entry. Further comment: It ends up as David's 2nd highest of the decade. 54 Example – Changed the Way You Kiss Me 1,681,800 02/05/2011 [EOY #17, 2011] 24-29-23-12-6-12-5-1-3-5-9-9-13-13-17-21-33-29-23-27-33-47-x What I said: Example made an excellent comeback single here with "Changed..." getting both a UK #1 and a number one on my chart. The production on this is better than any other single he's done, the song builds up and up and when it drops it's a massive drop. Further comment: I'd say it's my fave of his, although it gets narrowly beat by 'Stay Awake' here as that got a handful of extra plays. 53 Maroon 5 – Moves Like Jagger (feat. Christina Aguilera) 1,683,600 15/08/2011 [EOY #24, 2011] 23-41-x-41-5-2-7-7-5-5-8-10-19-26-31-30-41-x-20-20-32-30-36-44-46-49-x What I said: I first heard it on R2 and I didn't expect it to be that successful, but I found it catchy enough to chart it at #23. It later returned to my top 10 after surprising everyone, getting 7 weeks at #2 - which is more impressive than getting 6 weeks at #2 with a week at #1 in the middle for me. On my chart it only had 1 week at #2 but I love the song a lot - Christina isn't one of my favourite singers ever but her part adds to it and the production is more up-to date. Further comment: This really shouldn't be quite this high but it was very enjoyable and miles better than what Maroon 5 were to become in the later half of the decade. 52 Example – Stay Awake 1,690,700 25/07/2011 [EOY #20, 2011] 31-31-28-9-20-16-2-2-3-4-12-16-26-25-22-41-38-40-31-37-42-49-x What I said: This was his second number one in the UK but missed out on my chart. I'm sure he doesn't mind as it has a much better chart run here This song is produced by Nero and has some dubstep in it. Example's rap is great in this, the only disappointment is he does the same rap twice but on the good side that makes it the catchy song it is. This era has really turned Example into one of my favourite artists of the now, the first era was good but nothing special. Further comment: This and 'Changed' ended up being his peak commercially and for me. 51 Future – Mask Off 1,699,500 31/03/2017 29-16-13-8-10-11-16-15-17-18-20-18-20-19-27-20-19-18-16-14-19-20-23-20-26-30-26-30-30-30-36-x What I said: Now I never really got Future, his style of over-autotune mumble rapping with drab production never interested me, but this... is proper amazing. With an immensely catchy hook, an amazing flute sample and all-round great production, this quickly grew on me and refused to age for quite a while. The lyrics are basically standard for the genre, with Future bragging about how rich he is and all the drugs he's doing, and it's not really something I should love, but I can't deny a song this good. Definitely a standout of the recent takeover of US rap. Further comment: It ends up as being the biggest trap hit of the decade by some way, "mumble rap" (which I'm not usually like) really peaked with this song tbh. Solo Dance remains an absolute tune though, glad that was as successful as it was! Saving Light was a brilliant BJSC entry from you also, such an emotional track with a brilliant music video, and Change The Way You Kiss Me is a brilliant track from the start of the year as well.

This song, about breaking up with your girlfriend, has a great retro "F**k You" vibe - however the clean version is better (not many songs where I can say this). The Lil Wayne feature is a bit POINTLESS but Andre does a great rap in the song, where has he been these days? This was an instant hit with me thanks to the catchiness and attitude of it. Further comment: Although a great song this is one I don't go back to a lot these days and Lloyd never had another hit after this. 49 Rihanna – What's My Name? (feat. Drake) 1,720,500 08/11/2010 [EOY #21, 2010 / EOY #09, 2011] 37-3-4-2-2-4-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-3-8-10-5-5-9-15-17-20-27-25-21-23-24-29-41-46-49-x What I said: There were complaints about her performance on TXF, but I didn't complain! Rihanna is the Queen Of Pop right now and the biggest international popstar in the world. This song goes back to her original R&B style, after dancepop songs like Who's That Chick and Only Girl. I loved this song well into the year, giving it 5 weeks at #1 in January. The X Factor performance really made me love it much more. Drake's verse is amazing too, yes I do love the "square root of 69" line. I do love Rihanna for her pop-dance songs but when she makes a sexy R&B one like this it's amazing too. This is such a Rihanna classic. Further comment: Definitely one of Rihanna's best songs and helped cement her as one of my all time fave singers. 48 Zara Larsson – Lush Life 1,724,600 18/12/2015 [EOY #08, 2016] 35-x-21-5-3-5-5-3-5-2-3-1-1-2-7-9-7-13-24-26-26-29-34-40-46-42-39-x-35-x What I said: Another huge worldwide hit here, I'm still commercial to an extent so there's a few of these in the top 10. 'Lush Life' really is pop perfection though and Zara Larsson (or her writing team) may well be the saviour of pop music in 2016, having released a number of great tunes but especially this. It's got a great catchy hook and it's very upbeat, with clear influences from dance music. She's got the personality of a pop star and she can really sing too, so it was great watching this become a global megasmash. It took its time but eventually made #1 in the chart for two weeks before being kicked off by 'Piece of Me'. Further comment: I guess this will always be Zara's best solo track now but again what a song. She'll be back with Clean Bandit in the top 40. 47 Weiss – Feel My Needs 1,724,800 11/05/2018 [EOY #08, 2018] 42-24-17-13-14-19-16-14-20-16-23-12-13-14-13-8-9-9-5-4-2-2-4-6-5-8-11-14-23-20-40-49-x-31-33-48-x What I said: Following 2017's sleeper hit 'You're Sunshine', English DJ Weiss came back with a bigger and better tune in 2018 with 'Feel My Needs', one of Radio 1's favourite dance tracks of the year and also one of mine as it lands comfortably in the top 10 here despite having an incomplete chart run. Sometimes all a house song really needs is a catchy piano riff and a short vocal phrase because that's what makes this one so good (the attempt to give it additional vocals didn't work too well for me). I also love the short synthy breakdown in the middle but it's the main hook that really sells it. Whilst I was waiting ages for a new MK song to drop this really did well at filling in his place and becoming a big summer (and autumn) anthem, and this is honestly better than 'Back & Forth' too but '17' is still yet to appear. Further comment: One of my fave dance anthems of recent times, and that chart run we have to stan too. 46 Daft Punk – Get Lucky (feat. Pharrell Williams) 1,740,000 22/04/2013 [EOY #02, 2013] 1-1-1-3-2-1-1-1-2-1-3-6-4-18-6-9-15-12-15-29-26-45-x What I said: At #2 is a disco-pop song from Daft Punk. When I first heard the preview my thoughts were 'is this really the best Daft Punk can do after 8 years since their last studio album?' but the song was released in its 4 minute edit and I loved it. The album version (6 minutes) however is even better and the version I prefer to listen to. It has a very catchy guitar riff, which was probably Nile Rodger's contribution to the song so yay him. It also contains vocals by Pharrell who returned to relevance with this song, plus, most importantly, the return of the robotic vocals! All those parts come together for a funky song that has a 70s disco feel but weirdly sounds very relevant too. So congratulations guys for being at #2. Only 1 song released this year has been better than yours. Further comment: Daft Punk are still yet to follow this up aside from their two songs with The Weeknd, so I just hope they're cooking up something extra special again. New material next year if we're going 8 years between albums again? 45 Kygo – Firestone (feat. Conrad Sewell) 1,744,000 08/12/2014 [EOY #04, 2015] 2-2-3-4-3-6-8-12-21-21-17-13-17-19-22-6-7-6-9-11-17-20-26-30-41-36-39-48-x-45-48-x What I said: What a great song this is. Kygo had already done some cool remixes so it was about time he gave us what he had for an original release. And he really impressed. It has everything I love about him, with the subtle verses which build up so nicely to end up becoming a brilliant drop. With tropical house being new back then I found the production so fresh, and the slow pace of the song really works too. It seems that Kygo will never be able to top this but like KSHMR he's continued to bring the goods and remain the best in his genre. Further comment: Kygo has been semi-consistent ever since but this will always be his greatest hit for me. 44 TheFatRat – The Calling (feat. Laura Brehm) 1,750,000 08/04/2016 [EOY #04, 2016] 2-2-3-3-5-5-4-5-3-4-9-11-18-20-17-17-14-12-13-13-16-15-20-22-20-22-30-38-43-x What I said: Now this is really brilliant. I was very hyped for what TheFatRat would release after 'Monody' and as it turned out it was another collab with Laura Brehm except she'd take a more central role to the song this time. She's got an amazing voice which really fits this type of electronic music and I love the doubling effect used in the chorus, giving her voice a real heavenly feel. The production is spectacular too, even with the song following a more typical song structure than 'Monody' it feels like just as much effort has gone into it, with the atmospheric space feel and it building up so effortlessly. It's also got such a big drop too, everything about this is big. Instantly debuting at number two, and eventually spending 24 weeks in my top 20 (one of the longest top 20 runs ever), it certainly deserves a place in this top five. Further comment: My personal fave song of TheFatRat's, although he does have an entry to come in the top 40. 43 LMFAO – Sexy And I Know It 1,756,000 26/09/2011 [EOY #29, 2011] 42-17-2-4-7-8-7-9-11-14-17-33-32-26-26-11-13-16-20-31-43-29-24-37-45-30-40-42-44-50-x What I said: Everyone was shocked to find out LMFAO missed out on another #1 on my chart - but I much prefer it to Champagne Showers. It's a fun novelty track that lots of people make Facebook statuses about. I can see why lots of people hate it but for me it's one of the best songs of its type and LMFAO never make a bad video - this and PRA being my favourite videos of the year. Further comment: It's a good bit of fun but like the Lloyd song hasn't aged as well as the other tracks sitting around it in the rundown. 42 Omi – Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn Remix) 1,758,300 01/12/2014 [EOY #03, 2015] 7-11-6-2-1-2-4-6-9-10-6-12-21-x-28-29-22-5-2-4-6-7-7-11-16-18-20-24-24-19-25-31-32-49-30-46-x What I said: This year's bronze medalists are Omi and Felix Jaehn, and this song is also the highest UK #1 in the EOY meaning for the first time in the history of my EOY chart, the EOY #1 is NOT a UK #1. This is such a fun song anyway, plus I love the sax in it. It was amazing to see this get so huge everywhere too, I thought it would be a hit but not the 2nd biggest song of the year!! The song also made me properly notice Felix Jaehn too, and he's since released some more great songs. As for Omi, not so much oops. Further comment: Omi never managed to get another real hit unsurprisingly ('Hula Hoop' just scraped in my weekly top 40 but fell fast). It's an undeniable banger of a tune and deservedly became the duo's breakout tune. It also became the first top 10 hit I got in BJSC so yay for that. It really was a twist on future house and with a hook so catchy and a drop so good it was something I could instantly get behind. It was of course the commercial follow-up to 'Cola' that CamelPhat remixed, having been originally just Au/Ra's song. It's a great song about her anxiety, a fairly relatable topic that we don't get many pop songs about. Although I'm not so keen on it in original form, CamelPhat vastly improve it with their impressive house production, which really adds to the mood of the song. They're a real breath of fresh air in the commercial dance music scene at the moment so it was great to see this become a real sleeper hit, and hopefully 'Breathe' can give them a third top 40 hit (and it'll almost certainly appear in my 2019 EOY). As for Au/Ra, she's impressive and hopefully she features on some more dance tracks as she was great on both this and 'Darkside'. Further comment: It is CamelPhat's top appearance. Sadly nothing ever became of Au/Ra after this, wasn't keen on most of her follow-up material. 39 Yolanda Be Cool & D Cup – We No Speak Americano 1,830,800 30/08/2010 [EOY #01, 2010] 3-3-3-7-9-15-20-25-35-28-33-35-36-41-44-x-50-x-38-22-31-44-x What I said: This is song the of the year!! It's a real shame that the song will be known as a One Hit Wonder officially not for what a great song it is. Further comment: I really went all out with the commentaries in 2010 clearly, only two sentences for the #1!! It was so unique amongst the rest of the chart hits of the time and of the whole decade with its swing feel and the lyrics in Neapolitan. This would've spent a few weeks at #1 had I joined Buzzjack earlier so you can pretend this is a few places higher. 38 Christina Perri – Jar of Hearts 1,840,700 11/07/2011 [EOY #10, 2011] 1-2-6-6-5-4-5-3-4-10-13-36-46-32-27-19-15-11-14-19-24-31-45-x-47-x-43-x What I said: Forget ADELE, this is one of the most beautiful ballads I've ever heard - I loved it so much in the first week it debuted at #1, something that not many songs have done in 2011. (there is another #1 debut higher up the chart) Christina really deserves a place in my top 10 of the year, it has 140 plays on my iTunes and it's just amazing. If my chart wasn't so biased towards dance music this may be even higher. The follow up 'A Thousand Years' doesn't have the emotion that this has and I went off that quickly. Further comment: Don't think it should be as high as top 40 but I really loved this at the time and it's definitely the best track we got out of the trend of piano ballads we had back then (which I'm surprised isn't making more of a comeback now after Lewis Capaldi). 37 Mark Knight – Yebisah 1,866,100 09/09/2016 [EOY #45, 2016 / EOY #26, 2017] 45-39-43-26-5-3-3-5-6-6-6-8-9-19-27-x-19-18-15-14-20-23-9-6-11-15-20-36-43-44-36-39-41-43-x What I said: Surprisingly Mark Knight hadn't made any chart impact for me before this year but when he released club anthem 'Yebisah' that was of course going to get a lot of love here. It's a full-on house instrumental with a simple piano riff but it's all executed perfectly. It took a while but eventually spent nine weeks in the top 10. If you love a bangin' choon take a listen. Further comment: Mark Knight remains a 1HW in my chart as he went back to releasing duds. As you may have not heard this before here's a YT link if you're interested, it's definitely one of the best house anthems of the decade for me. 36 Sigala – Sweet Lovin' (feat. Bryn Christopher) 1,875,000 23/10/2015 [EOY #10, 2015 / EOY #14, 2016] 7-5-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-2-6-13-14-10-17-11-8-18-34-27-31-41-49-x What I said: Starting off the top 10 is Sigala, who would probably be a huge contender for the #1 if the song wasn't released so close to the end of the year. As it is, a fair bit of its chart run will spill over to 2016. It is such a good tune though and I'm still not bored of it as evidenced by its current chart run. It's just so uplifting and does everything 'Easy Love' does better. The vocal is really powerful too which I love and to be honest this would've sounded really good as a summer jam, but we need winter floorfillers too so yay. Further comment: With one of the longest ever runs at #1 (11 weeks to save you from counting) I'm surprised it's only just made it in the top 40 but it's done very well anyhow. Sigala ain't ever topping this absolute tune. 35 Calvin Harris – Bounce (feat. Kelis) 1,880,400 09/05/2011 [EOY #06, 2011] 11-20-8-8-15-15-4-2-2-2-3-4-4-6-12-12-13-16-20-27-33-35-43-40-35-48-47-48-50-43-x What I said: I always loved Calvin Harris, but when he chose this as his comeback single I instantly fell in love. Such amazing production on this. It also features the vocal talent of Kelis, I was disappointed with Acapella but this now becomes my favourite song ever by both Kelis and Calvin Harris. The instrumental chorus is the best part of the song and this for me has put Calvin right up there with my favourite artists of the now. "Bounce" was very unlucky to miss number one, Pitbull and Christina Perri stopped Calvin from getting #1 but Calvin has beaten both acts in the year end chart. Further comment: For the longest time this was my fave Calvin Harris-led track ever, it's been overtaken by another track of his yet to come in this section but it still holds up and I feel is quite underrated in his discography. 34 offaiah – Trouble 1,893,200 29/07/2016 [EOY #15, 2016 / EOY #71, 2017] 24-6-4-3-3-3-1-1-1-2-1-1-2-2-2-2-3-4-6-10-15-47-x-17-23-22-23-24-29-44-x What I said: This really should be in the top 10 but unfortunately the cut-off date was the week this song finally left the top 5. It's definitely one of my big faves of the second half of the year. From the moment I first listened to this properly I had a good feeling it would be a future number one in my chart, and it did get there of course spending five weeks at #1, which would've been ten if Calvin's 'My Way' never got released - very impressive. It has such an insane and unique drop, in fact everything about this is amazing - even the sampled Charlie Puth vocals, and I don't particularly enjoy him! Unsurprisingly this got a lot of Radio 1 airplay and it even made the UK top 40 for a few weeks although peaking criminally low (#29!). Further comment: Offaiah had a solid follow up in 'Run' (#123 in this chart) but afterwards never came close to the quality of this tune. 33 Chase & Status – Hitz (Remix) (feat. Tinie Tempah & Wretch 32) 1,897,800 16/05/2011 [EOY #11, 2011] 31-x-17-29-36-x-21-14-14-8-5-3-1-1-1-6-16-25-20-29-31-27-43-48-49-x What I said: I never thought Chase & Status would better "Blind Faith", but then they released this. Originally with just Tinie Tempah, they remixed it with a proper chorus and Wretch 32. It took ages for this to grow on me but when it did I really loved it. It's one of my most played songs on iTunes ever with over 150 plays to date. And yes I do like Wretch 32's part in the remix. Further comment: 'Blind Faith' may have aged better but this was by some way the bigger hit then, and remains the biggest for C&S, helped by Tinie who was also a fave at the time and he's really great in this. We will see from Tinie again in the next section. 32 Clean Bandit – Rather Be (feat. Jess Glynne) 1,899,300 13/01/2014 [EOY #04, 2014] 18-9-5-3-1-1-2-2-3-4-4-3-9-16-21-20-25-29-30-50-48-46-x What I said: Everyone seems to love this and clearly I do as well. The strings sounds really lovely with the electronic production, and the singing and song itself are brilliant too. No-one can deny the amazingness of this really! Further comment: This was my absolute fave of theirs for the longest time but they managed to better it once. It is however still Jess Glynne's best performance. 31 Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa – One Kiss 1,931,800 13/04/2018 [EOY #02, 2018] 1-1-4-1-1-2-3-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-5-5-4-7-8-8-13-18-23-26-38-x-30-41-x What I said: After a lowkey start to the year with the minor hits 'The Weekend' and 'Nuh Ready Nuh Ready', Calvin proved all his doubters wrong and casually dropped the biggest song of the year (in the UK) with 'One Kiss'. It also gave him his biggest ever hit in Thermo's hot hits [as a lead artist], not an easy feat considering the numerous hits and 'million sellers' he's had before, and it lands at #2 in the EOY; and is easily my favourite song that was released in 2018. I was so excited to see that one of the better singers of the moment Dua Lipa was to feature on Calvin's next single as they seemed like a perfect fit for each other particularly after the great dance-pop smash 'New Rules', and the song couldn't have premiered at a better time - it was during my family skiing holiday and it will thus be a lovely reminder of that time - and of course I loved it so much that it went straight in at #1, spending four weeks there (interrupted by 'Levels' in week three) - Jess Glynne then kicked it off for a week before Disclosure's comeback which held the song at #2 for a long while. The song felt to refreshing in the chart anyhow, and it was great to see Calvin Harris switch his style up again (though I did love his last era) because I love the housey groove this has and Dua is perfect for this song too. The song doesn't have a big meaty drop but it doesn't need to, it's just a vibe and one that particularly worked for the hot summer we had, but the song sounds amazing anytime clearly, it's still in my chart this week too. I really hope we get a whole album of these types of subtle bops because I'm really loving his output at the moment and I'd love to give him an EOY #1 sometime but it's not even close and there was only one song that was ever really in contention this year... [Avicii - Lonely Together] Further comment: Still my favourite track from 2018, I don't see Calvin topping this anytime soon and especially not with his Love Regenerator project. March 12, 20205 yr Author Piece of Me was a #1 for me although one of my shortest-lived chart hits ever, I think the time elapsed between hearing it on R1 Dance and the music video coming out dampened my appetite for it sadly. Solo Dance remains an absolute tune though, glad that was as successful as it was! Saving Light was a brilliant BJSC entry from you also, such an emotional track with a brilliant music video, and Change The Way You Kiss Me is a brilliant track from the start of the year as well. There's not much I can say about this song that hasn't already been said, it was the biggest underground club hit of the year, then months later it made the UK's official #1. It's already an iconic song in the dance scene, which has inspired tons of rip-offs. Some people have gone off it because of overplay, or because it's seen as 'cool' to dislike mainstream songs - but I still love it. It's amazing and if this is what Martin can do at 17 then I have high hopes for him in the future. The drop in this is a big *.* moment imo. Further comment: Martin never managed to top this banger but remained consistent throughout the rest of the decade and he may even still be getting hits in my chart this time next decade too. 29 Avicii – Hey Brother (feat. Dan Tyminski) 1,957,500 23/09/2013 [EOY #31, 2013 / EOY #05, 2014] 12-28-x-1-1-1-1-2-1-1-1-3-2-6-9-10-3-14-21-36-30-35-45-x-7-37-46-48-x What I said: The song basically gives us more of the country-dance sound that we loved from 'Wake Me Up' (still to come). Once again Avicii picks a good vocalist, and unlike Guetta/Harris he doesn't go for whoever is popular but for who suits the song best. The lyrics are quite simple and easy to learn, and the rhythm in the verses definitely gives off those country vibes. Then Avicii gives us what he's known for with his melodic instrumental break, just so much positive vibes coming off this song. Further comment: The second highest track from 'True' here and very much a standout in his discography. 28 Alexandra Stan – Mr. Saxobeat 1,989,100 14/03/2011 [EOY #07, 2011] 21-x-44-4-2-2-3-3-4-4-5-5-6-14-19-21-21-16-14-14-18-16-24-28-39-x What I said: OK we're now at the point in the chart where I can't stop saying how amazing these songs are. Mr Saxobeat is THE Eurodance SMASH of the YEAR. Who thought I would love a song from Romania so much? Well I do, this song does what it's meant to do and makes me "move like a freak". Unfortunately this song missed the #1 spot thanks to LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem" which is still to come. Further comment: She had a few more minor hits in my chart afterwards but nothing compared to this, the best track we got out of that mini-trend. 27 Labrinth – Earthquake (feat. Tinie Tempah) 2,001,000 26/09/2011 [EOY #05, 2011] 45-2-3-3-3-1-1-3-7-3-4-7-9-14-24-30-21-38-33-42-49-x-50-x What I said: Just when I was thinking 'whatever happened to Labrinth, he had a good song last year with Let The Sun Shine but he could do better I guess', he released the second single from his upcoming album Electronic Earth, "Earthquake". And it was amazing. Featuring hot UK rapper Tinie Tempah it spent 9 weeks in the top 5 including 2 at #1. This song proves that Labrinth can do amazing productions (that beat is amazing) and the middle 8 is amazing, the part where everything goes quiet then Tinie Tempah makes an earthquake with a brilliant rap. The only bad thing that's happened to this song is losing out the chart battle against Professor Green. Further comment: Such a shame only a few years later Labrinth would be completely uninteresting when he produced this proper tune, also the highest appearance here for Tinie. 26 TheFatRat – Fly Away (feat. Anjulie) 2,007,200 09/06/2017 [EOY #09, 2017 / EOY #56, 2018] 3-1-2-2-3-4-4-7-7-6-12-14-13-15-13-15-15-22-22-20-20-6-8-14-15-11-11-15-41-x-33-36-36-40-46-x What I said: We see TheFatRat once again and 2017 was a brilliant year for him. In 2016 'The Calling' was the #4 single of the year and he gets another year-end top 10 hit in 2017 with 'Fly Away' which became his first #1 single, managing to sneak a week in-between 'Rollin' and 'Instruction'. The song has been described as trap but it's so different that I wouldn't class it as such, TheFatRat is a master of his own genre to be honest. If all you've heard of him are his BJSC entries then this is a different side to him and I would strongly recommend if you're into non mainstream dance. The airy vocals and unique production give this an otherworldly feel which I love. I've also been loving the JJD remix of this which propelled it back into the top 10. Further comment: By itself it's only TheFatRat's 2nd biggest song but combined with the JJD remix it ends up in the top 40 as his top entry. It's really great in either form anyhow so it's deserved. Worth a listen if you liked the ones of his that were in BJSC. 25 Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know (feat. Kimbra) 2,033,100 02/01/2012 [EOY #12, 2012] 31-8-8-8-5-3-1-1-1-5-3-3-4-12-12-13-19-18-18-17-28-33-33-34-39-26-27-29-37-41-33-29-29-38-36-50-40-46-50-x What I said: With the longest chart run of the year, Gotye finishes at #12. The song really is a grower. I thought it was boring at first but soon I started to chart it and before long it wouldn't escape from my head and it spent a quarter of the year in the UK Top 10. For a while this was my YTD #1 but the final quarter likes to bring up lots of competition. Anyways this is still an amazing song and it is the highest ~ indie ~ song in my charts. Further comment: It does come out as my fave indie-pop track of the decade too, hard for anyone to top this really. Especially him seeing as he vanished off the face of the Earth afterwards. 24 PSY – Gangnam Style 2,055,800 03/09/2012 [EOY #01, 2012] 5-2-2-1-1-1-2-3-2-8-10-9-6-3-2-2-6-5-7-15-11-9-13-20-31-40-31-29-17-22-34-31-49-40-x-48-x What I said: Following Yolanda Be Cool & D Cup "We No Speak Americano" and LMFAO feat. Lauren Bennet & GoonRock "Party Rock Anthem", PSY gets the honor of being my favourite song of the year 2012, spending record time in my top 10. It is very similar in sound to "Party Rock Anthem" which may be why it was such a big hit for me. Korean language music was never big in my chart, but this worldwide crossover hit was massive and deservedly so. Psy seems like a nice guy from what I've heard of his interviews on Radio 1. The amazing video which has now passed 1 billion views is worth checking out if you haven't done so already. The song itself, this novelty song is better than all the rest thanks to the dance that everyone now knows, and the hooks "OPPAN GANGNAM STYLE" and "HEEEEEEYYY SEXY LADY" along with the fact that we can't understand what he's saying. The song is just a bit of fun and it's amazing that a non-English song can be this good! Fun fact; this is the 2nd non-English song to top my EOY chart after "We No Speak Americano" - so if you're reading this and you want a smash hit in my chart - you know the formula - score a massive worldwide hit with a fun song that you can dance to, no matter what language you're speaking! I thought Party Rock Anthem would be the dance craze of the decade but Gangnam Style has clearly taken over that, hopefully Psy can be more than a one-hit wonder but it's looking very unlikely that he - or any other Korean artist - will score another hit in the near future. Further comment: Psy didn't have a long lasting chart career officially or for me unsurprisingly and I'm not fond of most K-pop these days. This was such a great track that we'll probably never get another like it anyhow. 23 Martin Solveig – Do It Right (feat. Tkay Maidza) 2,074,600 27/05/2016 [EOY #06, 2016 / EOY #81, 2017] 21-5-5-5-7-14-12-9-8-10-3-6-5-5-4-4-6-7-9-15-20-24-25-25-21-25-26-24-14-16-x-47-x What I said: I didn't think Martin Solveig would ever top 'Hello', though he came close with 'Intoxicated', then 'Do It Right' was released and that's now by far my favourite of his releases. It's got the right amount of fun in it and great punching synths in the drop, and such a good bassline throughout. I'm not excited about Tkay Maidza as a solo artist but she is great in this also, with memorable and catchy lyrics. It became one of those tunes for me that didn't get boring for ages and eventually spent 16 weeks in the top 10, a record for a #3 hit. Further comment: My absolute fave Martin Solveig track and one of the most undeserved official chart flops of the entire decade. 22 Rihanna – S&M 2,084,500 03/01/2011 [EOY #02, 2011] 8-8-11-14-2-1-1-2-1-1-1-1-1-3-4-4-6-9-10-9-13-19-14-12-18-18-19-23-34-30-30-33-36-45-46-42-45-49-x What I said: This was Rihanna's peak for me. She just can't get any better than this A sexy song with a great controversial campaign to go along with it - it became a HUGE UK #3, sadly being behind Jessie J and Adele for a few weeks. This is an amazing pop song sung by an amazing pop singer with a sexy dance beat and sexy lyrics. What more could I want from Rihanna? I like it like it come on!!! This song has 140 plays on my iTunes to date and took the year end number one spot for a few months, before my real year end number one took over. Further comment: Rihanna actually does have one more track left to come, this is still one of the best she ever did though. 21 Sonny Fodera – Always Gonna Be (feat. Alex Mills) 2,097,300 26/05/2017 [EOY #13, 2017 / EOY #35, 2018] 50-44-43-28-30-27-34-30-22-11-10-9-15-12-12-14-8-8-9-10-10-7-7-10-6-5-5-5-9-11-30-x-17-23-22-15-30-38-x What I said: THAT'S RIGHT! I never expected this song to be quite this big on my chart when I entered it, and it did indeed break the record for longest climb to its peak, taking 26 whole weeks to reach #5. There is something about this just keeps me coming back though, the production is outstanding and that drop is insane. You might not think so but after 20 or so listens it is a proper moment. Alex Mills also does a good job of the vocal and the lyrics are somewhat interesting for a genre that doesn't rely on great lyricism. Truly is deep house at its finest and I'm so glad to have discovered this. Definitely recommend to anyone remotely interested in this sort of music, though I suppose you've already heard it if you have. Further comment: Sonny Fodera may now have a UK top 75 hit (thanks to working with MK) but it was this track that got him his breakthrough for me and is... always gonna be his greatest by some distance. Zara Larsson) 2,109,200 24/03/2017 [EOY #03, 2017] 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-2-3-5-9-15-16-17-17-17-17-21-21-25-24-27-31-37-39-34-32-33-48-x-50-x-45-41-46-x What I said: Clean Bandit really impressed me with 'Rockabye' so naturally I was excited for the follow-up, and they only went and delivered a true 13/10 life anthem in 'Symphony'. Instantly debuting at #1 and spending eleven weeks there, it is easily this year's biggest #1 single on the chart, but that is not enough to make this year's EOY #1, and it's not even close. With lush vocals from Zara and beautiful lyrics, alongside amazing production which includes Clean Bandit strings at their best, it truly lives up to its name. I was so pleased to see this get a week at #1 in the UK, but it really deserved the chart run that 'Shape Of You' got. Further comment: It really is Clean Bandit's absolute best, I couldn't believe they'd out-done 'Rather Be' but it happened. 19 MK – 17 2,124,600 08/09/2017 [EOY #79, 2017 / EOY #05, 2018] 43-16-9-6-4-4-4-3-4-3-3-3-3-3-7-11-33-5-5-7-9-14-15-20-18-21-25-23-21-26-26-32-38-x-46-49-x What I said: Following last year's #2 single of the year 'Piece Of Me' expectations were high for what MK was going to bring next... which were quashed when it turned out to be 'My Love 4 U' which could only reach #44 oops, but later on in the year he returned with '17' which instantly out-peaked that and has since gone on to be a lengthy top 10 runner. It's exactly the song I want from him with the big house production and piano riffs that I love MK for, alongside a great vocal line. Just a proper banger. Amazingly this became a top 10 for him in the UK which makes up for POM criminally just scraping the top 40 (though with good longevity). I now consider it to be his best song to date, it's such a banging and uplifting tune that never rests which I love. It spent more time in the chart during the tracking year than any other song, and with 58 total weeks [top 100] it is the second-longest running hit ever behind Jax Jones' 'You Don't Know Me' (70 weeks). Needless to say, this is a proper tune of life. Further comment: Yes this is easily better than both of his Becky Hill collabs, as great as she is. Another well deserved spot in this top 20 18 Rihanna – We Found Love (feat. Calvin Harris) 2,136,100 26/09/2011 [EOY #14, 2011] 5-5-4-8-4-2-2-2-3-4-11-29-30-28-38-41-28-39-34-46-x-48-41-50-x What I said: Rihanna could not have had a better comeback than this. Teaming up with the amazing production skills of Calvin Harris. The instrumental parts of the song make the song better - but I can't dislike the Rihanna's vocals, her voice is perfect for pop-dance music as well as urban. The lyrics do get repetitive but that is sometimes what makes a pop song - this will go down as a Rihanna classic for me. Further comment: This was below What's My Name and S&M that year but has since overtook as it held up better in the years to come and is now firmly the top track from both Rihanna and Calvin and I can't see that ever changing (especially with Ri quietly retiring from music). 17 Sak Noel – Loca People 2,162,200 18/07/2011 [EOY #03, 2011] 1-5-5-7-10-32-7-3-3-1-1-1-1-2-6-6-9-17-13-17-16-25-27-34-36-36-46-48-42-x What I said: Not many people on Buzzjack like this song, but I am one of the few who love it (all day, all night). And I really LOVE it! It's so easy to dance to and try and sound like the woman talking (Johnny, la gente esta muy loca...). She has a strong Spanish accent and that is one of the many reasons this song is so amazing. The lyrics are so quotable. 2011 has really been the best year for Eurodance, mainly thanks to this song and a few other amazing ones. It was quite instant with me, debuting at #1 only to return 8 weeks later for 4 more weeks there. I was so excited that this landed at #1 in the UK, but was not happy at all with its chart run afterwards. WTF? Further comment: It'd be another big 1HW here... except his follow-up did actually make it as high as #5 for me but not much longevity. It hasn't aged quite as well as the rest of this section but is a fun listen every now and then. Absolutely loved this at the time so deserves its spot for that really. 16 Avicii – Heaven (feat. Chris Martin or Simon Aldred) 2,200,500 22/06/2015 [EOY #59, 2015 / EOY #01, 2019] 17-13-x-3-3-6-13-18-7-30-45-x-37-x-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-4-4-4-6-8-17-21-15-5-4-4-6-7-23-2-5-6-6-9-10-11-15-11-13-16-... What I said: For the second consecutive year, following 'Lonely Together' topping the 2018 EOY, it is Avicii who leads the 2019 EOY with 'Heaven'. It is also his 4th EOY chart topper overall, following also 'Wake Me Up' (2013) and 'Waiting For Love' (2015). It was the 3rd single from 'Tim' which instantly entered at #1 upon the album's release and stayed there for 15 weeks, breaking his own record for the most weeks spent at #1 ('Lonely Together' held #1 for 13 weeks). This for me is certainly the song that defined 2019, and its lead is only so small due to its release date. It still sits in the top 10 now (having one of the longest chart runs ever) so it is very much an early contender for being the first song to reach two EOY top 10s. It has just about everything I want from an Avicii song, with its outstanding melody and production. I also think it very much benefits from being slightly longer than the typical Avicii track, giving it the time it needs to build (and the second verse that wasn't there in the 2015 version is a lovely addition) and ultimately paying off in one of the most anthemic drops of Avicii's discography at the 3 minute mark. The story for this song began many years ago however, having been originally recorded in 2014 with Chris Martin. It was soon re-recorded with Simon Aldred and his version was premiered during one of Avicii's sets. A version ripped from the set was subsequently put online, and despite getting no official release it made it to #3 in my chart and #59 in my EOY in that version (which was relatively HQ by standards of live rips). My commentary from that year was: QUOTE(2015) Seriously. What was Avicii thinking not putting this on 'Stories'?? The album is already a 10/10 but this would have made it even better. At least we've got a decent quality version of it out there though, it really is brilliant. Aldred proves himself again to be a great vocalist for Avicii tracks and Avicii works his magic as always. I always knew however it would easily be a #1 if we ever did end up getting a proper version of it coming out. It seemed like the moment had passed when it missed the cut for the 2017 release 'Avīci', but it was supposedly still going to get a future release, and Avicii would decide to go back to the Chris Martin vocal. 2018 soon came and, you know what happened then. So it ended up being this project where 'Heaven' finally got its home, and sadly it proved more fitting for 'Tim' than it would have been for 'Stories', with the main lyric having got a new meaning. My excitement to finally listen to this version was like no other for the whole of the year however, and maybe even the whole of the decade - and for good reason too. It is truly excellent and up there with my absolute favourite songs. Further comment: Seriously what a song! It would be firmly in the top 10 with a complete chart run, and indeed it is still in my weekly top 20. Could be a contender for my top 10 of the 2020 EOY too, maybe it'll even be high in my 2020s EOD. 15 Avicii – Waiting For Love (feat. Simon Aldred) 2,244,600 25/05/2015 [EOY #01, 2015] 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-2-2-2-4-5-8-14-9-5-11-32-28-33-36-42-x-23-x-8-32-45-x What I said: Well this is basically perfection in song form, yet it's still only my 3rd favourite Avicii song of all time, which says a lot about him. My mind's blank on commentary for this right now because I've already said so much about Avicii throughout the course of this thread, but wow this was properly amazing. When I heard the leaked demo I knew this had the potential to be seriously good, and I was proven right by the time it came out in studio quality, and broke chart records for spending 12 consecutive weeks at #1, which would have been 15 had KSHMR not released 'JAMMU'. Why do I love it so much? Well it's a ready-made Thermo-chart smash. It's got all the great Avicii sounds, a seriously catchy chorus and banging drops (especially love the 2nd drop when Avicii really increases the energy). It also acted of the song of my summer and I expect it will now always remind me of the great times I had on my holiday. Further comment: What was my 3rd fave Avicii song then is now my 6th by this metric (and really 7th as Heaven has overtook since the cut-off), just goes to show how consistently great Avicii was throughout the decade. 14 Avicii – Without You (feat. Sandro Cavazza) 2,248,400 18/08/2017 [EOY #37, 2017 / EOY #14, 2018] 1-1-1-1-1-2-2-2-2-2-2-3-7-6-10-9-12-20-32-x-19-17-14-13-25-32-42-36-43-x-49-33-33-45-x-5-18-24-31-39-46-x What I said: 'Without You' was the instant stand out of the EP, entering straight at #1 despite strong competition from himself and also himself, and holding the position for five weeks. It's a song we got a big teaser of as he'd played the demo version in a live show before his retirement, which got uploaded to YouTube in low quality, so the anticipation was high and of course he delivered. It sounded just like a classic Avicii song which I was so pleased to hear, the chorus is huge and the drop is explosive. Deserved to be huge, and it was across Europe but the UK decided it could only let one of his get big. It's a track that's tinged with sadness now, as it was used for many of the tributes that followed his untimely death, though it's still a great song and it is pleasing that this has a great Spotify total as it is an excellent song that deserves the recognition. Further comment: A third Avicii track in a row, that's what you all came here for right? Another perfect song of his though what more can I say. 13 Oliver Moldan – High & Low (feat. Jasmine Ash) 2,264,100 03/02/2017 [EOY #02, 2017] 15-5-6-5-5-5-4-6-6-3-2-2-2-3-3-4-3-3-4-4-11-16-22-22-21-21-19-18-25-32-35-41-49-50-x What I said: And so this year's second-biggest song goes to Oliver Moldan and Jasmine Ash, with a song you're unlikely to have heard of unless you closely follow my charts or BJSC as it unfortunately did not manage to become a chart hit, other than being a minor Spotify hit in Moldan's home country of Germany. Released late in 2016 it only appeared on my radar a few months later but quickly rose into the top ten to spend 19 consecutive weeks there. It was going to be my BJSC entry for the 92nd contest, before finding 'Saving Light' last minute and sending that, but this eventually got send in '94 and got us another top 20 finish. The song has all the right ingredients of a fab dance song, with hooks all around, I especially love the saxophone bits and personally I'd love to see sax solos make another comeback in dance music. It's proper upbeat and energetic all throughout, and if it passed you by I strongly recommend it (of course, it's my 2nd fave song of 2017). Moldan sadly has yet to follow-up the song and so far looks likely to become not just a one hit wonder but the biggest one this chart has ever had. Further comment: He remains a complete one hit wonder as he never reached my Top 50 ever again! But what a great track though, shame he only had one in him (and I haven't heard from the vocalist since either). if you don't remember/haven't heard it. Feels a bit off that it's ahead of three Avicii classics though but that's how this chart works I guess. 12 Jennifer Lopez – On the Floor (feat. Pitbull) 2,330,900 31/01/2011 [EOY #04, 2011] 43-x-41-22-15-5-2-5-5-3-3-4-2-3-6-11-13-19-24-24-24-26-26-28-25-25-27-17-15-14-15-23-21-28-34-38-44-37-37-49-x-43-x What I said: When Jenny Lo leaked this on the internet I was NOT interested at all, as she had a big flop status. I then heard it on Scott Mills' show and it started to grow on me, before it blew up all over the entire world as well as hitting #1 in the UK. It's a great party tune that inspired many rip-offs, but the original is always the best. Pitbull's raps are both excellent and add to the song but it wouldn't be what it is without Jennifer's sexy vocals. Further comment: You may have forgot or not realised just how much I loved this at the time, but yes it is this high, numbers don't lie (although it'd be a bit lower based on current personal opinion in favour of some of the more recent tracks). It is one of the absolute best of the club banger trend of the early 2010s and I'm still amazed J.Lo of all people had this in her so far into her career. Although very much helped by Pitbull and RedOne of course. 11 Oliver Heldens – Gecko (Overdrive) (feat. Becky Hill) 2,381,000 09/12/2013 [EOY #02, 2014] 6-13-25-47-40-x-22-16-20-14-6-7-18-7-5-11-11-8-7-16-28-32-29-34-24-42-37-18-3-8-16-30-39-44-35-19-23-47-x What I said: It's been a whole year since this song originally came out now, and I remember being very impressed with it. Of course I would be, I hadn't heard anything like it before, and it proved itself to be one of the defining songs of the year. Oliver Heldens himself is one of the best producers in the world right now, but I doubt he'll ever make anything like this again. Also helped by the amazing Becky Hill vocal version, she's such a good vocalist, but the instrumental mix is amazing too. The drop defines banging and it's ridiculously catchy, will go down as a Thermo club classic at least if not a real one. Unfortunately it couldn't ever make the top 2 in my weekly chart, but it definitely makes up for it by being the 2nd best song of 2014. Further comment: Missing out on the top 10 by less than 10k chart sales! I was right about him never coming close to topping this but he's been great ever since nonetheless.
