Just before the top 10, we lose the opening single from their fourth album, Viva la Vida long name, etc. and while it was certainly eclipsed by the single that's followed it ultimately, it's difficult to forget that this was still quite an eyebrow-raiser at the time. It was a song that the band had penned way prior to its release and its lyrics reflect an anti-war message and a far darker attitude than their previously released with such soundbites 'carnival of idiots on show' and 'the fox became God' (both inspired by when Martin was watching Bill O'Reilly on Fox News). It is very diverse musically as well, featuring crashing guitars that build in intensity, screeching falsetto and ending on a quiet piano. It was released initially as a free download where it was downloaded over two million times but was eventually officially released and charted at number 8 here, but more chart success would await them. I confess I mainly go to the excellent Pendulum version of this more so than the original, but I do appreciate this a lot for being their first real experiment in sound and it's held up rather well over the years, I'd say this is about the right position for this.

Violet Hill is one of their best, top 5 for sure. Very standout in their discography & leagues ahead of VLV the single.

Paradise to go...

This top ten is almost perfect! Voting for Trouble now.

Paradise was always a lot better than Violet Hill for me.

Voted for In My Place this time. Damn all those people who have voted Paradise already 🙁

'Violet Hill' is probably the next song I'd have voted for after 'Trouble', but it's still a fantastic song that didn't deserve to be overshadowed so heavily by VLV.

what has Trouble done to you all? it's a fantastic song

the 3 singles from X&Y are the worst 3 songs left by far, especially the U2-copycat-song Speed of Sound
