05. Ticket To Ride (1965) / Help!

7/20 votes

The first song to drop out of the top 5 is 'Ticket To Ride'! This was The Beatles' first release of 1965 following a busy period of touring. A chart winner was in their grasp yet again, as 'Ticket To Ride' became the group's latest consecutive #1 in the both the UK and US. They make it look so easy! This single marked progression for them. For starters, it was their first release to exceed 3 minutes. It also incorporated drone and heavier sounding instrumentation than ever before. The depth of sound was certainly impressive. Music critic Ian MacDonald branded 'Ticket To Ride' as "extraordinary for its time" and "psychologically deeper than anything the Beatles had recorded before". An interesting switch-up for the group was how they presented the coda of the song. This is the "my baby don't care..." part, which features a completely different tempo and lyrics to the rest of the song. The experimentation that we'd know and love them for was slowly coming in. The inspiration of the title 'Ticket To Ride' and the song meaning has remained unclear. Suggestions range from "a British Railways ticket to the town of Ryde on the Isle of Wight" to prostitution. Who knows! Lennon was largely the mind behind the song's composition anyway. 'Ticket To Ride' appears on the album 'Help!' and also makes an appearance in the movie of the same name, while the group are skiing. The song had some pretty high profile live performances too - from their famous Shea Stadium gig to Top of the Pops. The latter performance would later feature in an episode of Doctor Who called 'The Executioners'! 'Ticket To Ride' did very well to make it this far, but now its time has come. It's just 'Yesterday' left now to represent the 'Help!' album.

I would have liked a top 3 finish for 'Ticket To Ride' based on personal preference, but it still did very well to make it to the top 5. Brilliant song

Voting for 'Let It Be' again!

Gone for 'Let It Be' now, hoping it'll be 'Eleanor Rigby' and 'Hey Jude' in the final 2.
Four of the best songs ever written for sure, but Hey Jude is the clear weak point here. It's great, though it's not held up quite as well from overplay/many drunken crowd singalongs.
It has to be Eleanor Rigby for this round, we’d have a near perfect top three after that!
