I reaaally wanted to like her as the doctor, but she has very little charisma, and the worst doctor in years is made worse by the worst companions in decades.
The premise of this episode screams filler in the same vein as the likes of Smile, Midnight, etc - but I'm hoping it isn't because all of the cast seem to be raving about the monster being one of the scariest ever.
Midnight was filler done absolutely spot on tho, it’s the weakest episode of that season for sure but is still a solid 8/10.
Midnight is one of the absolute BEST Who episodes for me, absolutely not the worst of series 4!! :o If this is even close to Midnight's quality it'll be incredible, I'm not expecting that but "filler" can definitely be done really well.

Midnight being called filler? What the? Its one of the best pieces of Doctor Who; both Classic and New.

And weakest of that season... not when turds like The Doctor's Daughter and The Sontaran Stratagem/ Poison Sky are there

I mean, Midnight definitely was filler in the literal sense but it FAR exceeds the quality of just about every other filler episode for me!

I mean any who episode that isn't an 'event' or linked to a story arc could be described as filler. Does that make all of Classic Who filler that didn't contain either the Daleks, Cybermen, Master etc. Because that's just mad if so.

Also if we go by that definition Robots of Death and Talons of Weng-Chiang would probably be top of most people's filler lists

I'm not hearing all this, Midnight might be 'filler' in the sense that it didn't add a lot to the overall season arc, but it's one of the best episodes they've ever done, the atmosphere and tension generated is second to none.
I definitely didn’t mean to sound as if Midnight’s not good because it’s far better than the likes of Love and Monsters, Fear Her, etc which are not great filler at all. Only that it was literally a filler episode because it replaced something else at the last minute.

Midnight was intended to be a stop-gap episode on a low budget to fill in for a concept that fell through, I'm quite sure? If that doesn't make it filler, I don't know what does! It's in a category with stuff like Boom Town, etc.

Yup I do know this however I think calling it filler is just silly. Yes it filled a gap in the schedule. However the implication of calling something filler makes it feel redundant and unnecessary

Going back to classic who many stories were brought in last minute when others fell through. If a story is good, it’s good regardless of its history and how/ why it got made

You're misunderstanding the use of "filler" in this context then, nobody is calling it a bad story, it's actually in my top 5 New Who episodes, I love it! It's being called filler in a literal sense, because as you said yourself, it filled a gap. I'm aware of the connotations but I think it was made quite clear upthread that this wasn't the consensus.

i'm hesitant about the comments that this is the most scariest episode of the series because it shares the same writer as It Takes You Away which was also going to be scary and we ended up with a frog on a chair :)

nice to see a monster tho!

(also Midnight is incredible)

When the show hypes things up as 'omg scariest thing ever!!1!!' it ends up disappointing so I'll keep my expectations low for this one

Midnight was awful. Why was it so obviously a British coach trip in Spain in space?!

Also why did they not axe frog man? I might just skip this episode if frog man is behind it.

I actually forgot about The Doctors Daughter tbh, THAT is the worst of that season for me. TSS/TPS dragged on a bit and probably could’ve been one episode if it was more condensed but I still enjoy it
This series has gone from 0-100 when compared to the last one. There was a LOT going on, too much probably imo. A fantastic story at its heart though if you stripped away some elements, even if it is a typical sc-fi trope. Just nice to get some ‘evil’ monsters and high stakes!

Series 12 is off to suuuuch a good start, I really enjoyed that! An engaging, thrilling base-under-siege story with a real sense of threat. The speech at the end was a tad on the nose, but it's still such an important message to deliver and of course VERY topical.

Getting maaaajorly slated by Doctor Who stans which has really surprised me oops. It won't go down as a massive classic but I've already seen a Tsuranga Conundrum comparison
