The 2000s saw another iconic book franchise published, A Series of Unfortunate Events. The series saw the author take a particularly lead role despite never appearing in the actual action. It help to create this mystique around the world that he was building and drew in the reader with it! The series followed three orphans (Violet, Klaus and Sunny) in a story you really don't want to read. They are passed from carer to carer, starting with the evil Count Olaf who then always turns up in some form of disguise alongside his villainous troupe, before the orphans go on the run! There was so much fun to be had with the novels as the reader wanted to find out more about mysteries such as VFD, the fires, what was in the sugar bowl and the Great Unknown. It was only until the TV series that recently aired on Netflix that we actually got the remaining answers we needed!

I've read the books so many times and I love them so much! There's nothing else like it out there and I just love the tone of the books and actually how dark it could get! I just loved being involved in the mystery and finding all the hidden clues in the text, the covers and the pictures as well as the dedications to Beatrice! There's so many incredible characters within it as well such as Carmelita and Esme!

What are your memories and which is your favourite book?

A series of unfortunate events is what got me into books really, I remember purchasing them one by one and I was hooked instantly. I remember when “The End” came out I got up so early so I can go into town to purchase it. I still feel like we had a lot of unanswered questions which is frustrating but the Netflix series did the books great justice.

Whilst they're all banging as a series, I'd say they only really become truly incredible around book 5/6 and the storyline that runs all the way through to the end gets going. And must give a shout out to the audiobooks narrated by Tim Curry if you can acquire them!

Dipping back into them as an adult I did find this list of fan theories about the series which makes interesting reading in the wake of the Netflix series.

I adored these, I read them all after I had a hernia removed in 2006 when I was off school. The Slippery Slope is my fav - filled by the Austere Academy.
