Do you keep records of your music collection, this will be a fun thing to do, I always keep a record of my music collection to see what I got, and on what format they are on: a CD, cassette, LPs, 7 inch, 12 inch etc, etc, and make notes if they are Limited Editions, or come as a Picture Disc, Coloured Vinyls.

 

My music collection goes back to 1978 :drama: :o I have amassed a lot of music over the years, I've lost count as I have lots of music in the attic, which most of them are on Vinyl as I don't own a record deck no more, and lots of rare items, such as coloured vinyls, picture discs.

Does anyone have a rough estimate of how much actual money they have spent on their record collection, sometimes i dread to think how much i have spent on music since i first started buying music back in about 1988.

I started out buying CDs and currently have about 500 albums on CD. I also have about 1000 CD singles (dating back to around 1990) but they're all up in the attic. A few years ago I ripped my entire CD collection to MP3 and along with digital music that I've either bought or otherwise, ahem, obtained I've got about 28,000 songs in my digital music library. Last week I bought Dua Lipa's new album on CD and this is the first CD I've bought since Kylie's 'Golden' which was back in 2018. Before that I think it was Sia's 'Everyday is Christmas' in 2017. The last vinyl album I bought was either Declan McKenna's debut album or Oasis' '(What's The Story) Morning Glory' which is my all time favourite album. I've got a list on a spreadsheet of all the albums I have on CD but not of CD singles.

 

A couple of years ago I realised I hardly ever play my CDs so I started the process of going through all of them alphabetically, playing each one in the car on my way to work and back, which I completed just before Christmas last year. It was quite a nostalgic musical journey, with some albums aging better than others!

 

I also have a few albums on vinyl and some 7" singles too and I occasionally play these as I still have the record player I bought years ago.

 

I listen to music most of the day while I'm working, and this is split between my digital music library and Spotify.

 

Couldn't live without music!

best wayto find out is to make an account on discogs.com and put your collection there - they calculate the value of your collection by the price of items that are sold there (there's a marketplace to buy music as well)

I started collecting CDs in 2008 (with NOW 70 being my first memory). I then started collecting vinyl from 2015 onwards, as well as occasionally collecting cassettes from charity shops.

I think I have built an impressive collection so far

Yeah I'm about a third of the way through cataloging my collection on Discogs. It's quite useful when I go charity shopping because sometimes I can't remember whether I've got something already, or if I got rid of it years ago, or if I thought about buying it recently but didn't actually buy it etc. Also fun to create a Wishlist on there. I've got about 3000 on there now. I probably won't ever buy them all but it's useful to know what's out there that I don't have.. and every now and again I'll treat myself on a Discogs spending spree LD

Best way to do it by the way is download the app - then you can scan the barcodes to add them to your collection

What's the point of it just to show you what your collections?
