Maybe, they're hoping/expecting people to download it onto their ipods the Xmas. If it had a physical release, I'd expect most sales would be downloads, but with a physical re-release (I'm assuming there's one) this could allow it into the combined chart.

True, but people could easily rip the song from a christmas compilation cd onto their ipod.

Why would people spend money on something they already have?
