:( "Chains on You" really grew on me after initially hating it so I think Athena could've delivered something good, but understandable given the circumstances.

A shame but understandable and I'm sure they'll be back next year, hopefully with Athena and a total banger.
I've booked my hotel! (with free cancellation, obv.) I have been desperate to go back to Eurovision since Copenhagen in 2014; I thought 2020 was the year - perhaps 2021 will be instead.

Hmm nope, I don't think it will be!

So fully half of what's left to drop could appear at any moment!

In terms of what could still shake up the mix I'd say to keep your eyes and ears peeled for

- Russia (Little Big's "will they won't they")

- Greece (allegedly a strong Dua Lipa style uptempo)

- Switzerland (could be a dark horse if it's as strong as Repondez-Moi)

- Latvia (Miss Tina's ARTPOP could mean anything!)

- Azerbaijan (Cleopatra's revenge!)

- UK (maybe it won't be garbage?)

- Malta (they've allegedly shot and recorded two different songs and are waiting to see what will stand out more)

Belarus have been very quiet, haven't they? Do you think they might be doing an Armenia?

Kazna has now been present at both Moldova's song reveal and the Russian NF..so I think they're probably going with "Braids" :drama:

Not that I was expecting to go anyway, but Easyjet cancelled the flight to Amsterdam that I'd booked in May last year using the credit from the equivalent 2020 flight - along with almost every other flight to and from Amsterdam that weekend, save for one on the Friday night and one on the Sunday (which are now several hundred pounds each for anyone genuinely still hoping to be there).

It would have been a bit of a mess anyway, as mentioned in a previous post I was annoyed how crazily expensive Rotterdam accommodation was for both 2020 and 2021 weekends, even pre-Covid - no other country in recent years had done this and kept their hotel prices pretty standard. Rotterdam hostels shot up to three figure sums a night for that weekend and hotels were basically the price of a round the world trip.

Can't really book for May next year yet until I know where it'll be and what weekend!

Very good piece from ESCXtra that I think is important to share over here:

https://escxtra.com/2021/03/09/the-eurovisi...ession-contest/

Talks about the ongoing struggle for diversity and respect in a contest that should emulate it, particularly with reference to the entries this year from The Netherlands and Cyprus, and some of the contest's history, well worth reading all the way through.

Really makes you think that Eurovision is not exactly a distraction from the every day problems that I personally thought it to be for years.

Thank you for this, Iz.

It seems there are at least 2 strands of racism ongoing. One is the active type - remarks about Jeangu's lyrics for example.

The other is the white privilege type where white creators and artists - those who are songwriters, video directors, choreographers, etc. - are unaware of, or perhaps momentarily absentminded about aspects of their work that re-enforce ideas about BIPOC that have rightly been acknowledged as prejudicial, or trivialise issues that those communities experience or have experienced.

In an institution as overwhelmingly white as Eurovision, we have much work to be done.

Azerbaijan and Malta will drop on Monday. Georgia will be coming soon and Belarus seem to be suggesting they'll send a different song rather than pull out in a hissy fit so we're on the home straight now!

All the live on tape performances will be shown in the Eurovision Song Celebration on the 29th May AND Krista Siegfrids is hosting a behind the scenes show on YouTube!

I didn't know where to put this but I love it. Not a fan of Poland.

Australia are confirmed to not be sending a delegation to Rotterdam and will use the live-on-tape performance. So far the main event on the Saturday night remains unaffected.
