It's a little unfair to ask someone to wear a mask/covering who isn't used to it for their entire shift, NHS workers have experience wearing these anyway and the nature of the job obviously puts them at a higher risk so that is not an argument. If the public complies, there won't be much spread as they are there all day and it'll loosen contact with those only there for a few minutes.

The arguments and tantrums against masks are pathetic for the most part and classic English selfishness and unwillingness to change. We are not anywhere near out of this pandemic yet and the evidence is that Autumn/Winter will likely bring a spike in cases. We need to be prepared for that so it's better to bring this change out now while cases are gradually on a downward turn.

Yes but what about NHS workers? Same for them. You can't have one rule for them and another for office and shop workers.

NHS workers are more used to it and are have the facility to change their masks several times per day. I can't rule out the possibility that supermarket chains (on the assumption that they might be expected to pay for the masks) have lobbied the government for the exemption.

I am exempt. Have a GP's letter as wearing one gives me added stress. I can still take an interest in the subject though. She says she's done dozens of letters but you've to have long-term mental health problems and not just suddenly magic them up which she says some are now doing, faking stress etc.

There’s taking an interest and then theres criticising people who don’t have to do something you already don’t have to do.

Anyway, if people can’t feel comfortable wearing a mask for a very short time, I truly hope they don’t get COVID. It’s kind of supposed to be worse.

Why would the Leader of the Opposition just blindly support the Government? Especially this Government?

^_^

Mask-gate is already exhausting.

As is this:

How is anyone supposed to support what the government is doing when even the government hasn't got a clue what it is doing? Johnson's line seems to be "I..I...I... have no idea - whiffle, whaffle - what I'm doing, but - biff, boff, paff - I expect the opposition - blah, piffle, paffle, - to support it. Whatever it is."

This might be the biggest load of shite I’ve read on this forum.

Added stress. Give over. It’s a wee mask for f*** sake. Just wear it and stop being a selfish arsehole. If you’re asymptomatic you could pass it on to someone. It’s a deadly viral infection. Just pop it on when you nip into a shop. It’s no gonna kill you

I wore a mask to fly home and that was for about 5 hrs in total. Hanging off one ear to munch on a mid air croissant as is allowed but otherwise wearing the whole time and it was absolutely fine. My sister wore one for a 12hr induction shift at NHS. Literally just a bit of cloth, like wrapping up with a scarf mid winter.

Don’t understand any of these counter arguments against mask with folk claiming stress or panic attacks. It’s an actual joke. You can still breathe perfectly normally. So I don’t see how having a wee bit of cloth in front of your mouth makes a damned bit of difference

It’s just the easiest and simplest thing we can do. Near universal mask coverage when in public spaces can help us suppress the virus and prevent a second wave. It just needs everyone to stop being so selfish and me me me for half an hour and think of the wider picture. We all want this bloody thing gone, wearing masks helps us to do that so therefore let’s all wear masks. Simples.

You should do my job in the council with people claiming Complex needs to fill red boxes to get a free house. It's the same mentality.

Everyone else works hard to follow rules and do the right thing while people like that expect different rules for them.

Let's look at this rationally.

I don't like wearing a mask. I find it uncomfortable. I know that it is unlikely to do much to stop me picking up the virus. I know that I am highly unlikely to be carrying the virus, so wearing a mask probably makes no difference to the chances of me passing it on.

BUT, I also know that I am am highly unlikely to be involved in an accident, let alone a serious one, if I travel in a car. Nevertheless, I have no problem with wearing a seat belt. Indeed, I always wore a seat belt when travelling in the front of a car even before it was made compulsory. The only difference here is that wearing a seat belt protects me while wearing a mask (potentially) protects other people.

That doesn't change the fact that I don't like wearing a mask. However, I'm even less keen on the idea that I might inadvertently pass on a virus that leads to somebody dying. Therefore, I will obey the law.

I'm very surprised they're not requiring shop workers to wear face masks. You'd think the last thing a manager would want is for their staff to inadvertently infect each other. In my state just about every retail and service worker is required to wear one, as are restaurant servers.

Frankly people making noise about wearing one are absolutely pathetic.

Here is an item that will stop you dying. If you don't wear it your chance of your own death and/or causing the deaths of others goes way up. "Wah wah I don't careee I don't WANT TO". I mean ultimately if you'd rather kill yourself and others than be briefly inconvenienced that's on you.

Have to say it is incredibly ironic that the demos most strongly protesting masks are the same ones at greatest risk of death from it if they do get it. I say let nature take its course then. Play stupid games win stupid prizes.

Ignore political though it's an arguement between liberty and collectivism!

I'm saving an absolute fortune not having to pay for Scotrail's ridiculous train fares, plus don't have to make a 90 minute commute each day to do a job I can do from my living room.

Sorry but I'm in no rush to get back to the office just so Tesco can benefit from my £3 meal deals.

It's not just Tesco, it's the coffee shops, convinence stores, traders in train stations/tube stations, petrol stations.. then this has a knock on effect on big suppliers who provide the produce and are losing sales. People save but then they don't spend and this creates a deficit.

People will go back to the office for certain, but I'm struggling to see big employers making it mandatory for everyone to work in the office 5 days a week which is going to have a knock on effect

It’s going to be nearly impossible for my employer to require people to go back into the office for possibly even 2 days a week with current precautions taken. The number of desks for my part has gone down from 9 to 3 and the 9 was already a hot desk arrangement and therefore not catering for 100% capacity.

I do understand that...but I guess it's just a further painful reminder that our individual comfort and happiness has to be sacrificed for the 'greater good' of the economy. I'm sure most people are happier and have more free time/money/sleep working from home and it's pretty irritating that all of that has to be pissed away just because there's as of yet no sustainable way of keeping things going without us spending unnecessarily...

For what it's worth a lot of companies will surely ask their staff to keep working from home. The risk if there is an outbreak is negative PR, libel claims and a sick workforce. I really can't see people going back to work fully until there is a vaccine and even then I think there will be a movement to changing how people work, ie. more companies operating flexible working and more companies working 3 days in the office and 2 from home. Just my two cents, but I also suspect this will greatly increase productivity IN the workplace and also have a direct impact on mental health.

People need to spend money that's just the way world works in capitalism. Personally I would much rather if the Government just encouraged us to go and support businesses like we would if we were commuting.

Well of course it’s been lovely to work from home but this was never gonna last forever. It sounds like you won’t be back in an office for a long while and like Rooney says, the way offices work may change entirely so I’m not sure why your grumbling. NHS and supermarket staff and delivery drivers have had not choice the whole way through this. Schools are back full time in September. If you’re lucky enough to have a job you can do at home be grateful. My job cannot easily be done from home which has created an immense stress for me and those furloughed have been worrying about their job security the whole time. So whilst I’m sure a few people may be happier, it hasn’t been a picnic for everyone.

In actual Coronavirus news two bits that I found interesting today:

Firstly, the vaccine data with Oxford University looks very positive. Obviously lots of challenges along the way, but people who know far more about scientific papers etc. than me have all said the data is really promising and it looks likely to be a winner.

Secondly if the information Vallance said today. It looks like SAGE recommened a total lockdown on the 16th March, but it took until 23rd March for it to be implemented. It will be interesting to see who gets thrown under the bus for this later in the year.
